The Spooky Linings Playlist

The Spooky Linings keep on rolling, and wouldn't you know it: we're back in familiar territory. It just wouldn't be right if we didn't cover another entry in the Halloween franchise this season, so before Halloween Ends arrives this Thursday, let's go back to when The Boogeyman returned to his throne with 1988's Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. We've got plenty to talk about in this one, including Jamie's addiction to Mountain Dew, Priests Lives Matter, a leather clad Michael Myers cruising the streets of Chicago, and even Dr. Loomis...but with a hat! All of that and more with our guest guy-who-might-have-heard-of-Michael-Myers-before JT Kelly.

You can find the legend Bucky the Power Plant Worker on Twitter here.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers stars Donald Pleasence, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris, and Michael Pataki. Directed by Dwight H. Little.

Now that we've gotten the season premiere out of the way, it's time for the best time of the year: the Spooking Linings month! So with the eleventh film (and the first remake) in the franchise on the horizon, let's look back to where it all started with the 1987 original Hellraiser. This movie is a lot, and not in a good way. We're baffled that this franchise has managed to have this much longevity. That being said, we've got plenty to talk about like Julia's incredible sense of fashion, Frank's insatiable appetite for chins, and how the United Kingdom isn't a real place. And of course we play F@#%, Marry, Kill with the Cenobites. All of that and a ton more in our first Spooking Linings episode of 2022 with returning guest JT Kelly.

Hellraiser (1987) stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and Sean Chapman. Directed by Clive Barker.

Season 6 has finally arrived! And while our Aronofsky tradition is starting to come to a close, we've still got (at least) one more to discuss: 2008's The Wrestler. A rough and grimey tale of a past-his-prime wrestler trying to reclaim his former fame is just as a depressing as it sounds, but there's a lot of great topics to discuss, including Colin Duty, bathroom hand soap cologne, New Jersey's inescapability, Mickey Björk, and of course David Arquette: Renaissance Man (this will all make sense once you check out the episode.)

The Wrestler stars Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, and Judah Friedlander. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.

We've hinted at it all season long, but in our Season 5 finale, we're going out strong with a film that is absolutely perfect; it's John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982. A tale of paranoia, toxic masculinity, and great facial hair that just feels timeless. Is it Carpenter's best movie? Was Childs assimilated? What happened to Nauls? How many times can we say the words "the Thing" in one episode? We have answers to all of these questions and more in this jam packed episode. Plus, our pitch for a Saturday morning cartoon based on The Thing, remaking this film with the cast of Mean Girls, the wild life of Wilford Brimley, and more are all points of discussion in our final send off of the year before our long hibernation in the arctic.

Happy holidays! See you in Season 6.

The Thing (1982) stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, David Clennon, and Keith David. Directed by John Carpenter.

If you can believe it, there's a new Matrix movie on the horizon, so we thought we'd take a look back at one of the more maligned entries in the franchise with 2003's The Matrix Reloaded. Is it a worthy follow up to one of the greatest films of all time? Or is it simply too big for its own good? We'll jack in to decide once and for all. Plus, we unveil HBO's newest tagline, discuss what the city of Zion must smell like, read what is quite possibly the most insane IMDb "trivia" we've ever seen, and, of course, we'll talk about Jet Li's The One (a lot) with special guest John "Houzer' Smith!

The Matrix Reloaded stars Keanu Reeves, Harold Perrineau, Carrie-Anne Moss, Nona Gaye, Gloria Foster, Jada Pinkett Smith, Harry Lennix, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Monica Bellucci. Directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

2019’s Vivarium is a simple movie that is anything but. A dazzling array of beautiful imagery with terrifying implications, it’s a thought-provoking new spin on the ever popular “stuck in a loop” trope. But does it work? Come along with us as we lift up the sidewalk to find out. Plus: how Dustin would react if he starred in the film, our unusual Knotfest line-up, the torture of being forced to watch Rob Schneider’s stand-up live, and a lot, lot more. Listen to our episode and be released.

Vivarium stars Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, Eanna Hardwicke, and Jonathan Aris. Directed by Lorcan Finnegan.

It’s one of the greatest movies of all time with one of the greatest cast by one the greatest directors. That’s right, it’s your dad’s favorite movie: The Great Escape from John Sturges. It’s nearly 60 years old, but this adventure comedy is still one hell of a good time with plenty of laughs and a lot of heart. At a nearly 3 hour runtime, not a minute of this movie is wasted or boring - much like our episode (but thankfully our episode isn’t 3 hours long.) Dustin and Nathan sit down to discuss all the highlights of the movie, plus revisiting the great TV shows MXC and Reno 911!, the best method for decapitating an American (if that’s what you’re into), and a retail horror story from Nathan you won’t want to miss.

The Great Escape stars Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. Directed by John Sturges.

It’s Thanksgiving Week, so we have to talk about one of our favorite Thanksgiving movies ever, which of course is none other than 2002’s Spider-Man from director Sam Raimi - don’t worry, we’ll forgive you if you forgot this is a Thanksgiving movie. While the sequel is lauded as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time, the one that started it all should not be forgotten so easily. This fantastic film set the bar so high that it’s the de facto template for the ultimate superhero origin story. Take off your glasses and flex your newly acquired six pack as we discuss the long road to getting the movie made (and all of the less fortunate Spider-Man movies that never were) plus our pitch for a Lonely Island produced Spider-Man flick, Dustin’s insane Dunkin Donuts story, the (totally unfair) acquisition of Holy Propaganda by Nathan and Mallie, and much, much more in this episode that’s so good, you’ll feel “so high” that “you can hear Heaven.”

Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, and Rosemary Harris. Directed by Sam Raimi.

We tried really, really hard to keep this episode under 2 hours but there’s just so much to talk about with this one as it’s one of the most disappointing movies of the year. It’s the next installment in the new Halloween franchise with the really dumb name: Halloween Kills. Saying we were excited for this movie is an understatement, and boy, were we left down. That being said, there’s a lot to discuss - both good and bad - including Michael’s master plan that rivals that of Silva from Skyfall, how much Tommy Doyle must love the Misfits, and our pitch for the Endgame level mashup between all of the past characters from the entire Halloween franchise. All of that and more with returning guest and casual Halloween sort-of fan JT Kelly.

Halloween Kills stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Thomas Mann, Anthony Michael Hall, Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens, Charles Cyphers, Nick Castle, and James Jude Courtney. Directed by David Gordon Green.
