  • Stoic Keys to Courage

Breaking down Ryan Holiday’s (@ryanholiday) Daily Stoic post on the 7 Stoic Keys to being Courageous.

Ruth Gordon 👏Courage is very important. Like a muscle, it is strengthened by use.

    The list as presented:

    1. Remember that we suffer more in imagination than in reality.
    2. Don’t try to picture everything bad that could possibly happen. Stick with the situation at hand.
    3. Be OK with looking foolish or stupid.
    4. Adversity Reveals – look at difficulty as a sparring partner, a chance to prove yourself.
    5. Consider what else you’ve been through. What you’ve had the strength to endure.
    6. Quit worrying about what other people will think.
    7. Remind yourself that without difficulty, no one can ever know what you’re capable of, not even you.

This is a great way to frame approaching daily courage and as Coach Divine likes to say, Fortune favors the brave.

  • Christian Griffith; Finisher on The Selection

A great discussion about Christian’s adventure on the show The Selection as well as his history of extreme events and training. I’ve been a fan of this man for some time now ever since I saw him on the show. I had prepared a bunch of questions to help ease us along and get into the mindset of what it’s like to walk the path of the warrior but in listening to his stories he just exemplifies it by the way he is in life.

    About Christian

    From his website Run2Heal: https://run2heal.hfc.org/christian-griffith-runner-resume

My sexual abuse does not define me, it fuels me. I am not a victim, I’m a fighter. I have completed over 100 races of marathon distance or farther, racing over volcanoes, across deserts, and through tropical jungles and infested swamps, all over the world. I’ve earned my 50-mile bib at World’s Toughest Mudder on CBS, took a beating on American Ninja Warrior on NBC, and survived Hell as a finisher on THE SELECTION: Special Operations Experiment, on History Channel. I have successfully completed the Fuego Y Agua 100K Trail Ultramarathon in Nicaragua more times (3) than anyone else in the history of the race.

I’ll never be a one-trick pony. In my early years, I missed a lot of potentially great experiences because I thought I was “too cool” to do anything but beach sports. Now, I want to try everything and do anything healthy and productive that challenges my body, mind, and spirit thoroughly. My motto is Live for a Living. I strive for it every day.

  • Training for Courage & Being Present

How do you prepare to be “present” during an event or performance? Well, it’s not easy, but there are ways to get you ready one big one is to train your mind. Overcome fear and performance anxiety with Gene and Aaron as they go over these topics.

Three States of the Warrior’s Mind

Zanshin, Mushin, Fudoshin: Apply the ways of Karate-do to harness the Warrior’s Mind

    Zanshin — The Fighting Mind

Definition: Total awareness, alertness —being aware of your surroundings and enemies, while being prepared to react.

When we choose to live intentionally and act with purpose we no longer fall victim to whatever happens to us throughout our day.

    Mushin — ‘Mind No Mind’

Definition: A mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion and thus open to everything.

If we remain cluttered mentally, focused on something else, something other than what we are immediately engaged in — we fail.

Mushin is the state of mind that is not fixed on any one thing, not cluttered up by your everday thoughts or emotions. In combat this is essential because you must not try to guess what your opponent is going to do next, you must simply experience and react to them.

    Fudoshin —The Immovable Mind

Definition: It is a philosophical or mental dimension to Japanese martial arts which contributes to the effectiveness of the advanced practitioner.

When you set your mind on something and let NOTHING stand in your way to getting what you want or achieving your goal that is Fudoshin. It doesn’t mean to achieve your goal at all costs, doing it without bringing harm to others is essential. But the central concept is the unbreakable will to finish what you started.

Zen practice teaches us about the four sicknesses of the mind (or “Shikai”) which are; anger, doubt, fear, and surprise.

More on this in the article here.

  • Stoic Ideas & How to Harness Them

In his article Leo Zeballos ponders “4 Stoic Ideas That Are Changing The Way I Think and Live“. This one made me really think through some things and I wanted to share it with you.

    Stoic Philosophy

Stoicism has been a common thread though some of history’s great leaders. It has been practiced by Kings, presidents, artists, writers and entrepreneurs. Marcus Aurelius. Frederick the Great, Montaigne, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Theodore Roosevelt, General James Mattis, —just to name a few—were all influenced by Stoic philosophy.  From The Daily Stoic

I mentioned The Daily Stoic in my ramblings and I would highly encourage you to dig deep into this website for a full back history of Stoic Philosophy and the stories of the famous philosophers who we now utilize in our meditations.

    366 Meditations Book

A great book that I have personally used over the years is 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living.

The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you’ll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms.

By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you’ll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

    1. Our Judgments About Reality Are More Harmful than Reality Itself. Be conscious of your perceptions and judgments about a negative situation. Don’t force your perceptions to be positive, but tyr to make them 15% less negative than they are
    2. Remember To Bring Your Attention To the Things That You Do. Remember to live. If you become aware you’re living on autopilot and only reacting to life, bring your attention to the things that you do.
    3. If An Obstacle Gets in The Way It Doesn’t Mean You Should Quit. An obstacle doesn’t mean you should give up. Instead, it’s a sign that you’re on the right path and you need to continue.
    4. Learn To Embrace Your Weirdness and Accept Yourself. Embrace your weirdness. Don’t stop caring about what other people think, but realize it’s more important and easier to accept yourself rather than crave acceptance from others.
