Often hopelessly bleak and one-dimensional, Tika Sumpter and Thai Randolph grew tired of the depictions of Black mothers in the media. Thus the birth of SugaBerry - a platform that provides content, commerce, and, most importantly, community to Black women and mothers. They have since then been on a mission to empower and transform the narrative of Black women through SugaBerry and The Suga Podcast.
In this episode, Tika and Thai join Ronne as they share their endeavors as founders of SugaBerry and hosts of The Suga Podcast. Tune in as Tika and Thai bring us along on the highs and lows of their entrepreneurial journey and share the lessons learned from building a business from the ground up. Ronne, Tika, and Thai also chat about getting your hands dirty in entrepreneurship, finding balance as a businesswoman, as well as dealing with fears, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome when running a business.
KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS:
QUOTABLES:
“We sometimes dismiss the care that we actually need, or just are so busy fighting that eventually our health and things like that can break down. So I think it's really important to have communities like this and businesses like this that are catering to women who are always extending themselves to others.”
“The only point here is to make black women feel supported and cared for. There's enough outside of us that we all have to combat on a day-to-day basis. We don't have to do that within.”
“Rejection is going to happen to everybody, it just is, including people who you see on TV, rejection happens every day, including CEOs, including all of us. But what is the passion behind it? And what are you doing to implement the plans that you create?”
