The Spooky Linings Playlist

In Part Two of our last episode before we sign off for the year, Dustin and JT cover all of the other Shining related releases, including Room 237, the Making ‘The Shining’ documentary, the sequel Doctor Sleep, and the 1997 mini-series. We’ll pitch our dream Kubrick movie, reveal which actor in the mini-series once played Osama Bin Laden, tease the off-season bonus episodes to come, and a hell of a lot more.

The Shining stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Come play with us in our Season 04 finale with the enduring, enthralling, and always entertaining The Shining from 1980. While Mallie was unfortunately unable to voice his thoughts on the film for this episode, past guest JT Kelly joins Dustin for a 3-hour love fest of one of the most influential horror films of all time. In Part One of our finale, we’ll cover the movie itself, plus JT’s many, many questions regarding hedge mazes, Dick Hallorann’s impeccable choice of wall decor, naming your daughter Freddy, and so, so much more.

Be on the look out for Part Two dropping later this week where we’ll cover Room 237, the documentary Making 'The Shining', Doctor Sleep, the 1997 mini-series, and of course our silver linings for the film.

And lastly, thank you so, so much for another fantastic season. See you in Season 05 in 2021!

The Shining stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

We’re diverting slightly for this week’s Spooky Linings entry to tackle another film in the Wizarding World Universe. From the sinking of the Titanic to visions of Auschwitz, there’s simultaneously a lot and nothing at all happening in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - a movie that’s 2 hours too long. We’ll try to make sense of the non-sensical timeline this film establishes, plus how to identify evil children early on, the problematic takes that have been spewing from JK Rowling’s mouth recently, the secret dark side of the Niffler, and much more with returning guests Michael Moss and Jennie Lee!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Johnny Depp, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, and Carmen Ejogo. Directed by David Yates.

We’re keeping the spooky train rolling this week with an episode that is THICC: thicc runtime, thicc serial killer, and two thicc guests. It’s 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. And boy, what a shit show this film is. We’ll try to make sense of both versions of this nonsensical mess, plus we ponder what Michael Myers’s fuck style is like, we discover the undeniable and striking similarities this movie has to The Rise of Skywalker, we discuss the insane story regarding Dannielle Harris’s “involvement” with the film, and a ton more with newcomer JT Kelly and returning guest Nathan Simmons in an episode that’s longer than the movie itself.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers stars Donald Pleasence, Paul Rudd, Marianne Hagan, and Mitch Ryan. Directed by Joe Chappelle.

We’re in a new era of the show, having now surpassed the almighty 100th episode. And how do we celebrate? By bringing back something we haven’t done since Season 01: a whole month of horror and horror-adjacent movies! And we’re kicking things off not with a bang but with a fizzle of a movie; it’s 2005’s Hide and Seek. How does a movie starring Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning manage to be so boring? We’ll find out with very special guests Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon. Plus, we take a retrospective look back at the very problematic series Nip/Tuck, we’ll discuss the intricacies of DoesTheDogDie.com, and we freak out over the extremely excessive suicide of Brian Cox in The Ring. All of this and a ton more.

Hide and Seek stars Amber McDonald, Dylan Baker, Dakota Fanning, Robert De Niro, Melissa Leo, Famke Janssen, Amy Irving, Robert John Burke, and Elisabeth Shue. Directed by John Polson.

We did it! 100 episodes! And what better way to cap off such a milestone than with a glorified snuff film. It’s 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, directed by known anti-Semite Mel Gibson. Is it a movie? Only by the strictest definition. We’ll discuss the film in its entirety, plus the invention of chairs, “cursed” movies, the upcoming sequel, and a hell of a lot more with special guest Adam Kanfer! To our Jewish listeners, g’mar chatima tovah, and have an easy fast!

And finally, thank you all for 100 episodes and 4 years of podcasting! It’s been a wild ride, but we’re far from done. Stay tuned for (at least) 100 more!

The Passion of the Christ stars Mattia Sbragia, Maia Morgenstern, Hristo Shopov, James Caviezel, Francesco Cabras, Luca Lionello, Monica Bellucci, Claudia Gerini and Rosalinda Celentano. Directed by Mel Gibson.

This week on the show is a truly great one as we crack open (with a wrench) the 2010 action packed superhero tale Super from director James Gunn. Ten years on, does this hilariously dark, downbeat comedy about an unlikely “hero” hold up? We’ll find out and we’ll also talk about the insane original choice for Kevin Bacon’s character, Ellen Page’s “likeness”, hentai TV channels, and much much more with guest Coby Evans. And remember, if you see crime happening, tell it to shut up!

Super stars Ellen Page, Rainn Wilson, Liv Tyler, Gregg Henry, Rob Zombie, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fillion, William Katt and Michael Rooker. Directed by James Gunn.

Sandler’s back, baby! This week we’re keeping the A24 train rolling as we break open the 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems from the Safdie Brothers. If this movie doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat, you should definitely check your pulse. We’ve got a ton of stuff to talk about in this jam packed episode, including the many talents of Julia Fox, Mallie’s deep love for healthy colons, Dustin’s story about meeting The Weeknd, and a lot, lot more.

Plus, an insanely awesome bonus after the closing music as special guest Gabe Goldstein (editor) joins us to talk about working on both trailers for the film, the secret Howard Ratner Spotify playlist, the HBO drama I Know This Much is True, and a ton of other stuff.

Uncut Gems stars Adam Sandler, Julia Fox, LaKeith Stanfield, Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, Mike Francesa, and Judd Hirsch. Directed by Benny & Josh Safdie.

What can be said about 2013’s Under the Skin that hasn’t already been said? Well, we may have found a few things. This truly cerebral indie film isn’t for everyone but may offer a lot to those brave enough to venture into its strange foray of science fiction. We’ll try to decipher what exactly the movie is about, plus we’ll breakdown people that tattoo their own names on their skin, the audacity of chewing gum during a sexual assault, how terrible Scottish television looks, and plenty more.

Under the Skin stars Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan, Robert J. Goodwin, Kryštof Hádek, Michael Moreland, Scott Dymond, and Jeremy McWilliams. Directed by Jonathan Glazer.

“Insane” doesn’t even begin to describe the 1998 black-comedy Very Bad Things. Violent deaths, unlikable characters, and bizarre music choices are just some of the factors that make this film a truly “seeing is believing” situation - and not in a good way. Guest Sam Weisberg joins us to try to understand just what happened, as well as why wedding rehearsal dinners are a scam, the timeline of Jeremy Piven’s hairline, forced adoptions, and a ton more.

You should also check out Sam’s website Hidden Films.

Very Bad Things stars Jeremy Piven, Daniel Stern, Cameron Diaz, Jon Favreau, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Christian Slater. Directed by Peter Berg.
