[Content Warning]: Suicide Attempts, Interpersonal Violence, Rape, Institutional Abuse, Threats of Violence, Exploitation of a Minor, Attempted Trafficking.
In our last two episodes with Cheryl Hall, Cheryl tells us her daughterโs harrowing story of abuse, rape, attempted trafficking, and suicide attempts. Jan and Cheryl spoke about how social media impacts teens and the challenges of monitoring their online behavior as well as what airports are doing to prevent human trafficking. In this episode, Jan and Cheryl focus on issues that were not previously discussed;ย including the lack of sufficient and suitable mental health facilities for teens, what enthusiastic consent is and how we can teach it to our children, and the negative impact of purity culture, particularly on children who are neurodivergent. They emphasize the importance of creating safe communication channels between you and your child and your child and authority figures. Jan and Cheryl discuss purity culture, the patriarchy, and vertical morality, and their consequences on individuals' mental health and self-perception. They explore the importance of horizontal morality and personal autonomy, as well as the abuse of power in religious institutions. The concept of enthusiastic consent is stressed as a crucial aspect of healthy relationships. The conversation also emphasizes the need for accessible and trauma-informed mental health care, as well as addressing bullying and abuse in educational settings. The overall theme is protecting survivors and advocating for their well-being. To end their conversation, Jan and Cheryl explore the importance of support systems and community in the recovery process, as well as the need to empower survivors and raise awareness for prevention.

Today, Jan is joined by Kerry Jenkins, a Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) in Florida who graduated from Nova Southeastern University in 2000 and received her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska in 2007. Kerry discovered Functional/Integrative medicine when a family member began having chronic digestive concerns. She quickly realized that this was the type of medicine that she would be excited to practice! Kerry was certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine.ย Kerry believes every patient has a story and through story sharing we gather details to map out the history and implement a plan for true healing. Her practice, Whisper Health, was created to offer patients a more holistic approach to healing/managing their chronic conditions
In todayโs conversation, Jan and Kerry talk about the link between trauma and health. They discuss the importance of having a clinician who actively listens and validates patients at the initial step in the healing process. Kerry explains the impact of trauma on the mind, body, and spirit and shares insights into how she creates a healing plan with patients. The conversation stresses the significance of creating a holistic healing approach; advocating for the inclusion of other clinicians in the healing plan. Kerry explains how accessing the vagus nerve through simple techniques can promote relaxation and healing.ย Lastly, she introduces her upcoming program, the Get Your Sass Back Program, which focuses on empowering women with polycystic ovarian syndrome to reclaim their health.

We are starting a new series called โWord of the Month.โ In this series Jan will pick one word for each month to focus on as a way to grow and challenge herself and her listeners. This month Jan is focusing on fearlessness. In this episode she openly discusses her own fear that stemmed from the brainwashing and sexual abuse she experienced as a tween/teen.ย She emphasizes that fearlessness does not mean eliminating all fear from our lives, but rather shifting our relationship with fear and learning to navigate it more effectively. Jan shares personal experiences and challenges listeners to practice fearlessness in various aspects of their lives, such as sharing their stories, standing up for themselves, and speaking out against injustice. She encourages listeners to cultivate courage, hope, and authenticity, and to choose hope over fear. In closing, Jan highlights the importance of living in the present moment and letting go of guilt and shame.
If you're on a journey to embrace fearlessness and want to share your experience with us, please send an email to [email protected]. Your story could be featured anonymously on an upcoming episode of our "Word of the Month" podcast.

Why It Matters?ย
Trauma narratives are often fragmented, sensationalized, or oversimplified. Survivors are either ignored or reduced to their worst moments. Trauma Interrupted reframes trauma as a human experience, not an identity, and recovery as a collective responsibility, not an individual burden.ย
