It’s been a bittersweet week for us as we say goodbye (or better yet, see you again soon) to Tasmania, and hit the road, making our way north back to Queensland. 4 days, 12 hours sailing the Bass Strait on Spirit of Tasmania and 2500km, we have found ourselves back on the Gold Coast, revelling in Queensland’s warmer winter weather and reconnecting with family. 

Prior to leaving Tassie we invested in some upgrades to the van and Hilux, including all the gear to take our free camping to a new level!

This week we discuss 3 of Tasmania’s best FREE experiences that are not found on the usual tourist maps and were recommended to us by locals!  

We had a brilliant time exploring Hobart’s rich history with a self-guided walking tour through Sullivans Cove and its surrounds. A great way to combine exercise and education, and discover many of Hobart’s pioneering and convict settlement stories. The Hobart Heritage Pod Walk is a must do! Visit www.heritage.tas.gov.au to download the digital map and audioguide to this awesome experience.

We also reminisce about our stay on the Tasman Peninsula, and our visit to the world heritage listed Coal Mines Historic Site. Just 15 minutes down the road from the famous Port Arthur, the ruins are incredible and tell the story of the convicts  and officials who were housed here between 1833-1848. 

 Also located on the Tasman Peninsula is a fascinating naturally occurring phenomenon called the Tessellated Pavement. This geological rarity is found in only a few places around the world, and is a natural wonder worth exploring! 

And whilst not a free experience, we also talk about our visit to Unzoo located on the Tasman Peninsula. An unconventional take on a traditional zoo, Unzoo is a sanctuary for Australian native wildlife including Tassie’s endangered Tasmanian Devil.

This week we go deep, discussing the privilege of travel and what a blessing it is to experience other countries and cultures. With the current global crisis and borders closed to international travel, now is the perfect time to explore your own backyard. We are filled with excited anticipation to hit the road again in Tasmania, and re-commence our travels around this incredible state. 

 We’ve seen some restrictions ease this week in Tassie, with National Parks and green spaces reopening for exercise within a 30km radius of your residential location. For us, that meant we were able to hike the beautiful Snug Falls, a 4km round trip walk to a spectacular waterfall. 

We were so grateful to breathe the fresh, crisp air, be amongst nature and count our blessing!

Week 6 in lockdown and we are focusing on getting stuff done and ticking off our long list of “to do’s” within the van. This week we have installed two much needed smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector, off the back of some great advice from a friend within the Tasmanian Fire Service. 

 We are continuing to keep our mindsets positive with daily exercise and some more caravan cooking! Paul whips up a delicious and easy Tassie Chunky Apple Crumble that was warming and nourishing for our both our souls and waistlines! 

And our Feel Good Throwback features our first off-road adventure with the new Toyota Hilux last year, when we spent the day exploring the incredible Rainbow Beach and Coloured Sands in South East Queensland. Keep dreaming and making those bucket lists of the places you want to visit when restrictions are lifted and life gets a little more normal! We are!
