In this chapter, we learn about how the church spread to other regions, such as Judea and Samaria, due to the intense persecution they faced after Stephen's death. Saul, who later became known as Paul, was the primary persecutor of the church and had supported Stephen's death.
One of the disciples who fled to other areas was Philip. He went to Samaria to preach the Good News, and many people believed in his message. Among those who came to faith was a former sorcerer named Simon. Although he was baptized, he, along with the others who believed, had not yet received the Holy Spirit. During this time, the apostles remained in Jerusalem. When they heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they traveled there. The apostles laid their hands on the Samaritans, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Simon witnessed the power of God at work through the apostles and offered them money in an attempt to obtain this authority for himself.
We must be cautious of those who claim to have received Jesus but do not live according to His teachings. Simon, well-known among his people, hoped to regain fame through the great power of God, the Holy Spirit.
Let us examine our hearts and ask ourselves if we genuinely believe in Jesus and aim to live by His word, or if we have accepted Him merely to secure our place in heaven. It is essential to live a life that abides in His Spirit and to follow His teachings.
I encourage you to reflect on your motivations for following Jesus. Are you following Him for the benefits, or do you truly believe that His teachings are the path to true life.
