Can you really ask God to show you which ancestors need their temple work — and receive an answer? In this episode of Thinning of the Veil, host Tia Smith teaches the simple, practical pattern at the heart of the whole podcast, so that for Latter-day Saints (LDS), anyone with a willing heart can begin having their own thinning-of-the-veil experiences.
Tia lays out the pattern step by step: prepare through consistent temple worship, scripture study, and keeping your covenants; kneel and ask, in the name of Jesus Christ, to know who on the other side of the veil needs your help; then write down whatever comes — a name upon waking, a name in a dream, an impression, or a "sticky" thought you can't shake — and act on it by searching FamilySearch and completing the ordinances. She emphasizes the promise that must accompany the asking (a commitment to actually do the work), the counsel not to overthink or dismiss what comes ("I felt like I just made it up" is common), and the reassurance that experiences look different for everyone — some hear, some see, some simply feel. Drawing on President Nelson's invitation to help gather Israel on both sides of the veil, Elder Bednar's teaching on the spirit of Elijah, and the reminder that this work opens the heavens, she teaches that receiving names is less about worthiness or perfection than about desire, faith, and willingness to act.
She closes with her own first experience — the night in November 2012 when a name came to her in a dream — the tender beginning of how the Lord has spoken to her through this work ever since.
Q: Can I ask God who needs their temple work done? (LDS)
A: Tia teaches yes — prepare through temple worship and covenant-keeping, then ask in the name of Jesus Christ to know who needs help, promising to do the work, and record whatever name or impression comes.
Q: How do the names come?
A: In many ways — a name upon waking, in a dream, an impression, or a persistent thought. Tia counsels writing it down immediately and not dismissing it, even when it feels like you "made it up."
Q: Do I have to be perfect to have these experiences?
A: No. Tia teaches it's about desire, faith, and willingness to act on promptings — not perfection. God magnifies small, imperfect efforts far beyond our own ability.
A simple pattern, a willing heart — and the heavens open to help you gather.
