How do we find the Savior in our darkest seasons — through depression, grief, and the loss of someone we love? In this tender Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith sits down with Sister Reyna I. Aburto, former Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency and author of Reaching for the Savior, for an honest, hope-filled conversation about mental health, grief, and healing through Jesus Christ. A: Sister Reyna Aburto teaches that life is a sacred gift, and that mental and emotional illness should be treated with the same compassion as any physical illness. She testifies that we should never judge those who die by suicide or their families, because we cannot know their circumstances, and that the Savior extends mercy and understanding to all.

Q: How can we support someone struggling with depression or a mental health crisis?
A: Reyna shares the image of a storm cloud: those in the light often can't see how dark it is below, and those in the darkness can't see the light — so the answer is to fight the cloud together. She counsels turning to the Savior and the scriptures, reaching outward to serve others, being vulnerable, and seeking professional help, while believing and validating those who say they are hurting.

Q: How can temple and family history work help with grief and healing?
A: Reyna shares tender experiences of feeling close to those she serves in the temple, and the healing that came when her parents were finally sealed and she was sealed to them — releasing years of pain. She and Tia testify that as we do this work, the veil can thin and loved ones who have passed can minister to us.

Q: How do angels — on both sides of the veil — minister to us?
A: Reyna testifies that she has felt help from ancestors beyond the veil and from countless "angels" here in mortality — friends and strangers whose small acts of kindness changed her life. Does God really speak to children — and to ordinary mothers in the middle of everyday life? In this Mother's Day episode, host Tia Smith welcomes her friend Whitney and Whitney's 12-year-old son, Oliver, to share how learning to hear the Lord transformed their family, and how even a child can receive the names of ancestors waiting for their temple work.

Oliver describes the moment it happened: riding home from basketball practice, listening to the podcast, he asked his mom if he could receive names too — and minutes later a name came clearly to his mind. He wrote it down, they searched FamilySearch, and found the very person who needed all his temple work done. A tender witness that this mission belongs to the young as much as the old.

Whitney shares her own journey of intently seeking revelation — cutting out distractions, going to the temple weekly, and learning to recognize the Lord's voice — including a sacred experience in which her eyes were opened to ancestors filling her home and the Savior kneeling beside her with the assurance, "you're never really alone." She also shares how bearing testimony to ancestors during temple ordinances changed everything, and how she leads her children not by forcing testimony but by letting them walk through both the struggles and the miracles alongside her.

Running through it all: revelation is a skill that grows, the Savior wants to speak to us in many ways, and as we focus on others, God focuses on us.

Q: Can children receive revelation and find temple names?
A: Yes. In this episode a 12-year-old describes receiving names clearly and immediately after simply praying to ask if anyone needed their work done. Children who have been baptized and received the gift of the Holy Ghost can seek and receive personal revelation — often more readily than adults, because they don't doubt that it can happen.

Q: How can I learn to hear God's voice more clearly?
A: Whitney's approach was to remove distractions, spend consistent time in the scriptures and the temple, and — crucially — act on the promptings she received. She also prayed directly to be tutored on how the Lord speaks to her. Recognizing revelation is a skill that grows line upon line as you follow through.

Q: How do I teach my children to receive revelation?
A: Lead by example and let them be part of the journey. Have natural, ongoing conversations about God, share your own experiences (including your struggles, not just the outcomes), and let them witness the miracles in real time. Children absorb far more than we expect.

Q: What does bearing testimony to ancestors in the temple do?
A: Whitney describes silently bearing her testimony to each person as their ordinances were performed — and feeling their presence powerfully, something a temple worker independently noticed too. It shifts the focus from ourselves to those we're serving and can deepen the spirit of the work.

Stacie Dye,  had a revelatory experience in the temple where she felt like the ancestor that she was doing the work for, possibly had a sister. Not sure how to move forward, Colette decided to walk her though it on a live episode. In this video Colette goes through the process that begins with revelatory whisperings, to finding those who are lost and then taking them to the temple. Do you ever wonder whether you have a mission — a specific reason you were sent to earth right now? In this Mother's Day episode, host Tia Smith shares and reflects on Sister Wendy Nelson's powerful 2007 BYU Women's Conference message, "For Such a Time as This," about the divine mission of every woman of God (LDS) — whether or not she is a mother by birth.

Drawing on the story of Queen Esther, Sister Nelson teaches that we are here now because we agreed pre-mortally to accomplish specific assignments — and that our heartaches, challenges, and even our most discouraging trials are often exactly what prepare us with the "skill and understanding" the Lord needs us to have. Tia adds her own witness that seeking your mission will stretch you beyond your comfort zone, and that as covenant women we have real power to change the world on both sides of the veil.

This episode also opens with a tender reflection on the ministering of angels — the comfort of knowing that loved ones who pass on become part of our growing "army of angels," ministering to us from the other side.

Q: Does every woman really have a divine mission — even if she isn't a mother?
A: Yes. The teaching here is that every person was sent to earth to accomplish specific assignments agreed to pre-mortally, and that a woman fulfills her role regardless of whether she has children. Feeling restless or "underused" can be a sign the Spirit is nudging you toward more of what you came to do.

Q: How do I discover what my personal mission is?
A: Seek it through prayer, the scriptures, and the temple — consistently, not just once. Sometimes the mission is found right where the Lord has already placed you. Increasing obedience and consecrating your gifts to Him position you to recognize and fulfill it, line upon line.

Q: Why would God give me hard trials if He has a mission for me?
A: Because, as Sister Nelson teaches, some of the most heart-wrenching experiences are designed to prepare us with the very skills and understanding the Lord needs us to have. As we trust in His power and timing, we can come through our trials refined rather than consumed.

Q: What is the prophesied role of women in the last days?
A: President Spencer W. Kimball prophesied that much of the Church's latter-day growth will come as the good women of the world are drawn to the example of covenant women who reflect righteousness and are seen as "distinct and different in happy ways" from the women of the world.

Does the ministering of angels really happen in our darkest moments? In LDS (Latter-day Saint) scripture, Moroni testifies that angels are sent to "minister unto the children of men" — and this episode explores exactly what that looks like in real life.

What do Latter-day Saints teach about evil spirits — and how do we overcome them? This episode confronts a topic many avoid: the reality of Satan and his angels, and the power God has given us to withstand them. Anchored in the principle that there must be "opposition in all things" (2 Nephi 2:11), it teaches that thinning of the veil experiences from the light are matched by opposition from the dark — and that this is part of the plan, not cause for fear. Drawing on the three great scriptural patterns — Joseph Smith seized by darkness before the First Vision (Joseph Smith—History 1:15–17), Moses commanding "Depart hence, Satan" on the mount (Moses 1:12–22), and the Savior's own three temptations (JST Matthew 4) — this episode shows the same pattern each time: opposition, then, through priesthood power and calling on God, deliverance and revelation. It teaches the difference between unembodied, disembodied, and mortal agents of the adversary; what it means to be "sealed his" (Alma 34:35); the bounds and laws that limit evil spirits (Doctrine and Covenants 129; Joseph Smith); how to build a "fortress" through covenants (President Russell M. Nelson); and where the line falls between righteous seeking of the dead and forbidden "familiar spirits" (Isaiah 8:19; 2 Nephi 26:16). It closes with Heber C. Kimball's harrowing 1837 account of evil spirits in England, and Elder David A. Bednar's witness of the protecting power of temple covenants.

Q: What do Latter-day Saints believe about evil spirits and Satan?
A: Latter-day Saint doctrine teaches that Satan and the third of the hosts of heaven who followed him were cast out and denied bodies, and now oppose God's work and seek to lead people away from Christ (Doctrine and Covenants 29:36–37; Moses 4). But their power is bounded and limited by law (Doctrine and Covenants 129; Joseph Smith taught that "wicked spirits have their bounds, limits, and laws"), and the power of Jesus Christ always supersedes the power of the adversary.

Q: How do we overcome the influence of Satan, according to LDS teaching?
A: Through the power of Jesus Christ, accessed by covenants and priesthood power. This episode traces the same pattern in Joseph Smith, Moses, and the Savior Himself: opposition comes first, and deliverance follows as they call upon God and refuse to yield. President Russell M. Nelson taught that the way to "survive spiritually" is to let God prevail, learn to hear His voice, and use our energy to gather Israel — building a "fortress" of covenant strength that the adversary cannot penetrate.

Q: Is it wrong to seek to communicate with deceased loved ones?
A: There is a crucial distinction. Isaiah warns against seeking "familiar spirits" and wizards "that peep and mutter" (Isaiah 8:19) — meaning necromancy, mediums, and occult practices, which are forbidden. But Nephi clarifies that the living may righteously "hear from the dead" by seeking unto God (2 Nephi 18:19), through priesthood authority and the temple. The dead "whisper out of the dust" (2 Nephi 26:16) for one purpose: to turn hearts to the covenants and to Jesus Christ, that "the prisoners shall go free" (Doctrine and Covenants 128:22).

Q: How do temple covenants protect us from evil?
A: Elder David A. Bednar taught that there is a real difference between members who occasionally attend and those who "faithfully and consistently worship in the temple" — and that the ordinances and covenants of the house of the Lord carry protecting power, as promised in the Kirtland Temple dedicatory prayer (Doctrine and Covenants 109:24–26): "no weapon formed against them shall prosper." The devil despises the temple precisely because its protection stands as a great obstacle to his designs.

Can the love of God bring an entire family into the gospel — starting from the other side of the veil? In this BYU-Hawaii devotional (March 5, 2025), Professor Jihae Kwon shares how her Korean family came to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through a chain of miracles that began with three deaths and a birth. In 1972–74, Kwon's great-grandmother, grandfather, and father all died within two years of each other. Eight days after Jihae's birth, her father — who had never been religious — appeared in her mother's dream and told her about the resurrection. That Easter Sunday, her mother went to church for the first time. Months later, her Aunt Kihong walked into the Church and asked to be baptized. Then her grandfather — a staunch Buddhist who had once expelled his mother from the house for converting to Catholicism — appeared in another aunt's dream holding the Bible and declared, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church on earth." Within three years, five women in the family were baptized. What followed was decades of gathering: Aunt Kihong's patriarchal blessing mentioned genealogy work she didn't want to do — but a miraculous week-long research trip where she found every person, every house, and every name without addresses or phone numbers proved God was in the details. Jihae herself was laid off from her job and heard a clear impression: "Perfect — I can do genealogy." Six months, ~1,000 names per day, and one week after finishing, a job offer arrived. As of early 2024, more than 17,000 ordinances for her family's submitted names have been completed in temples around the world — more than 3,000 per day. Her witness: the love of God moves across the veil, across nations, and across generations to gather His children home.

Q: Can deceased family members appear in dreams to lead the living to the gospel?
A: Jihae Kwon's family experienced this repeatedly: her father appeared in her mother's dream eight days after his death and spoke of the resurrection — her mother attended church for the first time that Easter Sunday. Later, her grandfather, a lifelong Buddhist, appeared in an aunt's dream holding the Bible and declaring the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be the only true church. Within three years, five family members were baptized.

Q: How does God help with family history research?
A: In this devotional, Aunt Kihong traveled to Korea for genealogy research without addresses, phone numbers, or appointments — and found every person, every house, and every name she needed, including names of people who died as infants. Years later, Jihae was laid off from her job and heard a clear impression: "Perfect, I can do genealogy." She entered roughly 1,000 names per day for six months, and one week after finishing, received a job offer — "by divine intervention," she says.

Q: How fast is temple work being done worldwide?
A: As of early 2024, Jihae Kwon reported that more than 3,000 ordinances per day were being completed for her family's submitted names — in temples around the world — totaling more than 17,000 ordinances in less than a year. Her witness: "It's amazing, humbling, and terrifying at the same time to see how fast ordinances are done in temples all around the world."

Did the author of Roots hear his ancestors' voices — and did the Spirit of Elijah guide the most-watched television event in American history? In a 1993 BYU-Idaho devotional called "Family Histories," Elder J. Richard Clark — who oversaw the Church's family history department — shared what Alex Haley personally told him about the spiritual experiences behind the book that changed the world's relationship to genealogy. While researching Kunta Kinte's story aboard a freighter crossing the Atlantic, Haley forced himself into the ship's hold night after night, lying on a plank in the dark, listening to the sounds his ancestor must have heard. On the fourth night, overwhelmed by debt, eleven years of work, and near despair, he stood at the stern rail and heard voices urging him to step through into the sea. Then he heard other voices — conversational, familiar: "No, don't do that. You must finish. You must go on." He knew exactly who they were: Kunta Kinte, Belle, Chicken George, his grandmother — the ancestors he had been writing about. "From that night forward," Haley said, "I never had the misgivings or the tortures... I began to think that perhaps I was some kind of a conduit." When Clark later visited Haley at his Tennessee farm and suggested "an invisible hand" was guiding this work, Haley slammed his fist on his knee and said, "That's right. I felt the guiding hand of the Lord as I wrote my book." Roots became the bestselling book in U.S. publishing history, was translated into 30 languages, and reached an estimated 130 million television viewers. One year after its broadcast, in June 1978, the revelation extending the priesthood to all of God's children was announced. Elder David A. Bednar has taught that the Spirit of Elijah — "a manifestation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the divine nature of the family" — affects people inside and outside the Church. Alex Haley's story is one of its most powerful witnesses.

Q: Did Alex Haley have spiritual experiences while writing Roots?
A: Yes — Alex Haley personally told Elder J. Richard Clark that while aboard a freighter researching Kunta Kinte's story, he heard ancestral voices at a moment of near despair, urging him to finish the book. He described the experience as "almost like a religious experience" and said, "I think that it would be blasphemous for anyone to think he could write a thing like this without the help of the Lord."

Q: What is the Spirit of Elijah?
A: Elder Russell M. Nelson taught that the Spirit of Elijah is "a manifestation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the divine nature of the family." Elder David A. Bednar added that it affects people both inside and outside the Church — and that members have a covenant responsibility to search out their ancestors and provide saving ordinances for them. Alex Haley, who was not a Latter-day Saint, is one of the clearest examples of the Spirit of Elijah working upon someone outside the Church to turn the hearts of millions to their forebears.

Q: How did Roots affect family history research worldwide?
A: According to an article in the Congressional Quarterly cited by Elder Clark, Alex Haley's Roots "is the primary cause of the worldwide surge in interest in family history." The book sold six million copies, was translated into 30 languages, and the television miniseries reached 130 million viewers — the largest program audience in television history at the time. One year after the broadcast, the 1978 revelation extending the priesthood and temple blessings to all of God's children was announced — a timing Elder Clark called part of a "predetermined course" guided by "an invisible hand."

How did a people who survived the largest massacre of Native Americans in U.S. history come to be baptized — in the same river where it happened — through dreams and visions from the other side of the veil? Darren Parry, sixth-generation Shoshone Latter-day Saint, former tribal chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, and direct descendant of Chief Sagwich, shares the conversion story of his people. On January 29, 1863, more than 450 Shoshone men, women, and children were massacred by the U.S. Army at the Bear River. Ten years later, Chief Sagwich began having dreams: three men appeared and told him of a God among the Mormon people and that he was to send for missionaries. He went three days in a row to the home of George Washington Hill, a former missionary who spoke fluent Shoshone, asking him to come teach. Three times George said no — there is order in the Lord's church. On the fourth day, George received a telegram from Brigham Young summoning him to Salt Lake City: "George, I have a heavy burden on my shoulders, and that burden is now going to be yours. I am calling you to be a missionary again to the Shoshone people." When George returned home, Sagwich was sitting on his porch. George promised to come, but said it would take time. That night George's train derailed and he was sent home — instead, he jumped a freight train north. The next morning, walking toward the Shoshone camp without knowing the exact location, he saw a man riding toward him leading a second horse. It was Sagwich, who said: "I had another dream last night. The Great Spirit said you would be coming this morning. I am here to pick you up." George's journal records: "After eating the best breakfast that ever was, I commenced to teaching them the gospel of Christ. And three hours later, I baptized 102 Shoshone's in the Bear River." The same river. Ten years after the massacre. Most of those baptized were survivors. Darren also shares how Sagwich and his people helped build the Logan Temple — on a hill the Shoshone had considered sacred healing ground long before the temple was announced — and how a temple ledger found in a basement room contained 80 Shoshone names with the death date January 29, 1863: Sagwich had done their temple work himself. The episode closes with a miracle in the Logan Temple archive: a book, already open to the exact page, with the exact name Darren's great-grandmother and grandmother had come searching for. Q: How were the Shoshone people converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
A: Ten years after the Bear River Massacre of 1863, Chief Sagwich began having dreams in which three men appeared and told him of a God among the Mormon people and that he was to send for missionaries. After Sagwich visited George Washington Hill three days in a row — and was turned away each time — Brigham Young, without knowing of Sagwich's visits, sent George a telegram calling him on a mission to the Shoshone. On the morning George arrived, Sagwich was already riding toward him with a second horse, having dreamed the night before that George would be coming. Three hours after their meeting, George baptized 102 Shoshone in the Bear River — the same river where the massacre had occurred.

Q: Did Chief Sagwich help build the Logan Temple?
A: Yes — Sagwich and men from the Shoshone community of Washakie were among the largest groups to donate labor to the building of the Logan Temple, carrying rocks and mortar. The temple sits on a hill the Shoshone had considered sacred healing ground long before the Church announced its construction. Sagwich later performed temple work for his people in that same temple, including work for at least 80 individuals who died in the 1863 massacre — their names preserved in a ledger discovered in a basement room of the Logan Temple.

Q: What miracle happened in the Logan Temple archive?
A: Darren Parry's great-grandmother Amy Hoo Chu Timbimboo and his grandmother went to the Logan Temple to search for a name in the archive — a room filled with books floor to ceiling. The temple recorder told them he didn't know where to begin. But one book was already open on the table, turned to a page containing the exact name they had come to find. As Darren tells it: "Somebody had opened that book for them and left it there so they could find it."
