The Spooky Linings Playlist

1989’s The War of the Roses is undeniably a classic. The 2025 remake The Roses, however, is probably not destined for the same fate. Even though the cast shines, the story is lacking a lot of the…well, war of the Roses. It’s worth exactly one watch (preferably on a plane) and not much more. That being said, our episode certainly isn’t a drag, so sign a commitment (not a contract) to listen along as we discuss the film. Topics of discussion also include Mallie’s new fashion accessory, great bleed out spots, celebrity cookbooks, and cucking lemons. All of that and more with special guest David Arnold of the queer horror podcast Fear Coded.

You can check out Fear Coded here. You can also check out the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective here.

The Roses stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney. Directed by Jay Roach.

It was a franchise that critics turned their noses up at and movie snobs roll their eyes at, but Twilight proved all of them wrong at the box office. When it comes to the movie itself, however, they may have been proven right. A Mormon’s tale of yearning and romance is actually a cautionary tale of gaslighting and abusive behavior. If you loved this one as a teen, you may be surprised at how it plays nearly twenty years later. So grab a beer (regardless of the time of day) and hold on tight, spider monkeys, cause we’re breaking (dawn) this one open as we discuss the film, plus the ghost truck of Forks, Taylor Lautner’s best bit, and Mallie’s live reaction to watching the final fight scene in Breaking Dawn - Part 2 for the first time. All of that and so much more with returning betrothed guests Priscilla Hendry and Ashley Simmons.

Twilight stars Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Robert Pattinson, Jackson Rathbone, and Kristen Stewart. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke.

While prom season may be in the rearview, we’re not done celebrating because this week on the show we’re talking none other than the absolutely maniacal Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II. Make no mistake: while this one may sound like another typical cheesy ‘80s slasher, it is anything but. Amazing special effects, unhinged performances, and truly jaw-dropping lines of dialogue make it stand out above its peers. So shove those Duraflame logs under your lighter fluid dress and grab your Diet Pepsi as we discuss Mary Lou and all her antics. Plus, Nathan’s incredible Wal-Mart story, the definitive worst band, and of course Prom Bon Jovi’s classic hit “It’s Prom Night” all await you. We promise you won’t want to miss this one.

Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II stars Michael Ironside, Wendy Lyon, Justin Louis, Lisa Schrage, and Richard Monette. Directed by Bruce Pittman.

For over 25 years, Johnny Knoxville and his gang of misfits, maniacs, and masochists have entertained us all with their outrageous stunts and goofs. With the release of the new trailer Jackass: Best and Last, however, it feels like a swan song for the franchise even more than Jackass Forever was. Watch along with us on YouTube or simply listen to us watch the trailer and react to it.

Jackass: Best and Last stars Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Preston Lacy, Dave England, "Danger Ehren" McGhehey, Sean "Poopies" McInerney, Zach Holmes, Jasper Dolphin, Rachel Wolfson and Compston "Dark Shark" Wilson. Directed by Jeff Tremaine.

Conspiracy theories appear to be on the rise these past few years as seemingly everything is a contrived plot by the rich and powerful to trick the general public into…something. Bugonia explores that idea to the extreme while still maintaining Yorgos Lanthimos’s dark comedic sensibilities and sharp direction. What happens when someone who’s deep in the rabbit hole decides to enact a plan to prove their theory by any means necessary? Turns out it doesn’t go quite as expected. So put on your tinfoil hats and inject those nondescript chemicals (and our episode) directly into your veins as we discuss the movie, plus corporate apology tours (looking at you, Burger King), mailing live insects to your friends, the canon event that is Movie 43, and so much more.

Bugonia stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, Alicia Silverstone, and J. Carmen Galindez Barrera. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

We're back with another mini-episode reacting to the trailer for the latest entry in the Insidious universe with Insidious: Out of the Further. Surprisingly, even six films into the franchise, this one appears to have the juice. Watch along with us on YouTube or simply listen to the eerie soundscapes and creepy effects that lurk the trailer for this flick.

Insidious: Out of the Further stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Lin Shaye. Directed by Jacob Chase.

We’re continuing the theme of “rebirth” on the podcast as we revisit one of the more maligned films in the X-Men cinematic universe. X-Men Origins: Wolverine was supposed to set up a new branch of films exploring…well, the origins of the X-Men. But this one was panned by both critics and audiences, so Fox did a reset and gave us First Class after instead. However, if you haven’t revisited Origins in a while, it may be time to do so because this one is probably better than you remember (minus that entire third act.) So settle in to a nice adamantium bath and light up a cigar as we tear into the film, plus discuss such topics as the chokehold the Black Eyed Peas had on America in the aughts, how the X-Men could have prevented 9/11, the now decanonized Punch Dimension, and so much more with returning guest and X-Men “lover” John Houzer.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins, and will.i.am. Directed by Gavin Hood.

Easter is next week which makes it the perfect time to discuss the time one of the members of the Mount Rushmore of slashers was reborn – kind of. We’re of course talking about 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection. If you haven’t seen it in a while, it may be time to revisit it so you can adjust your rankings of the Halloween films accordingly because this has to be the worst of the bunch. Half-baked characters and awful cinematography doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of this dreadful movie. That being said, our episode is way more enjoyable than whatever it is Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks are producing (which isn’t saying much, but, you get it.) Tune in as we discuss how Loomis would appeal to Gens Z and Alpha, Tracy Morgan playing Michael Myers, and of course MrBeast hosting season 2 of Dangertainment. All of that and more with returning guest Michael Moss. Trick or treat, motherf----r!

Halloween: Resurrection stars Busta Rhymes, Bianca Kajlich, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Ryan Merriman, Sean Patrick Thomas, Tyra Banks, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Directed by Rick Rosenthal.

Not every A24 horror flick is a slam dunk. Such is the case with Love Lies Bleeding director Rose Glass’s first film Saint Maud. Despite a fantastic lead performance and incredible imagery, the movie spends 80 minutes spinning its wheels before suddenly revealing an explosive ending that almost makes up for the lack of story that came before it - but not quite. So sit back and witness the tale of Saint Maud as we discuss the movie, plus Maud’s Creed-inspired wings, what JT’s initials actually stand for, and of course, Bea Arthur as Maude.

Saint Maud stars Morfydd Clark, Jennifer Ehle, Lily Knight, Lily Frazer, and Turlough Convery. Directed by Rose Glass.
