Do something for yourself

    As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday aftemoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania.

    Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and barn provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.

    I was used to parlors neat as a pin that seemed to whisper, 'Not to be touched!'

    I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I'd wanted more than anything to be allowedto climb the stonewalls surrounding the property.

    My parents would never approve. The walls were old,some stones were missing, others loose and crumbling.

    Still, my yearning to scramble across those walls grew so strong.

    One spring afternoon, I summoned all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after dinner.

    'I, uh, I want to climb the stonewalls,' I said hesitantly.

    Everyone looked up. 'Can I climb the stonewalls?'

    Instantly a chorus went up from the women in the room.'Heavens, no!' they cried in dismay.'You'll hurt yourself!'

    I wasn't too disappointedthe response was just as I'd expected.

    But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather' s booming voice.

    'Hold on just a minute,' I heard him say, 'Let the boy climb the stonewalls.He has to learn to do things for himself.'

    'Scoot,' he said to me with a wink, 'and come and see me when you get back.'

    For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls and had the time of my life.

    Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventure. I'll never forget what he said.

    'Fred,' he said, grinning, “弗雷德,”他咧着嘴笑道。

    'you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.'

    Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America.

    There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same:

    my message to children at the end of almost every visit, 'There's only one person in this whole world like you, and people can like you exactly as you are.'

Lydia

    When we two parted In silence and tears,
    昔日依依惜别,默默无言地流着泪,
    Half broken-hearted, To sever for years,
    要分开好几个年头,我们忍不住心碎,
    Pale grew thy cheek and cold, Colder thy kiss;
    你的脸冰凉、发白,你的吻更似冷冰;
    Truly that hour foretold Sorrow to this.
    呵,那一刻正预兆了我今日的悲痛。
    The dew of the morning Sank chill on my brow— It felt like the warning Of what I feel now.
    清早凝结着寒露,冷彻了我的额角-是对我此刻的警告,悲伤在今天。
    Thy vows are all broken, And light is thy fame:
    你的誓言全破碎了,你的行为如此轻浮:
    I hear thy name spoken, And share in its shame.
    人家提起你的名字,我听了也感到羞辱。
    They name thee before me, A knell to mine ear;
    他们当着我讲到你,一声声有如丧钟;
    A shudder comes o'er me— Why wert thou so dear?
    我的全身一阵颤栗-为什么对你如此情重?
    They know not I knew thee, Who knew thee too well:
    没有人知道我熟识你,呵,熟识得太过了:
    Long, long shall I rue thee Too deeply to tell.
    我将长久、长久地悔恨,这深处难以为外人道。
    In secret, we met— In silence, I grieve That thy heart could forget, Thy spirit deceive.
    你我秘密地相会-我又默默地悲伤,你竟然把我欺骗,你的心终于遗忘。
    If I should meet thee After long years, How should I greet thee? — With silence and tears.
    偶尔再相会,多年后万一在陌路,我跟你该怎么打招呼?—用沉默,用眼泪。

    The Flower-School
    When storm clouds rumble in the sky and June showers come down,
    The moist east wind comes marchingover the heath to blow its bagpipes among the bamboos.
    Then crowds of flowers come out of a sudden,
    from nobody knows where,
    and dance upon the grass in wild glee.Mother,
    I really think the flowers go to school underground.
    They do their lessons with doors shut,and if they want to come out to playbefore it is time,
    their master makesthem stand in a corner.
    When the rains come they have their holidays.
    Branches clash together in the forest,
    and the leaves rustle in the wild wind,
    the thunder-clouds clap their giant handsand the flower children rush out in dresses of pink and yellow and white.
    Do you know, mother, their homeis in the sky, where the stars are .
    Haven't you seen how eager they areto get there?
    Don't you know why they are in such a hurry?
    Of course, I can guess to whom they raise their arms:they have their mother as I have my own.
    你不知道它们为什么那样急急忙忙么?
    我自然能够猜得出它们是对谁扬起双臂来:它们也有它们的妈妈,就像我有我自己的妈妈一样。

    HOPE | 希望
    作者:Emily Bronte | 主播:Lydia

    Hope was but a timid friend;
    希望只是个羞怯的友伴,
    She sat without the grated den,
    她坐在我的囚牢之外,
    Watching how my fate would tend,
    以自私者的冷眼旁观
    Even as selfish-hearted men.
    观察我的命运的好歹。
    She was cruel in her fear;
    她因胆怯而如此冷酷。
    Through the bars one weary day,
    郁闷的一天,我透过铁栏,
    I looked out to see her there,
    想看到我的希望的面目,
    And she turned her face away!
    却见她立即背转了脸!

    Like a false guard, false watch keeping,
    像一个假看守在假意监视,
    Still in strife, she whispered peace;
    一面敌对一面又暗示和平;
    She would sing while I was weeping,
    当我哀泣时她吟唱歌词,
    If I listened, she would cease.
    当我静听她却噤口无声。
    False she was, and unrelenting;
    她心如铁石而且虚假。
    When my last joys strewed the ground,
    当我最后的欢乐落英遍地,
    Even Sorrow saw, repenting,
    见此悲惨的遗物四处抛撒
    Those sad relics scattered round;
    就连“哀愁”也遗憾不已;
    Hope, whose whisper would have given
    而希望,她本来能悄悄耳语
    Balm to all my frenzied pain,
    为痛苦欲狂者搽膏止痛,
    Stretched her wings, and soared to heaven,
    却伸展双翼向天堂飞去,
    Went, and ne'er returned again!
    一去不回,从此不见影踪。
