We are now in Mark 8:31 as Dr. Mitchell

takes us through this verse. It shows

Jesus’ program, that is that Jesus was

going to suffer.

Dr. Mitchell helps us see why the Savior

must die and be raised again.

He points out that the Lord Jesus shares

with His disciples His coming death and

resurrection. Jesus always mentions His

resurrection every time He speaks of His death. To speak of His death apart from

His resurrection would be a tragedy.

Dr. Mitchell makes note of the fact that

the Jewish nation thought there were two

messiahs. One that would die and one that would reign. But as it turned out,

there was One Messiah, Jesus, who would

both die and will later on also reign in

His Kingdom.

Who is this Jesus? Who do you say that I

In Matthew 16:17 we see the answer is by the revelation from the rock, the God and

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Turn with us to Mark 8:27 as Dr.

In this program, Dr. Mitchell will cover

a lot of territory. We will read 5 stories.

Mark begins with Jesus’ healing of a deaf and mute man and Jesus being lauded for doing all things well.

Next, the Lord’s compassion is once

again shown in the feeding of the 4000.

In another episode, the Pharisees were

seeking a sign from Jesus to test Him

which He did not provide to that

generation.

Then Jesus warns His disciples

concerning the leaven of the Pharisees

and Herod, hypocrisy and kingdom

politics.

Finally, we read of the healing of a

blind man after Jesus takes him outside

an unbelieving city telling him not to

return to it.

We trust the Lord’s presence will be

evident to you in these passages.

To sum up, our Lord turns to the people

giving them a heads-up on the

differences between eating and sinning.

Well His disciples wanted further

instruction as to what He meant by the

parable. The Lord Jesus was amazed that even the disciples did not understand the difference between the material and

the spiritual, between eating food which

goes into the stomach and is flushed

away and the sins which come from the heart of a person and defiles them before God.

Mark goes on to show an incident in the region of Tyre on the north coast. Here

the Lord Jesus honors the faith of a gentile woman. The Lord answers her

request even though she was not under

the covenant of Israel.

Christ honors faith in Him wherever it is found.

Here is Dr. Mitchell, Mark 7:14, on the

Jesus confronts the Pharisees whose

foolishness was revealed by their holding to the tradition of man made

rules and were in effect making the very Word of God of no value at all.

We are in Mark 7:1-13. Jesus rebukes

these religious rulers for setting aside

the very Word of God in order to keep

their traditions. Our Lord gives an

example of the priority of the Word of

God over man made rules as regards one’s

responsibility to one’s parents. These

rulers were rejecting the Word of God by placing their tradition as the priority

of what to believe and how to live in

family relationships.

The Word of God has the priority of authority in one’s life. It should be

placed as priority over man made rules.

Jesus’ power over nature is demonstrated

in this lesson. We are in Mark 6:45-56.

Our Lord, having gone up to a mountain

to pray, subsequently began walking

across the water on the sea of Galilee. The disciples saw Him and were frightened

because He appeared to them to be a

phantom, a ghost. This happened at night, between 3-6 in the morning.

Have you ever thought how they

saw Him at night?

Here our Lord is so precious to us. He

first encourages them personally, saying

‘Take heart, or be of good cheer’ and

then identifies Himself, ‘It is I’, and then says ‘Stop being afraid.’ The Lord

Jesus can and will identify Himself to

the heart of each of us who are trusting

Jesus Himself in the midst of the storm.

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging

In our passage, Mark 6:30-44, Mark

presents the Savior once again.

Here Jesus cares for His disciples and

takes them on a retreat to rest for a

while.

Then Jesus feeds 5000 men and their

families. He does this miracle because

He had compassion on them for they were

like sheep without a shepherd, so He

taught them. Have you experienced the

compassion of our Lord Jesus?

Have His words been comforting

and encouraging to you from the good shepherd?

This miracle is the only one that is

recorded in all 4 gospels. And in the

Gospel of John this miracle is followed

by Jesus’s statement that He is the

bread of life, both in His person and

His work, that He has come down from

heaven to give life to the world.

John 6. Jesus is the bread of life.

Let’s open our Bible to Mark 6:30 with

Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Mark now gives us a passage that shows

the Lord sending out the twelve disciples two by two, in pairs.

They were to preach and to cast out

demons and anoint the sick that they

may be healed. This is what they did.

Dr. Mitchell declares how this shows us

the encouragement of those who travel

together in the gospel. He notes the

partnership of Peter and John, Barnabas

and Paul and Paul and Silas in the book

of Acts.

The disciples then returned and reported

to Jesus all they had done and taught.

This outreach by Jesus even reached the

ears of King Herod.

Dr. Mitchell then gives us an overview

of Herod’s treatment of John the Baptist

whom he had beheaded, for no good reason.

Let’s turn to Mark 6:7 with Dr.

Have you heard the phrase, “Familiarity

breeds contempt?”

In our passage, Mark 6:1-8, this phrase

is exemplified. Our Lord Jesus had come into his own country, his own town

and into his own family.

Here our Lord is teaching in their

synagogue. People, hearing Him teach, were astonished.

What were they amazed at? They were

amazed at His wisdom and His miracles.

After all, they thought, 'This man is only an

ordinary carpenter.' Jesus, also, was amazed - at their unbelief for they were offended at Him.

Jesus’ words are so true, “A prophet is

not with out honor except in his

hometown, and among his relatives and in

his household.” Have you ever experienced this rejection from anyone

who is close to you because of your

faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? It does

happen doesn’t it?

Ephesians 1:6 We are accepted in the Beloved.

Mark provides two miracles from our

Savior. A woman is healed after 12 years of hemorrhaging and a little girl 12 years old

is raised from the dead.
