This week we hit the dunes for an awesome day of 4WD training and epic beach driving in the incredible Byfield National Park. We have wanted to explore this National Park for a long time, and were thrilled to have the opportunity to jump on a day trek with Tony from Rockhampton Tours.

Byfield National Park covers over 15,000ha and is made up of massive parabolic sand dunes in the south, and rugged mountain pinnacles in the north. Many areas, such as the iconic Five Rocks, and Nine Mile Beach are only accessible by 4WD and provide breathtaking views of the spectacular Capricorn Coast.

After a long week of having the van fixed in Emerald, we hit the road and travel east to Rockhampton as Paul needs to fly home to the Gold Coast for a special family event. 

It’s the first time any of us have travelled solo since setting off on our full time adventures 14 months ago, and the first time for air travel during Covid. Despite only spending a weekend apart, we are feeling mixed emotions about it all and the new world we are all living. 

Plus, we have been marvelling at the incredible growth in Jasper over the last week as he continues to thrive on the road in what we have coined Australia’s ‘living classroom’. This week’s episode is packed with raw emotion and is full of philosophy.

This week we have an unexpected extended stay in Emerald as we are challenged with some ongoing wiring issues in the van that are having knock on effects with the solar, batteries and 12 volt system. 

We turn our frustrations into a positive and take some time out in nature to explore Blackdown Tableland National Park. Located between Emerald and Rockhampton in Queensland’s Central Highlands, this really is a hidden gem and boasts an incredible plateau, sandstone gorges, crystal clear waterholes and the beautiful Rainbow Falls waterfall.  

We’re keeping our fingers crossed the van will get sorted in the coming days so we can hit the road and continue our journey north to the Tropics!

This week we journey from the Outback to the Ocean, saying goodbye to Winton and travelling 600km to Emerald, in Queensland’s Central Highlands.

We overnight in the sleepy town of Alpha, famous for its fossilised wood, and set up camp for a week at one of our favourite spots just south of Emerald, Lake Maraboon. 

We spend days visiting the nearby Sapphire Gemfields, immersing ourselves in the history and culture of the area, exploring underground mines and trying our hand at fossicking for precious and beautiful gemstones! Will we find the big one?

This week we continue our dinosaur discovery with a visit to the world’s only Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry! Home to over 3000 fossilised footprints of Australian dinosaurs, the Stampede was first discovered in the 1960’s and is a fascinating display of life over 95 million years ago! 

With it’s incredibly epic landscapes and sweeping views across wild and rugged plains, Winton has no shortage of vantage spots to take in the spectacular Outback sunsets, and exploring the unique environment of the Rangelands was a perfect way to lose ourselves for an afternoon. 

Plus Paul gets the opportunity to have a yarn to some of the true Aussie characters that make Winton such a vibrant Outback town including an Opal miner, the Crackup Sisters, and the founder of The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival.

Welcome to Winton, Way Out West in Outback Queensland. This week we immerse ourselves in the rich history of the region with a visit to the Waltzing Matilda Centre, a world class museum dedicated to Australia’s unofficial anthem written by A B (Banjo) Patterson in 1895.

We step back in time 95 million years to discover the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, an incredible museum home to the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world. The museum is split between three facilities, the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, Collection Room and Dinosaur Canyon. 

And Jasper keeps us entertained at the quirky Musical Fence before we all enjoy the vision splendid of another incredible Outback sunset. 

There is so much to see and do in Winton, we may need to extend our stay!

This week we hit the road with our new van in tow and travel West 750km from the Fraser Coast to Charleville, gateway to Outback Queensland!  

We say goodbye to the cool blue of the coast, and hello to the red dirt and 30 degree temperatures! We spend an overnight at the Miles Showground and marvel at Roma’s largest 100 year old bottle tree, before travelling on to Mitchell where we soaked the afternoon away in the mineral rich waters of an artesian basin spring.
