January 17, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 10:1-9 - Prog 46
Here in Mark 10:1-9, Pharisees question Jesus about divorce. Jesus asks them what did Moses command? They went to Deuteronomy 24, which Moses wrote as a permission not a command. But Jesus refers them to Gen.1 and 2 which Moses also wrote but in the form of a statement Gen.1:27 followed by a command Gen.2:24. Pharisees emphasized divorce. But Jesus emphasized marriage. Dr. Mitchell gives us several scripture references which deal with marriage and divorce. He will speak of the purpose of marriage and love that God originally designed for man and woman. As for divorce, Dr. Mitchell declares that the law of divorce was originally given to the Jews for their protection not to the world. January 14, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:42-50 - Prog 45
In Mark 9, we finish up this chapter
with Jesus’ words. He continues His instruction concerning maintaining peace
amongst believers. In saying this, our
Lord speaks of rewards for whose who
support the followers of Christ with
even a cup of water.
But Jesus also addresses the need to
deal with sin especially that which affects little ones. Here Jesus speaks
of the severe consequences upon those
who cause one of these little ones who
believe in Christ to stumble.
Then our Lord addresses the
sin in one’s own life. By
way of a form of speech called hyperbole, a figure of speech,
Jesus uses exaggerated word pictures of severe actions towards one's own sin in the body.
These actions are not to be done
literally. Jesus is emphasizing the need to deal seriously and decisively with personal sin.

January 13, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:33-41 - Prog 44
Our study next procedes to Mark 9:33-41
with Dr. Mitchell. In this portion of
Scripture, Our Lord Jesus gives His disciples a lesson in humility and a
Biblical perspective on others who serve the Lord outside of one’s own
ministry. Jesus said, “For he that is
not against us is for us.”
This is our Lord’s perspective for those in Christian service who may differ in
some respect with others who also love
the Lord Jesus Christ, His finished
work, and His Word.
The Apostle Paul further expands on this
truth in Ephesians chapter 4:1-6 where we are reminded that believers in Christ
are exhorted to maintain the unity of
the Spirit in the bond of peace.

January 12, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:22-32 - Prog 43
We conclude Mark’s words on the incident
of Jesus’ casting out of a spirit from
a young boy and the disciples’ question concerning why they were not able to
cast out that tormenting spirit. Once again, our Lord said this kind of spirit could only be cast out by the kind of
faith that believes that with God, all
things are possible.
From then on, Mark writes that our Lord Jesus
taught His disciples that He, the Son of
Man was going to be delivered up into
the hands of men, and be killed and
after three days rise again.
This is now the 3rd time in this chapter
that the Lord Jesus Christ points out His death and resurrection to His
disciples who had yet to understand what He meant.

January 11, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:14-21 - Prog 42
Our study continues the episode in Mark 9:14-21 where Jesus casts out a
spirit from a child. His father said it
had often cast the boy into fire and into water trying to destroy him.
He said this had been happening to him
since he was a young child.
Here Jesus draws out the faith of the
father in his desperate plea for help, saying, to this father, “All things are possible to him that believes."
Our Lord then proceeds to cast out the deaf and dumb spirit from the boy.
The other 9 disciples asked Jesus why
they could not cast it out. Once again,
Jesus replied that it requires the kind of
faith exercised in prayer to cast out
that kind of spirit.

January 10, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:10-16 - Prog 41
Our study in the Gospel of Mark resumes
in Chapter 9 verse 10 where Mark writes that Jesus and His 3 disciples, Peter, James and John, were coming down from the mountain where our Lord Jesus had
been transfigured before them.
The 3 disciples had a question for Jesus
after He told them that the Son of Man
was to rise again. They were wondering
what rising from the dead meant.
So they asked Him about Elijah, saying, 'Isn’t Elijah supposed to come first?' Jesus said, Yes, and yet how is
it that the Son of Man must suffer?
Our Lord once again turns their focus to
His coming death and resurrection, before telling them that Elijah had already come in the person of John the Baptist.

January 07, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:1-9 - Prog 40
We continue from our last lesson in the
same passage, Mark 9:1-9. This passage
concerns the transfiguration of our Lord
Jesus Christ with Peter, James and John
in His presence. Also appearing with Him
were Elijah and Moses.
Peter writes of this event in 2 Peter 1
as being there with our Lord, seeing the
coming of the Lord in glory.
Also in this passage, the disciples were
overshadowed by a cloud. Out of this
cloud came a voice saying, “This is My
beloved Son; listen to Him”. Here God
the Father commends Jesus His Son. Then, in speaking to the disciples,
He tells the disciples to listen to His Son, Jesus.
How are you doing in listening to the words of the Savior as revealed in the

January 06, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:1-9 - Prog 39
Mark chapter 9:1 is the starting point of
this lesson of our study in the Gospel of Mark
with Dr. John G. Mitchell.
Mark, having written that Jesus is identified as the Christ by Peter, and
then the Lord’s revelation of His coming
death and resurrection, our Lord now takes three of His disciples, Peter,
James and John and they go up the
mountain, probably Mt. Hermon.
Here the Lord Jesus Christ is
transfigured before them. Both Elijah
and Moses are there speaking with the Lord.
Dr. Mitchell makes mention of the fact
that the transfiguration is a picture
of the coming of Christ in glory at His
second coming to reign on earth in His kingdom. He also differentiates this
event from the rapture, the coming of
the savior for the church.

Dr. Mitchell mentions the thrill that he
received when listeners wrote to him.
He would take time out of his day to
personally respond to each letter with a
hand written note of encouragement to
the listener. I too received his letters as
well. We at the Unchanging Word also

pray needs and encouragements.
Now in this lesson, Dr. Mitchell leads
us through Mark 8:34-38 when Jesus gives
his disciples and the people with him the revelation of what a real disciple is, one of self denial.

being ashamed of Him and of His
words in this present generation. It is
a mark of discipleship to put Christ and
His words first in one’s life then also
before the people of this generation.

January 04, 2022 Gospel of Mark - Mark 8:31-33 - Prog 37
Our study is in Mark 8:31-33 as the Lord
Jesus prepares His disciples for His
coming suffering, death and resurrection.
Dr. Mitchell gives us an understanding as to the need for Jesus to die for our
sin before a holy, righteous God. And in
so doing, He made it possible for this
holy righteous God to love us and show
His mercy, grace and forgiveness to each
one of us. This is now guaranteed to us
by God having raised the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead in the same
identical but glorified body as was crucified
on the cross.
We next read of how Satan tempted Peter in
his ignorance to try to thwart God’s
purpose for the Savior, even this one who was
close to Him.
