Welcome back to MJ English. Today, um, we're going to be looking into something, uh, you might have noticed when watching movies or TV shows in English.

And that is that sometimes it sounds like native speakers are talking so fast that they're skipping over words or even like swallowing them.

那就是，有時候聽起來像是母語人士講話太快，會跳過一些單字，甚至像是「吞字」。

Yeah, definitely. You hear that all the time.

對啊，這真的超常聽到的。

Yeah. And and it it can be difficult for English learners to keep up with.

是啊，對英文學習者來說要跟上節奏真的不容易。

It is.

沒錯。

So, today we're going to take a deep dive into this and um really try to figure out what's going on.

所以今天我們要來深入聊聊這個話題，搞清楚到底發生什麼事。

So, What exactly is happening when it sounds like English speakers are like eating their words?

那到底為什麼聽起來像是英文母語者「吃字」呢？

Well, it's not that they're actually like skipping words or anything. It's just that they're using something called reductions or contractions.

其實他們並不是把字省略掉，而是用了所謂的「縮略語」（reductions）或「縮寫」（contractions）。

Okay. Reductions, contractions.

好喔，縮略語、縮寫。

Yeah. And it's basically just a way of making spoken English more efficient and casual.

對，簡單來說就是讓口語英文更有效率、更口語化的方法。

So, like a shortcut.

所以就像是語言的捷徑。

Exactly. Like a shortcut. And actually, it's quite similar to what we do in Chinese when we speak quickly sometimes.

沒錯，像是語言的快速通道。其實這跟中文在講話很快時也會連音很像。

Oh, that's interesting. Can Can you give us an example?

哦，好有趣。可以舉個例子嗎？

Yeah, sure. So, um in English, one of the most Common reductions is wanna, which is a shortened form of want to.

當然可以。例如英文裡最常見的縮略語之一就是「wanna」，它是「want to」的縮寫。

Exactly. And it sounds much more natural and relaxed, especially in casual conversations.

沒錯，聽起來就會更自然、更輕鬆，特別是在比較隨意的對話中。

Okay, that makes sense. So So wanna is like the casual way to say want to, right? You'll hear it all the time in movies, TV shows, songs, you name it.

了解，所以「wanna」就是「want to」的口語版本對吧？在電影、影集、歌曲裡超常出現。

But I guess in more formal situations, it's better to use the full want to.

但如果是比較正式的場合，就要用完整的「want to」。

Yeah, exactly. Like if you were talking to your boss or teacher or giving a presentation, you'd probably want to use the full form to sound more professional.

對，沒錯。如果你在跟老闆、老師講話，或是做簡報，就應該用完整的「want to」聽起來才會比較專業。

So wanna is one reduction. What are some other common ones?

那除了 wanna，還有其他常見的縮略語嗎？

Well, another really common one is gonna, which is short for going to.

另一個非常常見的就是「gonna」，它是「going to」的縮略形式。

And it's used to talk about future plans or intentions.

這個通常用來講未來的計畫或打算。

So like instead of saying I'm going to go to the 7-Eleven, you could say I'm gonna go to the 7-Eleven.

所以你可以把「I'm going to go to the 7-Eleven」說成「I'm gonna go to the 7-Eleven」。

Exactly. And gonna, it sounds much more casual and natural.

沒錯，聽起來更自然、更口語化。

So if I'm telling my friend, I'm gonna play video games later. That's okay.

所以我跟朋友說「I'm gonna play video games later.」是沒問題的對吧？

Absolutely. It sounds perfect for that kind of casual conversation.

完全沒問題，這樣的對話非常自然。

But if I'm like writing an email to my professor, I should probably use the full going to.

但如果我是在寫信給教授，就應該用完整的「going to」？

Yeah. I'd say so. It's always better to err on the side of formality in writing, especially when you're communicating with someone in a position of authority.

對，建議正式寫作時還是用正式語法，特別是對像老師或主管這種位階高的人。

Are there any other big ones we should know?

還有其他重要的縮略語我們應該知道的嗎？

Yeah, definitely. Gotta is another really common reduction.

當然，「gotta」也是另一個非常常見的縮略語。

Gotta.

Gotta。

Yeah. Which is short for got to or have to. And it's used to express obligation or necessity.

對，它是「got to」或「have to」的縮寫，通常用來表達「必須」或「一定要做」的事情。

So like I gotta finish my homework.

像是「I gotta finish my homework.（我得把作業做完）」。

Exactly. Or I gotta catch the bus.

沒錯，或是「I gotta catch the bus.（我得趕上公車）」。

Okay. So it sounds like all of these reductions—wanna, gonna, gotta—they're all used to make spoken English sound more casual and natural.

原來這些縮略語——wanna、gonna、gotta——都是讓口說英文聽起來更自然、更口語化的方式。

That's exactly right. They're kind of like the verbal equivalent of wearing jeans and a T-shirt instead of a suit and tie.

完全正確。這些縮略語就像你平常穿牛仔褲和T恤，而不是西裝打領帶一樣的語言風格。

I like that analogy.

我喜歡這個比喻。

And just like you wouldn't wear a suit and tie to a casual hangout with friends, you wouldn't use these reductions in a formal setting like a job interview or a presentation.

就像你不會穿西裝去跟朋友閒聊一樣，你在面試或簡報這種正式場合也不會用這些縮略語。

So, it's all about knowing when to use them.

所以重點是知道什麼時候該用，什麼時候不該用。

Exactly. It's about choosing the right level of formality for the situation.

沒錯，就是根據場合選擇適當的正式程度。

Well, this has been really helpful. I think I'm starting to understand these reductions a lot better now.
