Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/wilma-pinedo

Hey everybody! Episode 26 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Doña Wilma Pinedo. Wilma was introduced to me through mutual friends. She comes from a long lineage of respected Quechua paqo’s – Wisdom Keepers - in the mystical tradition of the Peruvian Andes. She works with plants as well as the power of nature and its elements in her practice. She has real wisdom and presence and it was a pleasure to sit down and speak with her. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. To view bonus material and extended conversations, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Doña Wilma Pinedo is a fourth-generation Healer, Shaman, and Medicine Woman from the Andean Sacred Valley In Peru.  She comes from a long lineage of well-respected healers and teachers, and was Initiated from before birth, by Father Sky - while pregnant with Wilma, her mother was struck by lightning.

Wilma began apprenticing with her elders at the age of 2, and by age 12 she was formally initiated as a healer in the Andean tradition, reading coca leaves and using her intuition to tell people how to heal themselves, often with amazing results.

Wilma's family includes a long list of well-known and deeply revered Masters, including her father Martín Pinedo, mother María Sánchez, and great-uncle Don Benito Qoriwaman - who taught teachers Juan Nuñez del Prado, América Yabar and Oscar Miro-Quesada, and introduced Alberto Villoldo to the Q'eros nation. Her great-grandfather and a master from the Waskar Lineage, Don Melchor Desa, also taught Juan Nuñez del Prado.

Wilma learned English (a rarity in the Andes) and was one of the people asked to accompany the Dalai Lama to Machu Picchu. She uses her gift as a tool for healing, peace, and unity.”

Hey everybody! Episode 24 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Chase Moore. Chase and I met in the Sacred Valley where he teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu and runs ceremonies with Huachuma or San Pedro. Chase has a really interesting story and it was a pleasure speaking with him. We got into talking about plant medicine, martial arts, and life in general. I have a lot of respect for anyone who completes their black belt in jiu-jitsu and I think Chase embodies a lot of those principles such as humility, integrity, gentleness, and compassion. For me, martial arts and plant medicine are wonderful complements so it was great to speak with someone who has a depth of knowledge of both. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. To view bonus material and extended conversations, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Chase and Anna make up the heart of the Spirit Cooperative. Chase provides San Pedro Ceremonies with some 5 years of experience with plant medicine. During his own personal journey of profound healing with San Pedro, he realized that helping others to experience the same healing possibilities was his calling and life-mission. Chase draws from 15 years of experience in martial arts training as part of his strong foundation as a teacher and guide. His sweet southern manner is a catalyst for helping you feel safe, supported and able to open to vulnerability.”

Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/b-r-best

Hey everybody! In this show, I spoke with my friend Brian Best. Brian and I met when I first came to the Amazon. Brian is a fascinating guy who I have a lot of respect for. He has a knowledge of the Shipibo language and culture that is unparalleled. He carries a deep respect for their wisdom and medicine and is a phenomenal bridge to gaining insight into the world of plant medicine. I knew this would be one of my favorite interviews and it didn't disappoint. It was an epic conversation of 4.5 hours and there is a lot of priceless knowledge and wisdom that he shared. In the first half of the show, we spoke about Brian's journey and in the second half, we got into language, medicine, and cosmovision. I think you all will gain a tremendous amount from this interview. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Brian is a linguistic anthropologist and an ecological sanitation specialist, who has been a student of Manuela since 2011. His studies led him to the Ucayali River region where he has been sharing and learning with the Shipibo-Konibo since 2003.  In 2016 he began focusing on Shipibo-Konibo language revitalization and received a master’s degree in Native American Languages and Linguistics in 2019. His thesis, Jakón Jói, examines the links between Indigenous language dictionaries and Indigenous Decolonization and describes an ongoing project to create an online Shipibo-Konibo dictionary.

He continues to provide assistance to the NGO Alianza Arkana while serving as the interim administrator for Jakon Rate.  To the amusement of Manuela, Jurriën and others, he tries –often unsuccessfully– to find time to observe dieta while balancing work and a young family. Brian lives near Manuela and provides full-time assistance on many levels.”

Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/americo-lopez-sanchez

Hey everybody! Episode 22 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Américo Lopez Sanchez. Américo and I met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center The Temple of the Way of Light where he worked as a curandero or doctor. Américo is a great doctor who has a real gift and a desire to share his knowledge. He is always trying to grow himself and become a better doctor and person. He works a lot with youth trying to pass on his knowledge of plants and Shipibo culture. I have a lot of respect for Américo and I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to my friend Carolina for translating and opening up the conversation to a much larger audience. Thank you! As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Américo Lopez Sanchez shipibo name is Pekon Nima, which means “the many colors of nature.”

Américo carried these formative early experiences with him and was inspired by his father, Jose Lopez, and his work as a prominent healer. He decided to follow in his footsteps to become a healer in his own right, to help those who were suffering, misplaced, or otherwise seeking healing.

Américo loves being of service and is aware of the importance of traditional plant treatment, especially in communities where people find it challenging to access pharmaceutical medications.

Américo loves working with children and used to be a school teacher. He is deeply eloquent with a gift for storytelling. He tells us that in olden times, there was a direct line of healing from gestation with diets and song.”

Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/jheison-ochavano

Hey everybody! Episode 21 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Romulo. Romulo and I met at the Amazonian plant-medicine center The Temple of the Way of Light, where we ran ceremonies together. Romulo comes from a lineage of Shipibo plant doctors or curanderos. He is one of the most dedicated doctors I have met and really spends a great deal of time and care on the patients he works with. He is also quite young for a doctor and I think he is one of the harbingers of a new generation of Shipibo doctors. He has a beautiful ability to share and express complex ideas simply. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to Tanya Kammonen for translating and opening up the conversation to a larger audience. She was juggling quite a few roles in this podcast and her effort was admirable. “Jheison Romulo Sinuiri Ochavano or Iskon Beso is Shipibo from the May Joshin or Ucayali region of Peru. He is a traditional medicine practitioner and lineage holder who has been studying since a very young age, with his grandfathers and parents. In addition to the practice of traditional medicine, he has studied nursing and psychology and investigated a wide range of complementary spiritual practices. He’s an artist, musician, father, and investigator. He eloquently shares teachings with the intentions of respect and clarity, holding the guidance of the past and staying present to the current day. He is the president of Oni Xobo, an intercultural organization based in Pucallpa, Peru.”

  • Ep. 20 - Tanya Kammonen - Naturopathic Doctor, Plant Medicine, and Integration

Hey everybody! Episode 20 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Tanya Kammonen. Tanya and I met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center the Temple of the Way of Light. Tanya headed the Integration team at the Temple and facilitated workshops there as well. Tanya has a really interesting background and brings a depth of knowledge and experience to her work. I have seen her work deeply with and help many people. She has a lot to share and continues to go deeper into her own work and within the Shipibo tradition. Tanya went pretty deep and spoke about some really important things within this work. It was a great conversation and I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And to view the extended version of this interview, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Tanya Kammonen has Finnish, Irish, Ukrainian, and Hungarian roots. She grew up in Canada close to a river and has been interested in consciousness and spirituality since before having words for those concepts. She studied biology and naturopathic medicine and after seeing an increasing number of patients in her practice looking for help with integration post-ayahuasca, allowed that to become a full-time pursuit and became the first Integration Director with the Temple of the Way of Light, developing methodology and programming to help people make sense of their experiences and impactful changes in their lives. Since becoming a mom to her incredible son she has been consulting in various plant medicine-related projects and is part of the founding team of Oni Xobo, an intercultural organization that investigates designs, and implements projects related to medicine, art, culture, and environment, through a lens of divine love. Her intention is to apply and share what she has learned in ways that are true and inspiring to other human beings.”

Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/nelson-barbaran-gomez

Hey everybody! Episode 19 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Nelson Barbaran Gómez. Nelson and I have worked together for a number of years running ayahuasca ceremonies. He comes from the Shipibo lineage of working with plants and brings a joy and openness to his work that is tangible. He also works with a great deal of integrity and has a real desire to help and to share. For these reasons, I think he is a really good example of a great curandero. He is leading the way for a new generation of doctors and he has a lot to share and offer. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to my friend Carolina for translating and opening up the conversation to a much larger audience. Thank you! As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Nelson’s Shipibo name is Isasina, meaning “a bird who takes care of others.”

Nelson comes from a family of curanderos; both his father and grandfather practiced medicine. His parents died when he was very young, and very early on he started sitting in ceremonies held by his older brother, who is also a curandero. Lacking parental guidance, Nelson learned from the medicine “how to be a good human being.”

Nelson drank ayahuasca for the first time at age twelve and was immediately fascinated by the medicine world… After a year, his brother agreed to initiate Nelson on the path to become a Shipibo Onanya…

He is also passionate about his own culture and sees his work as a vehicle to recover and preserve traditional practices and knowledge in a rapidly changing world. He enjoys seeing schools in some native communities teaching the Shipibo language again, encouraging kids to dress in their traditional clothes, address each other in their Shipibo names, and is proud of his role in the current revitalization of the Shipibo culture.”

  • Ep. 18 - Safa Roberts - Yoga, Pranic Healing, and Plant Medicine

Hey everybody! Episode 18 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Safa. Safa is a yoga instructor, pranic healing and plant medicine practitioner who I met at the Amazon healing center The Temple of the Way of Light, where she led worked as a teacher and facilitator of ceremonies. She spent a long time living in India studying deeply yoga and pranic healing and eventually came to the Amazon to learn in-depth the traditional Shipibo lineage of working with plants. She works in the Sacred Valley of Peru with her partner Felix, who I interviewed in episode 14. Safa has a lot to share and I think you all will very much enjoy this conversation. And check out Patreon for the full interview. Best!

“Safa (Soi Kete in Shipibo) brings a wide variety of skills to the team and has been dedicated to the medicine for over twelve years. Residing in India for several years, she trained in yoga, specializing in breathwork and study of the subtle or energy body. She ran her own yoga school and lead yoga trainings worldwide from 2011-2015. Through this work she gained extensive experience facilitating groups through deeply personal and transformational experiences.

Safa has been deeply involved in the study and practice of energetic healing for over fifteen years. Originally certified in Pranic Healing, she has since studied with many teachers of various modalities to broaden her repertoire of skills. She has been working with the Shipibo to learn energetic healing directly from the plants and brings this highly specialized work into the ceremony space.

Facilitating for various medicine centers in Peru, she has acquired a strong repertoire of emotional/mental processing tools that help to bridge western pathology and understanding with the Shipibo paradigm of healing. Honoring the Shipibo lineage, she continues to study and diet with her maestro Soi in his community of Nueva Betania.

  • Ep. 17 - Carlos Tanner - Plant Medicine, Education, and Research

Hey everybody! Episode 17 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with Carlos Tanner. Carlos is the founder and director of the Ayahuasca Foundation, one of the leading ayahuasca retreat, education, and research centers located in Iquitos, Peru. I really enjoyed this conversation. It’s always good to speak to someone who has a depth of knowledge that comes from years of experience working in this field. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode as Carlos really expressed lucidly and beautifully this work on many different levels. Enjoy! And starting next episode I will begin releasing extended interviews of most of the episodes exclusively on Patreon, so check out more on that below.

“Carlos Tanner is the director of the Ayahuasca Foundation, where he organizes healing retreats, educational courses, and plant medicine research led by Shipibo curanderos in the rainforest of Peru. His journey with ayahuasca began in 2003 with his own profound healing experience, leading him to move to Iquitos, Peru in 2004 to live and apprentice with a curandero named don Juan. Four years later he came up with the idea for the Ayahuasca Foundation, which has helped over a thousand retreat participants as well as over five hundred students of the Shipibo healing tradition. Along the way he got married, had a child, and built a research center that hosts ayahuasca medical research. He supports the decriminalization of plant medicines on a global scale and looks forward to a new era of medicine that centers around a consciousness based understanding of health.”
