In a lot of his work he gracefully reaches across communal lines. He also was a great lover of urdu. This is one of series of Ghazal linked to ‘karbal katha’ on the page ‘kaaba-kaashi’ including many cross-religious categories reflecting the accepting and inclusive culture that used to be India. In 680 CE, in karbala, husain and his family and followers, heavily outnumbered and facing certain death, chose to take a principled and courageous stand rather than accept injustice. This has become symbolic across many communities.

‘dil par bhi hukoomat hoti’ – whose heart is in the realm of whom? (a) husain’s heart in the realm of love of god (b) human heart in the realm of love of husain. ‘daaman chhoRna’ is to let go of something especially something desirable. All companions/followers soaked in blood, but still they did not let go of their faith. This could also mean that husain lost all companions but still did not let go of his faith in god. This is the way to show love, this is the way to show devotion.
