The criticism isn't coming from cable news pundits or political opponents. It's coming from inside the house.
Nearly four weeks after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson home, the sheriff leading the investigation is facing public accusations from his own former command staff. Richard Kastigar, a 46-year department veteran and former Chief Deputy, says Sheriff Chris Nanos has "great disdain" for the FBI stemming from a decade-old investigation—and that Nanos is "still pissed" about it. Richard Carmona, another former Chief Deputy, told reporters he's "disappointed at the level or lack of leadership."
The president of the deputies' union put it more bluntly: "It is a common belief in this agency that this case has become an ego case for Sheriff Nanos."
Nanos disputes everything. He says the FBI relationship is strong. He says the evidence decisions were about lab consistency. He says the criticism is political noise.
But actions speak. The crime scene was released too early—he admitted it. DNA went to a private lab, not Quantico, and now faces "challenges" that could take months. A search helicopter pilot was reportedly reassigned during the active investigation. And the sheriff told reporters: "I'm not used to everyone hanging onto my every word and then holding me accountable."
An 84-year-old woman remains missing. Her family just offered a $1 million reward—more than three weeks after they reportedly wanted to announce it. And the man running the investigation says everyone questioning him is the problem.

Whoever is responsible for Nancy Guthrie's disappearance is sitting on a decision that will shape the rest of their life.
The evidence released so far doesn't suggest a mastermind. It suggests someone who cased the house, came back, and got surprised by a doorbell camera they didn't know existed. Someone who improvised with plants from a pot to cover the lens. Someone who may not have intended for an 84-year-old woman to die—but is now three and a half weeks into hiding the result.
Eric Faddis was a felony prosecutor. Now he's a criminal defense attorney. He's seen what happens on both sides when cases like this finally land in a courtroom.
Arizona's felony murder statute doesn't require intent to kill. If Nancy Guthrie died during a burglary, that's a murder charge. Add body concealment, evidence tampering, and weeks of flight, and the legal exposure is already catastrophic.
But there's still a fork in the road.
Faddis explains what walking into a police station with a lawyer and the location of the body actually buys—versus getting caught cold through genetic genealogy or a tip. One scenario gives the defense leverage for negotiation. The other lets prosecutors paint a portrait of someone who hid, lied, and let a family suffer while they calculated their odds.
The hardest part: without the body, neither side can prove how Nancy died. The defense can't establish it was accidental. Prosecutors can't establish it wasn't. And the person who created that evidentiary black hole is the one who hid her.
Faddis gives the honest answer on what the range of outcomes looks like now—and how fast that range is narrowing.

Breaking developments in the Anna Kepner case: her sixteen-year-old stepbrother has been charged with federal homicide, according to custody court filings that exposed what the FBI won't confirm.
The February 20th emergency petition filed by the suspect's biological father reveals the teenager was charged on February 3rd, 2026, by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. He appeared in sealed federal court on February 6th, was processed for pretrial release, and returned to guardian custody in Brooksville.
Anna Kepner, eighteen, was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon on November 7th, 2025. She was discovered under a bed in her stateroom — asphyxiated by what her family says was a bar hold restraint. She shared that cabin with her stepbrother and her fourteen-year-old biological brother. The adults slept across the hall.
The federal case remains sealed. But the custody battle between the suspect's divorced parents has become the only source of public information. His father is funding his defense. His mother — married to Anna's father — wants accountability. The family expelled the teenager immediately after docking. Neither has seen him since.
Today we examine the charges, the legal pathway to adult prosecution, and whether this sealed case will ever see daylight.

Day four of the Kouri Richins murder trial brought the witness prosecutors have been building toward since the case began. Carmen Lauber, Kouri Richins' former housekeeper, testified under immunity that she purchased illicit drugs for Kouri four times in the weeks surrounding Eric Richins' death in March 2022.
According to Lauber's testimony, the requests started with pain pills allegedly meant for an investor and escalated to fentanyl. Lauber says she told Kouri the pills were fentanyl and that Kouri told her to go ahead and get them. Cash was left in a house Kouri was flipping. Pills were dropped in a firepit. The system, as Lauber described it, was designed to keep Kouri at a distance from every handoff.
The most damaging testimony may have been what allegedly happened after Eric died. According to phone records displayed in court, Kouri texted Lauber three days after her husband's death asking if she still had her connection. She paid for the purchase with a check disguised as a cleaning payment. And when Lauber says she confronted Kouri about whether the pills had been for Eric, Kouri allegedly told her he died from a brain aneurysm.
The defense landed significant blows on cross. Lauber tested positive for meth throughout the period of the alleged deals, initially told investigators Kouri asked for oxycodone rather than fentanyl, and confirmed that a recorded meeting with investigators included the instruction to provide details that would ensure a conviction. Her drug source, Robert Crozier, has also changed his account of what he sold her.
Earlier in the day, toxicology testimony confirmed five times the lethal dose of illicit fentanyl in Eric's blood. No hydrocodone was detected. The jury also heard about phones belonging to Kouri's alleged boyfriend that were initially reported broken but later became operable and were processed by the FBI.
Kouri Richins has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is presumed innocent. Cross-examination continues Friday.

Prosecutors say Kouri Richins murdered her husband Eric with a fentanyl-laced Moscow mule. But those copper mugs were never tested for fentanyl. The nanny washed them the next morning.
That's the kind of evidentiary gap that's emerging in week one of this Utah murder trial—and defense attorney Eric Faddis explains why it matters.
The crime scene wasn't properly secured. The kitchen where the drinks were made wasn't searched. White specks on Eric's nightstand—visible in photos—were never analyzed. The medical examiner testified the manner of death is still "undetermined" on the death certificate. Chelsea Gipson, the crime scene tech, found no drugs on her initial visit, but investigators kept searching the home over four years, finding more evidence each time.
The defense is building a case around what wasn't done, what wasn't tested, and what can't be proven. Faddis, who has worked as both prosecutor and defense attorney, breaks down why circumstantial evidence—even overwhelming circumstantial evidence—might not be enough when the physical proof is missing.
Can the prosecution's motive evidence survive these investigative failures?
