From the time he was paroled from the Michigan City prison in May, 1933, to the time he was gunned down by police on a Chicago sidewalk 14 months later, John Herbert Dillinger was one of America's most notorious scoundrels.

In chapter one, we looked at the escape of ten convicts from the Indiana penitentiary at Michigan City and the subsequent delivery of Dillinger from the Lima, Ohio, jail that led to the death of Sheriff Jesse Sarber. In Chapter Two, Dillinger and his new gang blazed a trail of terror across the Midwest.

Now, the wanted desperados have made their way to Tuscon, Arizona, to escape the heat of Chicago, but a hotel fire spells the beginning of the end for most of the outlaw gang.

True crime history is not just about reviving the stories of America's scandals, scoundrels and scourges, but also about exploring the history of true crime as a genre.

Although he became better known late in his career for his books on travel and on Japanese legends and ghost stories, Lafcadio Hearn began his professional writing career as a staff correspondent for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was such a devotee of Edgar Allen Poe that he carried the nickname, The Raven, given to him by an early mentor, throughout his life. The devotion shows in much of his writing, including this account of a tanyard murder in 1874.

Even though the author was visually impaired, Hearn's account of this ghastly crime contains graphic details of the discovery of the body and the autopsy, so if you are sensitive to such things, you might want to fast forward through that part.

The tanyard was situated next to a soap factory that had caught fire the previous night and attracted a crowd of 50,000, the newspapers said, to watch the massive flames. Such was the mood of the city that Hearn begins his report with a quote from William Shakespeare's tragic Hamlet.

Edmund Pearson was an early pioneer in true crime writing. A librarian by trade, he came to prominence as an author through his essay on the Lizzie Borden case included in his 1924 book, Studies in Murder. In 1928, Pearson wrote a series of weekly columns for The St. Louis Post Dispatch. "The Embarrassments of Mr. Udderzook" is the first article in that series, a wry, often sarcastic look at a case of two murders wrapped around an insurance fraud and stuffed inside a case of arson that came to light in February, 1872.

Aberdeen, Washington

February, 1910

During the last half of the first decade of the twentieth century, the port of Grays Harbor near the city of Aberdeen Washington, was so inundated with dead bodies that the local newspapers called it the invasion of the floater fleet. Numerous investigations did not turn up anything except a few likely suspects and even more mystery. When police arrested the local union agent Billy Gohl for the murder of a pair of sailors, they believed they caught the man behind anywhere from 40 to 200 murders between 1906 and 1910.

In this first volume of "The Gangster Chronicles," we will follow the trail of terror blazed by one of America's most famous, perhaps most beloved, gangsters, John Dillinger. From the time he was paroled from the Michigan City prison in May, 1933, to the time he was gunned down by police on a Chicago sidewalk in front of the Biograph Theater 14 months later, John Herbert Dillinger was one of America's most notorious scoundrels. Chapter One will detail some of Dillinger's earliest known robberies and his murderous escape from the Lima jail. We plan to tell the Dillinger saga in five chapters. After this first one, you can expect a new installment at 7 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month. We're considering the options for Volume 2 and are welcome to suggestions.
