Luke joins Leon this week via the telephone, given the covid precautions in Canberra. Leon starts the show by expressing how much he dislikes the term ‘salary sacrificing’, because you’re not in actually sacrificing anything, you’re just diverting your salary for something else that will be of benefit. It’s more like diverting money than sacrificing it.

      Key highlights include:

      • What is salary sacrifice?
      • What should you think about before you make the decision to use the salary sacrifice strategy this new financial year?
      • Do you know your concessional contribution cap for salary sacrificing into super this year?
      • How do you work out the ‘concession contribution cap’, remembering I have to take into account employer contributions?
      • What about if you work for the government, does that make things different?
      • Did you know you can put money into your super without going via your employer and still get a tax deduction?
      • Why would you save money into an offset account if you have a home loan?
      • What is a notice of intent?
      • What might you think about before making the decision to  salary sacrifice?
      • Remember that you can change what you salary sacrifice through the year
      • Luke shares his top tips for making the most of salary sacrifice as a super strategy.

Luke and Leon however start the show by talking about end of year financial planning. If you haven’t started yet it is almost too late. Luke provides a reminder that super contributions must be cleared and in your super fund – not in transit or pending by 30 June if you’re looking to boost your super and claim a tax deduction. We hope you don’t miss the deadline. Stepping forward though, what are your goals and ambitions for the new financial year?

        • Luke on 2CC – What can I prepay before 30 June?

30 June is just around the corner – is there anything you should prepay?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 18 June 2021. This week’s topic: What can you prepay before 30 June?

Luke and Leon however start the show by talking about the legislative changes that occurred this week. As Luke wisely points out, don’t think that ‘stapled’ to your super fund means that you’re stuck with your super fund forever. This legislation doesn’t mean that you no longer have super choice. What it does do though is that your super fund will travel with you when you change jobs. This is particularly important for young workers who change jobs often and generally don’t pay much attention to super. Importantly if you want to switch super funds, you still can.

          Key highlights include:

          • 30 June is fast approaching – how well prepared are you?
          • Did you know you might be able to prepay and expense for next year, but claim at tax deduction for it this financial year?
          • Be sure you speak to your tax accountant or trusted adviser to ensure the item you prepay is tax deductible
          • You can prepay things like interest on an investment margin loan
          • Business expenses should also be considered if you run a business
          • Income protection can also be prepaid and it’s an expense that is generally tax deductible against your personal income
          • Don’t just think about the tax deduction, there could be other financial situations to consider, such as if you’re approaching retirement
          • What will happen over the next 12 months ,is there a benefit to doing something now?
          • Offset home loan accounts might be beneficial to help make you make a deductible super contribution this year
          • Think about carry forward contributions in super that you can claim as a tax deduction too
          • If you’re a business owner, talk to your accountant proactively to see how they can help you manage 30 June issues
          • Think about what you want to do now – don’t leave it too late to act
          • Luke shares his key strategy points for making the most of the end of financial year – but time is running out
          • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

          • Luke on 2CC – Capital Gains Tax and June 30

What is Capital Gains Tax and can you manage it?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 11 June 2021. This week’s topic: Capital Gains Tax and June 30.

Luke starts the show with a timely reminder about making contributions to super before June 30. As Luke says, if you make your contributions early, you’ll never be late. This week though the topic is Capital Gains Tax (CGT). A Capital Gain occurs when you sell a capital asset like real estate or an investment. It’s the difference between what you paid for the asset and what you sold it for. In Australia, if you sell the asset for more than you paid for it, you will need to pay Capital Gains Tax unless it is an exempt asset, like your main residence.

            Key highlights include:

            • The end of financial year is fast approaching – about 3 weeks from the time of recording this podcast.
            • What should you be thinking about Capital Gains right now? Should you sell assets before June 30?
            • How is Capital Gains Tax calculated?
            • How does the discount work?
            • Think about the entity in which you sell the asset too
            • Can you use loses to offset gains in other assets?
            • Is there something right now you can sell right now?
            • Don’t leave it too late to think about your options and seek advice
            • Think about the CGT as an event that’s triggered when you sell an asset. This means you can lock a loss in and buy back the asset.
            • Can you use the carry forward concessional rules to add money into super and claim a tax deduction?
            • If you’re close to pension age, perhaps there is an opportunity to wait and not sell the asset until you’re in pension phase of super. Again seek advice for your personal situation.
            • What happens if you have a house you move out and rent it for a period but then move back in? Do you have to pay CGT?
            • Luke shares his tips around how people can manage their Capital Gains Tax obligations.
            • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

            • Luke on 2CC – The Federal Budget 2021-22

Is there anything in the Federal Budget I should know about?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 4 June 2021. This week’s topic: The Federal Budget 2021-22.

Although the Federal Budget was handed down a short while ago, it takes some time to really look into the detail and do the analysis to work out the wins and losses. It’s important to remember that the budget announcement is just that – an announcement. The proposals don’t become law until they are passed by both houses of parliament.

In this episode Luke provides his insights into the Federal Budget 2021-22.

              Key highlights include:

              • Wait until the proposals become law before you take action and as always seek advice if you need to.
              • A proposal to remove the minimum threshold of $450 for super payments. This means people earning $450 or less would be eligible to receive super guarantee payments from their employer.
              • A proposal for the removal of the work test for people aged 67 to 74. This means that people can put money into super without having to work. It’s also a great opportunity to use the downsizing legislation, where you can downsize your home and put money into super.
              • A proposal to allow people over 65 to use the bring-forward super rules. This will mean people over 65 can use this strategy.
              • An opportunity to increase the amount of money you can put into super from 1 July 2021 (both tax deductible and non-deductible super contributions).
              • A proposal to lower the age the downsizing rules from 65 to 60. This will mean people from the age of 60 can use this strategy and fund your retirement sooner.
              • A proposal to increase the amount of money available in the first home buyers through the super home buying scheme.
              • A proposed change to the residency test for self-managed super funds to allow people outside of Australia to control a SMSF.
              • Super contributions from your employer will rise from 9.5% to 10% from 1 July 2021 – this has been passed. So all working people entitled to receive super should expect to see an increased contribution from their employer into their super from this date.
              • Luke offers his strategy tips for making the most of the changes once they become law.
              • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

              • Luke on 2CC – Super contributions before June 30

Should you make a super contribution before the end of financial year?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 28 May 2021. This week’s topic: Should I make a contribution to super before June 30?

With less than a month to go, now is the time to think about your super strategy and make a contribution to your superannuation fund. Many people leave making contributions to super too late and miss out on the benefits.

In this episode Luke provides his insights and tips into the factors you might think about before making a contribution to super.

                Key highlights include:

                • The money must be cleared in the super fund before 30 June to apply to this financial year.
                • Check with your super fund to see when they are closing their contribution window for the financial year.
                • Don’t presume you should make a contribution, it might not actually provide any extra benefit – talk to your adviser.
                • Be aware of how much you can put into super to get a tax deduction and what your cap space is.
                • Where can the money come from to make a contribution?
                • A transition to retirement pension can also be used to fund additional super contributions.
                • Is there ever a good reason to borrow money to put into super?
                • Don’t forget you can also make non-concessional (non-deductible contributions) to super
                • Downsizing legislation provides opportunity for older people selling their homes too.
                • Don’t forget about Capital Gains Tax if you’re liquidating an asset to make a super contribution.
                • Carry forward contributions also allow you to use unused contributions from previous years.
                • Luke shares his strategy tips for making contributions – don’t forget about the ‘Notice of Intent’ with your super fund in you want a tax deduction.

                • Luke on 2CC – Which investment structures should you use?
Have you thought about investment structures as part of your decision making?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 21 May 2021. This week’s topic: Which structures should you use when it comes to your investments?

This question might not be a question for you’ve thought about. If you have money to save and invest, then it might be worth your while thinking about which investment structure you use.

In this episode Luke provides his insights and tips into the factors you might think about.

                  Key highlights include:

                  • Where you hold something is something you need to consider
                  • I buy it in my own name or in the name of myself and my partner are not the only options
                  • Don’t just think about the buying – think long term about the selling too – you may get a better outcome with a different structure
                  • An example of a structure is a family trust, Luke gives an example with income, capital gains and estate planning issues
                  • There are also benefits of a family trust from an asset protection perspective
                  • Seek advice if you need help to make an informed decision
                  • A company is also a structure that can be used – it’s different from a family trust, but can be used with a family trust
                  • Are there costs to setting up family trusts and company structures?
                  • What should people generally consider when thinking about where to hold assets?
                  • Does the kind of asset you want to buy impact on the kind of structure you want to use?
                  • Superannuation is also a kind of investment structure that you can be used
                  • Luke shares his strategy tips for using investment structures
                  • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

                  • Luke on 2CC – Should I buy an investment property or put my money into super?
Investment property versus superannuation – what are the key issues?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 14 May 2021. This week’s topic: Property – Should I buy another investment property or should I put my money into super?

This question might not be a question for you right now, but what will you do when you have some extra funds available? And if you do have some extra funds available, will you leave them in a low interest savings account or will you try and invest them to get a better return?

In this episode Luke provides his insights and tips into the factors you might think about.

                    Key highlights include:

                    • As always it starts with Why? What are your goals, why are you seeking to invest?
                    • It’s not about one is better than the other, it’s about understanding the issues before you make a decision
                    • Why might you consider property? How much will it return? Think about net income after expenses.
                    • Depending on how you structure things, you might be able to invest in both super and property?
                    • Don’t forget about liquidity – you can’t sell part of a property if you need access to only some of the money.
                    • Interest rates are low, so people are borrowing more to buy property.
                    • Can you buy a residential or  commercial property in a self managed super fund?
                    • What are the basic pros and cons for property and for superannuation?
                    • Think about your time frame and your risk profile too.
                    • Does it make a difference on how old you are?
                    • Luke offers his top tips for thinking about these issues, including the opportunity to do both.
                    • Seek advice if you need help to make an informed decision.
                    • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

                    • Luke on 2CC – Should I renovate or should I move?
Property – What will you do when your property no longer fits your life?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 7 May 2021. This week’s topic: Property – Should I renovate or should I move? It’s a fairly straight forward question but there’s quite a lot to think about once you scratch the surface.

Life changes and while your home might fit you right now, there are many factors that might make it not suitable for your needs in the future. Perhaps you have a growing family and you need more room for instance. Or perhaps the kids have moved out and you’re rattling around in too much space.

In this episode Luke provides his insights and tips into the factors you might think about.

                      Key highlights include:

                      • The dangers of being a young thunder cat and borrowing too much, when interest rates are low.
                      • It’s hard to find trades people right now, and house prices are high so it might seem neither option is great.
                      • Don’t forget about stamp duty.
                      • If you are 65 years or older and meet the eligibility criteria, there is a superannuation downsizing opportunity if you’re buying something smaller.
                      • What happens if interest rates rise and you have borrowed to renovate or move?
                      • Are you happy in your current suburb?
                      • Do your math, how much will moving cost in total? Could that be put towards a renovation?
                      • Inner versus outer suburbs – there’s a difference in cost if you’re thinking of moving.
                      • How long do you need the extra space for?
                      • There’s no capital gains tax on selling your own home, so it might be worthwhile to improve the value of your property that you may sell in the future.
                      • What are the key factors to think about if you make the decision to move?
                      • If you’re downsizing, what are your options with the money left over? Don’t forget about the impact on Centrelink if that’s an issue for you.
                      • Luke offers his top tips for thinking about these issues to help you make an informed decision.
                      • Seek advice if you need help to make an informed decision.
                      • Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.
