Walk Humbly

This week we begin a 40-day Lenten journey intended to focus our hearts and minds on the glory that awaits us on Easter morning. The disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the perfect tools to convert our hearts to the will of God, helping us to change for the better and grow closer to our Lord this Lenten season.

Undoubtedly, one of the hardest challenges in life is to forgive. Jesus tells us to love our enemies and forgive those who have offended us, and to not hold grudges. Just remember how often God forgives us, and pray for the grace to realize that no offense is unforgivable.

In 1992, St. John Paul II designed Feb. 11 as the World Day of the Sick, a time to pray for those suffering from illnesses as well as for caregivers who work so hard to alleviate the illnesses and afflictions others are experiencing. Let us spend this week praying for those who are suffering, and for all healthcare workers, in thanksgiving for their caring and generous service.

Every February 8, we mark the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking. Every year far too many American children are lured into the commercial sex trade, a crime against all of humanity. We must be aware of the warning signs and commit ourselves to vigilance.

In this week’s episode of the Walk Humbly Podcast, Bishop Burbidge talks about the ordination of Deacon Gonzalez, Life is VERY Good, the national March for Life, Catholic Schools Week, and more! Bishop Burbidge also shares two things he wants you to do following a disastrous abortion bill passed by the VA Senate.

Do we have two Popes?

Due to the fast pace of our lives, we can often walk through a day without recognizing the many signs of God's presence in our midst. Try to take moments throughout the day where we can simply pause and recognize God's presence - because God walks beside you and loves you, now and always.

This week as we pause to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King JR. there are so many words to describe him, courageous, determined, and unwavering are but a few.

This weekend, as we watch playoff football games on TV, we recognize the traits of champions - confidence, commitment, sacrifice and discipline being among them. These are also traits of spiritual champions, and things we should keep in mind when we're on our own faith journeys.

As we begin the new year, resolve to entrust your life to God with childlike trust. Once you hand over your anxieties and worries to the Lord, the worries and complications of each new day will slowly melt away.
