In today's episode, Marie Lewis shares how her son's life with autism changed her life. She hired multiple lawyers and kept demanding that her son be helped. By the time her son was leaving school, she realized that she could help others advocate for their children. Her background as a nurse administrator gave her a unique perspective on the IEP. She relates the IEP to a care plan. Anyone who has taken her course hears these words repeatedly during her training: Specially designed instruction and well-written goals make a great IEP. My guest today is Tanya English. She is a chiropractor from Iowa who has found healing through not only chiropractic care, as you normally think about it, but she also incorporates other techniques into her practice to support healing without "cracking" the bones. In this episode, she decreases some pain in my back. We also talk about the reticular activating system.

The reticular activating system (RAS) is a collection of nerve fibers that filter the sensory information to our brain. Without this system working efficiently, we would be mentally interrupted by every sensation around us. For example, have you ever had a tag on your clothes that just won't stop bugging you? Your RAS has not filtered the tactile sensation efficiently, so that you can ignore it.

Heather Hodgins-Chan and I met several years ago because I responded to a post she put on Facebook from On the Ball Pediatric Physio & Occupational Therapy. Today is part one of a two-part series with Jennifer Choi of Special Support Services in New York City. She discusses the untapped brilliance of students with Twice Exceptionalities and how they can be supported in the classroom. As a parent of a gifted student with writing challenges, Jenn hired an advocate who is now one of her business partners. They offer assistance to help parents have a voice in educational planning through IEP advocacy, role-playing and skill-building with students, and sharing information with the community. Yet, they remain affordable for single parents.

I also share my story of being denied support for my son, who is exceptional in math, yet is average in literacy. He does have several scores that lowered his overall IQ, which impacted his executive function skills. These barriers to self-direction interfered with a unique program that we trialed for him in 7th grade.

Seventeen years ago, Peggy Ployhar put her career on hold to help her autistic son. Three children later, she now owns a non-profit called SpEdHomeschool. The agency offers free resources for parents to educate their children, especially those with special needs. In this episode, Peggy shares why homeschooling her son changed his life and where he is today.

Her non-profit also offers a summer camp for families with special needs in Minnesota. They need volunteers, funds, and supplies. If God leads you to donate, thank you in advance for your time, supplies, or money.

Sarah Collins is an occupational therapist who is also homeschooling her children. Her journey began when she worked in home health and was helping a family who was homeschooling their children. She realized that she could do that too. After some time, she also realized that she could help this new community of homeschooled families that she was now part of. She trains OTs how to be sensitive to homeschool needs and parents about OT-related topics such as handwriting. We met because she reached out to me asking to do a presentation for her parent community. Then, we realized that we both live in Pennsylvania and are only about an hour apart. Today, she joins us to share her thoughts about how OT, handwriting, and homeschooling come together to support students.
