  • Luke on 2CC – Retiring with an account-based pension
How do you turn your super into income when you retire?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 12 February 2021. This week’s topic: What is an account-based pension and how does it work?  But before they start talking financial matters, Luke is more than just a little excited, he’s just taken his first ride in a helicopter and arrived at 2CC in the field next to the car park. You’ll hear in his voice how much he loved it.

In recent weeks Luke has looked at growing your super. Last week he spoke about transitioning to retirement from full time work. This week Luke explores the account-based pension. Many Australian’s use this investment vehicle to turn their superannuation savings into a retirement income stream.

    Key highlights include:

    • You’re retiring from the workforce and you want to turn your super into pension payments to help fund your retirement
    • Underlying investments don’t need to change – despite what some people might think
    • Pension payments can be taken fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or even less often, depending on what your provider offers
    • Earnings on account-based pensions are tax free. And if you held shares or other investments in the fund, you don’t pay capital gains tax when you sell them in this pension phase.
    • The transfer balance cap however does apply if you have more than $1.6 million in your pension fund.
    • So what is the transfer balance cap and how is this tax calculated?
    • Why is the transfer balanced cap indexed?
    • Once you start a pension, can you add more contributions to super?
    • What are the Centrelink implications of an account-based pension?
    • It’s possible to have an account-based pension and a Centrelink pension, depending on your circumstances
    • Explore the other benefits too – discounts on electricity, licensee fees and pharmaceuticals, they all add up
    • Some strategies to think about while considering your own plan for retirement
    • A free appointment offer to talk about your own financial planning goals. Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

    • Luke on 2CC – Transition to retirement pension
Have you heard about this pathway to retirement?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 29 January 2021. This week’s topic: Transition to retirement pension – what is it and how does it work?

In recent weeks Luke has looked at how to boost your retirement savings before you retire from work. This week Luke explores a pathway to retirement, called the ‘transition to retirement’ pension. While many people who are exploring their retirement options might have heard of this, few really understand how it can work effectively for them, until they seek advice.

      Key highlights include:

      • When it comes to retirement – most people would like to retire sooner.
      • What does retirement mean to you? For Luke it means being able to afford to spend your time as you’d like to.
      • The modern idea of retirement is not all or nothing, now many retirees are happy to work part time. So with this in mind, if you reduce your work hours, you can top up your earnings with a payment from your super, through a transition to retirement pension.
      • How much of an income can you take as a pension payment from your super? What is the minimum or maximum you can take? There are rules around how much you can have, so it’s important to plan your transition to retirement to make sure it financially works for you.
      • Transition to retirement might also be available for people who find themselves with reduced hours, through no fault of their own and through an event like Covid.
      • Can income from a transition to retirement pension be tax free? It depends on your age and a few other things!
      • A transition to retirement pension can also be used to pay down debt or receive a tax deduction by putting money back into your super or your spouses super. So it can be more than just an income strategy, depending on your situation.
      • If you haven’t made super contributions, you can use the catch up legislation to boost your super before you fully retire, using potentially tax free money from your transition to retirement pension, while you work reduced hours.
      • Luke’s top tips using the transition to retirement pension strategy and strategies you might consider. It’s also an opportunity for people who have defined benefit super fund and a spouse who doesn’t.
      • A free appointment offer to talk about your own financial planning goals. Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

      • Luke on 2CC – How to contribute to super – Part 2
A strategy to contribute to super can help your retirement

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 29 January 2021. This week’s topic: Contributing to superannuation – Part 2.

Luke takes a look at ways people can contribute to super and in this episode he takes a deep dive into non-concessional contributions and the $1.6 million contributions cap. Luke and Leon however start the show by talking about the Australian Open, it’s just around the corner and most of the players have been let of out of hotel quarantine. Some of them haven’t been very kind about being locked up in a hotel for 14 days, but there’s no special rules for tennis players.

        Key highlights include:

        • Retirement sneaks up on you, the sooner you start, the more time on your side you have.
        • So what are non-concessional contributions to superannuation?
        • You might have money for a non-concessional contribution by saving it, the sale of an asset, inheritance, or a lotto win.
        • Because you don’t claim a tax deduction, you can put in $100,000 per year (not $25,000). You can also add $300,000 all at once, if you’re under 65, but time limits apply on when you can next make a non-concessional contribution.
        • People also need to be mindful of the transfer balance cap which applies to your super balance.
        • Can I make a non concessional-contribution to super if you’re 65? Yes you can, if you meet the work test.
        • Where else can you use this contribution type to set yourself up for a better retirement? Consider your spouse!
        • The facts about the $1.6 million contribution cap – it doesn’t mean you can’t have more than that in super, it’s just the amount your can enjoy as tax free earnings in your retirement.
        • What are some key strategies you might consider around non-concessional contributions and the contribution cap?
        • A free appointment offer to talk about your own financial planning goals. Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

        • Luke on 2CC – How to contribute to super?
A strategy to contribute to super can help your retirement

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 22 January 2021. This week’s topic: Contributing to superannuation.

Luke takes a look at ways people can contribute to super, the limits that apply to super contributions and how you can actually make a contribution to your account. In this episode, Luke talks about how simple super isn’t really that simple. Super however is worth spending some time on. You might be able to save some tax as well as increase the funds you have available for your retirement.

          Key highlights include:

          • It’s not surprising things are confusing, the simple super system isn’t so simple.
          • Many people have depleted their super in order to get through the Covid Financial Crisis.
          • Contributing to super can help grow your retirement nest egg. Starting early and contributing often can make a difference over time.
          • Generally there are two ways to make a contribution to super. A concessional contribution (which means you get a tax deduction). A non-concessional contribution (which means you don’t get a tax deduction).
          • Contribution caps means that you have a $25,000 limit on the amount you can put into super each year and get a tax deduction.
          • If you go over your contributions cap, you might be able to use the carry forward contribution legislation, by using unused contributions from the previous financial year.
          • Currently employers are required to contribute 9.5% of you wage to super. Just say that’s worth $15,000. As a $25,000 cap applies, this means you have the opportunity to contribute $10,000 and receive a tax deduction.
          • If you’re with PSS and CSS or another Government super scheme, check your fund websites and login to check your concessional cap – these funds operate differently.
          • The other kind of contribution you can make is a non-concessional contribution or a non-deductible contribution – this means you put money into super and don’t get a tax deduction.
          • There’s also a limit on non-concessional contributions and it’s $100,000 per year, but there is a special opportunity of up to $300,000 under the carry forward rules. This is a great way for pre-retirees to boost their super.
          • If you retire with an account based pension balance of up to $1.6 million – the income and earnings from that account are tax free.
          • There are opportunities for over 60’s still working to use a pension to fund tax deductible contributions to super.
          • If you’re self employed, there’s also strategies from the sale of a business to get money into super you might explore.
          • Is there a difference between a super fund and a self managed fund with regard to making super contributions?
          • What are the strategies for super contributions you might consider?
          • A free appointment offer to talk about your own financial planning goals. Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.

          • Luke on 2CC – Super fees, are you paying too much?
Are you getting value from the super fees you pay?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 15 January 2021. This week’s topic: Superannuation fees – it’s worth the effort to take a closer look.

Luke takes a look at what you’re paying in super fees. Many of us have probably never thought about how much our super fund is charging to have our account with them.  Fees do vary though and as Luke points out taking the time to take a look can save you money. In this podcast Luke tells us about the kinds of fees we should be looking out for and how to figure out if we’re getting a good or bad deal. Of course, if you need help, seek financial advice. There is help available.

            Key highlights include:

            • All superannuation funds charge fees, and some of them make it hard to find the fees.
            • Different funds apply different fees, so not all of them might apply to you.
            • What are the kinds of fees you should look out for?
              • Administration fee
              • ICR – Internal Cost Ratio or Indirect Cost Ratio
              • Borrowing costs
              • Property costs
              • Transaction costs
              • Larger accounts might benefit from a self managed fund, which typically have fixed fees
              • Can you save money with fees?
              • What do you actually need in a super fund?
              • How to move super funds if you want to change your fund.

                • Luke on 2CC – New Year Financial Resolutions
What are your financial goals for the new year?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in The Money Show which aired on Friday 8 January 2021. This week’s topic: Setting your new year resolutions – including financial goals.

Luke takes a look at setting financial goals for 2021. Many of us are glad to see the start of a new year and hopefully better days ahead. All Australians were impacted by Covid in 2020. We’re delighted that the trend of low case numbers continues across the country, given the outbreak on Sydney’s northern beaches late last year.  Setting resolutions though can be hard, and keeping them throughout the year is perhaps even harder. In this episode, Luke talks about how to set achievable financial goals for the year ahead.

                  Key highlights include:

                  • Farewell to 2020. We’re glad to see that year in the rear view mirror.
                  • Think about your goals across different time frames. Not everything needs to happen today.
                  • Goals can be set as either short term, medium term or long-term goals, and they can dovetail into each other.
                  • If you don’t achieve a goal, that’s ok. Hit re-set and try again. Also, don’t forget about reviewing your goals.
                  • Now’s a great time to check your spending – especially on things like super, insurance, loans (interest rates) and other spending that you might not have thought about. Work out your living costs and get rid of the things you don’t need.
                  • Comparing your goals with someone else’s goals can be dangerous. Everyone’s situation is different.
                  • Don’t be unrealistic with your goal setting. Being unrealistic often leads to disappointment.
                  • Reward yourself for achieving your goals! Remember to celebrate your success.
                  • Be consistent with good behaviour. Good behaviour is likely to have the biggest impact on your success in the long-term.
                  • Luke shares his top 3 tips for 2021 to help you get started, and
                  • A free appointment offer to talk about your own financial planning goals. Everyone has different goals and financial planning advice can help you achieve them more effectively, especially when you link different strategies.
