  • Vikings vs 49ers - Climbing The Pocket Network Round Table
Tick tock, let’s go! The Climbing The Pocket Network and Daily Norseman personalities recorded after your Minnesota Vikings after beating the New Orleans Saints talking about the Wildcard win and looking forward to the Divisional round vs the San Francisco 49ers.Ā
Ā After basking in the glow of the overtime victory against the Saints, Matt broke down the wrinkles in the Mike Zimmer defense that was masterfully implemented. Nick discussed Kirk Cousins and how he started a little shaky, causing the fans to worry, but turned it around, and as Ed said, ā€˜his best performance of his career.ā€ It may not have been stat-wise, but for a get over the hump mentally, it sure was. Because of this performance of leading the team to a win, and hopefully more between now and early February, Ed talked about a possible extension and what exactly that may look like.
Ā The star of the show, Flip, went on an epic rant about how the Vikings were underdogs, are still underdogs, and the only way they get respect is to win. Jayson and Ed were ready to run through walls afterwards. That’s how good it was. What do you think?
Ā We hope you enjoy this type of formatted show. Dave from ā€˜Good Morning Gjallarhorn’, Jayson from ā€˜Climbing The Pocket’, Flip from ’15 Minutes with Flipmazzi’, Ed and Mike from ā€˜Skoldiers’, Nick from ā€˜The Pocket Protectors’, and Matt Fries, one of our fantastic writers appreciate you taking in the show. Please feel free to ask questions and suggest topics for discussion in future Round Table shows here or on Twitter. Have a great victory week, and as always be safe, and GO VIKINGS! Beat the Niners!

  • Vikings vs Saints - GMG In The Raw Wildcard Edition
Vikings vs Saints… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings were victorious over the New Orleans Saints down at the Mercedes Benz Super Dome Sunday afternoon and it was glorious! If you missed the live GMG ITR broadcast, it is here. Join Ted, Drew, Dave and special guest from the Daily Norseman, Mr. Christopher Gates. After getting a little lubed up during the game, the guys go over the keys to the win. It was fun, and we all need a little more of that, especially on a Monday. LOL.
Ā Mike Zimmer planned a brilliant game. His out of the box thinking of moving Danielle Hunter and Everyone Griffen into the interior rushing spots was spot on. That move generated much quicker pressure on Drew Brees and put him off of his ā€˜normal’ game. The rest of the defense, especially some of the veterans like Xavier Rhodes, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris were playing at the tops of their games. Yeah baby! It was very much needed and appreciated.
Ā Kevin Stefanski play calling, though worrisome at times, seemed to be working to set up plays that would happen later. Dalvin Cook had an awesome first half causing the Saints to respect his ability which then opened up the room outs and play action. It was in that second phase, and especially in overtime, that it payed off. Stefon Diggs was angry early not getting anything thrown his way [he was double covered], but then made some key catches in the second half. But with Diggsy being covered, that left Adam Thielen more open to do what he does. Other than his early fumble, Thielen looked back to full form and it paid off. Boy, did it ever pay off, when in OT Kirk Cousins launches the most import pass of his career. It was a 40 yarder to Thielen at the 3 yard line. Three plays later he then again Kyle Rudolph on a fade in the corner of the end zone to win the game. The Vikings’ ā€˜Go Get It’ image with Rudy snagging a ball couldn’t have been more prophetic if it had tried.
Ā Enjoy this win. You all have earned it!

  • Vikings vs Saints - GMG Preview Show Wildcard Edition
Vikings vs Saints… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings are heading down to Big Easy but it surely won’t be against the New Orleans Saints. This is the NFC Wildcard game where one team advances and the starts its offseason. Pressure abounds for the organization with many players and coaches playing for their futures. How well they handle the pressure and play will be the question, and it is a big one.
Ā Hopefully Minnesota fortunes continue after the impressive Gophers win on Wednesday. They came out aggressive and beat a favored Auburn. The Vikings will have to do the same thing. Fortunately, the offense is 100% healthy as of Friday’s injury report, and with the style of zone blocking and play action passes, the offense could have great success. The teams the Saints had problems with this year ran those types of schemes. The key will be to get Kirk Cousins passing and Dalvin Cook and the run game both comfortable early. They will be key. Which one do you think will be more critical to Vikings success? We’ll find out, and usually within the first quarter whether ā€˜good Kirk’ or ā€˜bad Kirk’ shows up. That is where the pressure also comes into play.
Ā It is the Vikings defense that will have a hard time against Drew Brees. Mac Alexander was ruled out and Mike Hughes was put on IR. That will mean the rotation of corners that has worked in the later part of the season won’t be there. Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes will have to be on the top of their games and Jayron Kearse will have to take advantage of his opportunity at nickel. He, for one, will be playing for his next contract. Pressure, pressure, pressure will be key, with converting it to best performances and to rattling the New Orleans offense to generate as much confusion and as many turnovers as possible. Like with ā€˜bad Kirk’ showing up, if the defense starts allowing the Saints to drive up and down the field, it could be a very long and upsetting day. Solution… Take the underdog status and prove everyone wrong.
Mike Zimmer has had his teams beat Sean Payton’s Saints before. He’ll have to do it again. Let’s road warrior this all the way to the Super Bowl. Ted, Drew and Dave will see after the game for what should be an absolutely epic post game. See you there!

  • Climbing The Pocket: Episode 182 [Happy but Not Content]
We start this episode discussing Myles getting punked by his almost 7-month old child before taking a walk down memory of this season. Myles walks a fine line between celebrating the team's success while also talking through some of the missed opportunities that cost us a handful of wins.
Yinka said he is "happy but not content" with the Viking season to date as making the playoffs is a laudable accomplishment but his expectations for this team are higher.
We discuss our expectations for the team in the playoffs and what we need to see for us to be encouraged about the team's future as currently constructed. Myles and Yinka give their score predictions to wrap things up.

    Playoff Run
The Vikings are healthy and they need to put it all together, now. We're looking for a complete game here.
    Vikings vs Saints
The offense has a big decision to make: ball control or try to outscore New Orleans. With Sheldon Rankins and Marcus Davenport on IR, they might be able to avoid the interior pass rush that crippled them in the past. The pass game needs to be explosive.
The defense has it's work cut out in a tough match up. New Orleans is near unstoppable, but maybe MIN can slow them down and create some turnovers. No way that happens without Eric Kendricks and the others at their best. The Zim Reapers are very opportunistic this year.
    Closing Notes
    Michael Thomas is ridiculous.
No Viking love in the playoff hype video C'MON MAN!
Packers fans should be cheering for us.

  • Skoldiers - 069 - Playoff Preview
    Vikings - Playoffs Overview
    Offense
Thielen and Dalvin will play but not at 100% IMO
Indoor game and not at primetime
I think we’ll need 28 at a minimum to win
Run and Pass should both be possible on this leaky injured defense
    HAVE TO START FAST
    Special Teams
    Bailey is on fireĀ
Have all the confidence in the world in him for FGs
Colquitt will play a big role
    Field position is MASSIVE
    30.11
    Defense
Have to play their best game of the year
They are clicking right now but it has to be even better
    Kendricks should playĀ
Will need him to cover Kamara and Cook
Cook scares me the most because he’s extremely athletic and has been clicking with Brees of late
Maybe we’ll see the Rhodes of old. Michael Thomas should bring out the best in him for a 1on1 matchupĀ
Try to get pressure - get those hands up
Tipping the quick passes could lead to TOs
    Make Brees uncomfortableĀ
He’s old / not nimble / could get jumpy if we can hit him hard early
    Coaching
Stefanski needs to have his best game ever. The scheme needs to be right - cannot have the Chicago / GB bullcrap.
Zim needs to focus his defense and bring out all the stops. Unique blitzes and trick plays. Leave it all on the field.Ā
Be ready for anything from Payton. Always be ready for fake punts / kicks.Ā
    NO Preview
They’ve won 6 of their last 7 and are averaging over 36 ppg in those games
Only loss was 46-48 in the game of the year to SF
Also run for over 100 in 6 of 7 (95 in the other)
    Kamara having a down seasonĀ
Scored twice week 3 and then nothing until the last two weeks
4 TDs the last two weeks
Gaining confidence at the right time
    Brees playing at elite level
    Only sacked 12 times
8 of those in ATL/LAR losses (0 sacks in SF game)
    Only 4 INTs
    Elite completion percentage at 74.3%
Gets rid of it quickly and accuratelyĀ
    Michael Thomas
    149 catches
3 shallowest catch depth in the NFL
Plays into the quick pass with his ability to get open quick and his length
