  • V8SP: Steve Owen (Part 2)

We’re talking to Supercars race winner and multiple Super2 Series champion Steve Owen on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast polished by Bowden’s Own. In the second and final part of a two-part chat, he talks about the scary moment during the 2006 Adelaide 500 where he passed out behind the wheel due to the severe in-car heat, and stepping back to the Development Series twice and winning both times.

He also talks about joining Triple Eight as a co-driver and winning his first Supercars Championship race - in ‘budgie smugglers’ - and landing a full-time return to the category, and opens up on his fiery start-line shunt with Karl Reindler at Barbagallo in 2011, as well as his race-winning spell as an Enduro Cup co-driver at Tickford Racing. He also tackles your National Motor Racing Museum Couch Racer Questions - well, what was left of them, as he answered a lot of them during the course of the main chat!

RACE CONTROL: A new addition to the V8 Sleuth Podcast, Aaron Noonan chats with Supercars’ Driving Standards Advisor, Motorsport Australia’s Craig Baird, who explains all the details behind the calls made in Race Control during the latest Supercars round.

Included in this post-2023 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 edition:

    - David Reynolds cutting the first chicane while battling to hold off Brodie Kostecki for the win on the final lap of the Sunday race

    - James Golding’s flick-spin on the exit of the first chicane that led to Scott Pye hitting the wall late in the Sunday race

    - Matt Payne and James Courtney’s showdown at the Beach Chicane during the Saturday race that resulted in a five-second time penalty for Payne

    - Contact between Andre Heimgartner and Todd Hazelwood late in the Sunday race that resulted in a 15-second time penalty for Heimgartner.

    - The new kerb-hop sensors, bad sportsmanship flags, and why drivers, teams and fans aren’t told just how many kerb-hops a driver has left

    - The big misconception about what the bad sportsmanship flag actually means for how many ‘lives’ a driver has left

    - Barry Ryan’s suggestion on something MotoGP does that Supercars could employ to balance out chicane-cutting
