Harry Lidsky, Digital Forensic Examiner, took the stand in the murder trial of Brendan Banfield, the former IRS agent charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors allege Banfield and the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, lured Ryan to their Herndon home through a fetish website and staged the killings as a home invasion.
The defense argues digital forensics contradict the catfishing theory and that investigators who disagreed were reassigned. Banfield faces life without parole if convicted. The four-week trial continues in Fairfax County.

Aaron Spencer killed Michael Fosler. That's not in dispute. The question is whether it was murder or the lawful defense of a child. Spencer faces second-degree murder—purposeful killing without premeditation under Arkansas law. His defense is that he saved his 14-year-old daughter from a man charged with raping her, a man out on bond with 43 counts pending, a man who had no legal reason to be anywhere near that child.
The prosecution has ammunition. Rule 404(b) evidence shows Spencer allegedly made statements three months before the shooting about what he'd do if Fosler came near his daughter again. That's their premeditation angle. The defense has to counter that while arguing Spencer acted reasonably when he found his missing daughter in her alleged rapist's vehicle at 1 a.m.
Defense attorney Bob Motta joins True Crime Today to break down how defense-of-others claims work in practice, what the jury needs to hear, and whether "you should have called 911" is a viable prosecution argument when a child is in immediate danger. We examine how to use Fosler's criminal history without creating a vigilante narrative, how Spencer's prior statements can be contextualized, and what the political elements—Spencer running for sheriff against someone who worked with the removed judge—mean for trial strategy.

Three women. Three abductions. Same beliefs. Same geography. Same church.
Elleshia Seymour is now in Croatian custody after allegedly fleeing Utah with her four children because she believed the apocalypse was coming. She left behind a to-do list instructing herself to shred documents and buy a burner phone. She left a note she described as a "message from God." And she left a secret TikTok account filled with videos warning that Salt Lake City would be destroyed and COVID vaccines were turning people into zombies.
Her children — ages 11, 8, 7, and 3 — are now trapped in a state-run orphanage in Dubrovnik. Their father is there. He can see them two hours a day. The three-year-old doesn't understand why he can't go home.
This case would be disturbing enough on its own. But Elleshia Seymour isn't an anomaly. She's a pattern.
Lori Vallow believed the same things. Her children J.J. and Tylee were murdered — their bodies found in her boyfriend Chad Daybell's backyard. Spring Thibaudeau believed the same things. She fled toward Canada with her teenage son before the FBI caught her.
All three women came from LDS backgrounds. All three developed apocalyptic beliefs centered on the same theology — the same "end times" doctrine the Church teaches as mainstream. All three left children traumatized or dead.
The LDS Church is worth an estimated $265 billion. It was fined by the SEC for hiding its wealth. It excommunicated Chad Daybell — but only after the murders. It excommunicated Julie Rowe — but only after years of influence.
This is the story of a radicalization pipeline that keeps producing victims — and an institution that keeps looking the other way.

The Arkansas Supreme Court removed Judge Barbara Elmore from Aaron Spencer's murder case after finding constitutional violations for the second time in seven months. The May reversal called her gag order a "plain, manifest, clear, and gross abuse of discretion." The January removal came after she limited trial attendance to 55 people, banned cameras, and provided no overflow viewing. Three justices wanted her gone in May. Now the full court agreed.
Aaron Spencer is the Lonoke County father who killed Michael Fosler—the man out on $5,000 bond for allegedly raping Spencer's 14-year-old daughter. Fosler faced 43 counts including sexual assault, internet stalking of a child, and child pornography possession. He should never have been near that child. Instead, she vanished from her bedroom after midnight and ended up in his vehicle. Spencer tracked them, rammed Fosler's truck off the road, and a confrontation ended in Fosler's death.
Defense attorney Bob Motta joins True Crime Today to explain what it takes for a state supreme court to remove a sitting judge, what the Writ of Certiorari means for prior rulings, and why Judge Elmore's history with Fosler's original case matters. We examine the retired judge now taking over, the fourteen legislators who raised fair trial concerns, and what the defense should be pushing for with fresh judicial eyes on this case.

This is the moment the Ellen Greenberg case shifted. After 15 years of fighting the city of Philadelphia, after settlements, documentaries, and a medical examiner who reversed his own ruling, Josh and Sandee Greenberg are now asking Sam Goldberg directly: help us understand what happened to our daughter.
It's not a demand. It's not an accusation. It's an invitation — and that makes it even more powerful.
"We would like to invite Sam and his family members to come forward and explain to us things that have not been answered," Sandee Greenberg told NewsNation. "I would think he would want to know exactly what happened to his beloved fiancée."
Sam Goldberg has never been charged with any crime. But he's also never sat for an interview, never answered questions publicly, and his family collectively refused to participate in the Death in Apartment 603 documentary. When reporters approached him last week after news of the federal investigation broke, he remained "tight-lipped and refused to answer questions."
Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has issued subpoenas to Philadelphia Police, the DA's Office, and the Medical Examiner's Office. They're investigating whether corruption influenced how this case was handled — potentially reaching all the way to Governor Josh Shapiro.
The Greenbergs are offering Sam Goldberg a chance to be part of the solution. The federal government is offering subpoenas. One is an invitation. The other isn't optional.

What makes a family member turn killer? Three active cases are forcing that question into focus. Nick Reiner stands accused of stabbing his parents, director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, to death at their Brentwood home. He has a documented history of schizoaffective disorder, eighteen rehab stays, and a 2020 mental health conservatorship. His attorney withdrew while insisting Nick is "not guilty of murder"—signaling an insanity defense. Paul Caneiro is on trial in New Jersey for the 2018 murders of his brother Keith, sister-in-law Jennifer, and their two children at the family's Colts Neck mansion. Prosecutors say financial desperation drove the killings after Keith discovered Paul stealing from their businesses. Testimony this week included the final phone call between the brothers and graphic details about the children's injuries. Michael McKee, a vascular surgeon whose medical license had expired, pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe.
Ballistic evidence allegedly ties a gun from McKee's property to the crime scene. All three cases involve family members. All three involve alleged warning signs that went unheeded. And all three leave the same question: what should families do when troubled becomes dangerous?

Major breaking news in the Aaron Spencer case out of Arkansas. Judge Barbara Elmore has been removed from the case by the Arkansas Supreme Court just two days before trial was set to begin. This marks the second time the state's highest court has had to intervene due to her conduct.
Elmore is the same judge who set bond for Michael Fosler — the 67-year-old man facing 43 felony charges including rape of a minor and child pornography. Fosler walked. Three months later, he allegedly took Spencer's daughter again. Spencer killed him. And the case landed right back on Elmore's desk.
She issued an unconstitutional gag order. The Supreme Court struck it down and warned her. She restricted courtroom access anyway. She refused to recuse. The Supreme Court removed her.
Meanwhile, dashcam footage from Fosler's truck — evidence that could prove self-defense — has vanished. The SD card went missing. The lead detective's testimony contradicts how the camera actually functions.
Fourteen Arkansas legislators have now filed a formal complaint with the Judicial Discipline Commission. The trial is on hold. Every ruling Elmore made is under review.
Judge Elmore faces no discipline. She returns to the bench Monday. Aaron Spencer still faces second-degree murder charges for protecting his daughter from a man the system released.

The legal strategy in the Nick Reiner case is becoming clear. When defense attorney Alan Jackson withdrew on January 7th, he told reporters his former client is "not guilty of murder" under California law—language that strongly points to a not guilty by reason of insanity defense. Nick Reiner, 32, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents, legendary director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, at their Brentwood home on December 14th. Nick has a documented history of schizoaffective disorder, was in and out of rehab eighteen times starting at age fifteen, and was placed under a mental health conservatorship in 2020. Sources say he had recently switched psychiatric medications and was becoming more erratic. Hours before the murders, Nick attended a Christmas party at Conan O'Brien's home, where witnesses described bizarre behavior—repetitive questions to guests, inappropriate attire, and an argument with his father.
Nick is now represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, who requested additional time to review the case. His arraignment has been delayed until February 23rd. If convicted, he faces life without parole or the death penalty. The DA's office hasn't decided whether to seek death and says it will consider the family's wishes.

The surgeon accused of killing Monique and Spencer Tepe in their Columbus home entered a not guilty plea Friday. Michael McKee stood silent while his defense attorney, Diane Menashe, spoke for him. That choice of attorney tells you everything about how this case is going to be fought.
Menashe is the same lawyer who defended Dr. William Husel in 2022 — the Mount Carmel physician charged with murdering fourteen patients through allegedly lethal fentanyl doses. She called one witness during the entire defense. Husel was acquitted on all counts. Now she's representing another doctor facing murder charges.
The prosecution includes Franklin County Prosecutor Shayla Favor, taking on her first felony case after a career in property code enforcement. She'll be supported by veteran homicide prosecutors, but the matchup raises questions about experience and strategy in a case drawing national attention.
Today we break down what the not guilty plea signals, how Menashe's defense philosophy could shape the trial, and the new details emerging about McKee's pattern of evasion — including a malpractice lawsuit that couldn't locate him for months before the killings. Process servers found fake addresses, TVs turning off when they knocked, and colleagues who said he "just disappeared."
The battle lines are drawn. This is how it begins.

The last known phone call between Keith and Paul Caneiro was played for jurors in Monmouth County Superior Court—and it reveals a man at the end of his patience. "I need it—I need it. Give me the f***ing login, Paul!" Keith demanded, giving his brother until 8 p.m. to provide access to a trust account. By the next afternoon, Keith Caneiro, 50, was dead on the front lawn of his Colts Neck mansion with five gunshot wounds. Inside, his wife Jennifer, 45, and their children—11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia—were found stabbed and burned.
Paul Caneiro, 58, is on trial for four counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say greed drove Paul to slaughter his brother's family after Keith discovered he was stealing from their shared businesses. Testimony from a financial crimes detective revealed multiple transfers from Keith's trust account into Paul's personal account with no repayment. Hours before the Colts Neck fire was reported, Paul allegedly set fire to his own Ocean Township home while his wife and daughters slept inside. Evidence includes bloody clothing with DNA matching the child victims and a gun matched to the murder weapon. Paul's defense attorney claims investigators ignored a third brother. Paul has been in jail without bail since November 2018.
