I got back in the trail racing saddle this weekend for the first time in what seems like eons, a 50K trail race in the Colorado mountains, and definitely gained and/or re-lived some insights that I want to share with you that can hopefully help your racing, or for that matter, inspire you in many areas of your life.

Jessica Gutierrez grew up in a split family and also suffered from learning issues in school that caused other kids to pick on her. She became withdrawn and started falling well behind in school. Eventually two things pulled her back up. One was an accurate diagnosis of dyslexia, a learning disorder that I think is vastly underestimated. There is no medication, training, or cure for dyslexia. Those afflicted have to learn to live with it for life. The other thing that helped Jessica to feel acceptable both to other kids and herself was sports. Jessica discovered that she had enormous talent in soccer, basketball, and track. The success she experienced, along with the mentorship of several caring coaches and a better schooling situation, helped propel her to improve her grades, move on to college, and a career in veterinary medicine with a solid upward trajectory. Jessica will always deal with her dyslexia, but she is a great example of persevering and always believing there is a better path ahead for those willing to beat the odds.

Is it hard to run a marathon on a prosthetic blade? If you listened to the episode this spring with Brian Reynolds, and I encourage you to go back and listen to it if you didn’t, you’d probably agree the answer is yes. Completing a triathlon, a 100-miler, completing the Tunnel Hill 100-miler in less than 19 hours? You’d even more likely say that’s amazing. And you’d say Adam Popp of Golden, CO is amazing. Adam joined the Air Force at 18 years old, and volunteered to become a bomb disposal technician. He served a tour in Iraq and then while on duty in Afghanistan he inadvertently detonated an IED that blew off his leg and severely injured his arm. He woke up in a military hospital in Germany, then spent months Stateside experiencing the teamwork and camaraderie of the military applied to his recovery and physical therapy. He decided to focus that military discipline and intensity into the athletic world and eventually found his niche in running and triathlons. The not-so-secret of this 43-year old’s improvement, as I often preach, is his consistency. These sports have provided him the opportunity to run races like the Boston and Prague Marathons, the JFK 50-miler multiple times, the CCC, which is a very difficult 100K on the UTMB course in Chamonix, France, the World Triathlon Para Championships in Yokohama, Japan and a lot more, with upcoming major triathlon races coming in Montreal and the UK. Adam is also currently getting a Master’s degree in Sports and Performance Psychology from the University of Denver to help other athletes improve their own sports careers. He got married last year, and he and his wife are now expecting their first child. I believe you will be really inspired by Adam’s courage and drive, the kind of story I love bringing to you on the WASP.

These two guests are inspirational and a lot of fun. Reana and Alex Kaminsky were high-level college athletes who after graduation got deeply entrenched in the working world, and long hours here, traveling there, grabbing fast food meals here, not making time to exercise there, and next thing you know, each one had gained more than 120 pounds. Once they recognized back in 2019 the toxic effects all of these factors were having on their lives, these inseparable sisters decided to attack these problems. They got back into the gym, reformed their diets, found better balance in their lives, and dropped the weight. They documented their journey on YouTube and other social media, and suddenly attracted a following that eventually led to Eating Well and Women’s Health magazines to write feature articles on them and landed them on The Doctors TV show. This opportunity to inspire others birthed their company called Get Real, with Real an amalgamation of their first names, Re and Al. In addition to highlighting their transformation stories to help others to do the same, they hope the company’s merchandise can serve as a daily reminder that real change comes from consistent action. They have a line of shirts, hoodies, hats, water bottles, and more with the Get Real message that they hope will inspire those who wear and use them, as well as others who see them, to follow in their footsteps to better physical and mental health. This gear and their stories are on www.getrealshop.com Listen along to these inspirational women who made positive changes in direction in their lives and are sharing it with you.

I’m going to introduce you today to a young businessperson who has a ton of energy, and has funneled his enthusiasm and work ethic to create a company that makes one high-quality product, an athletic nutrition bar called the ExcaliBar. Emmanuel Lai cuts no corners to ensure the quality of the ExcaliBar. But this episode isn’t about trying to sell a nutrition bar. For a young entrepreneur, he has a very high degree of awareness about ethical business practices, living an uncluttered life, self-fulfillment, and actualization, much coming from the hard-working habits he gleaned from his immigrant Taiwanese parents. So even though he could be pushing himself and his employees to work longer hours and expand the Heaven’s Pantry product line, he is for now satisfied in trying to have the most positive and efficient workplace possible and to make the ExcaliBar the best product in the crowded nutrition bar market. We cover a lot of subjects, talking about living a simple, uncluttered life, what leads to success in business and personal relationships, and doing our best to serve others. This episode just flies by, and I get a huge kick out of Manny’s Wolfman Jack voice – look him up if you aren’t old enough to know who Wolfman Jack was. You can order the ExcaliBar on Amazon, as I did, and I used the discount code that Manny gives out during this episode.

The American Heroes Run was the brainchild of David Clark who created the race based on the motto of "Patriotism Without Politics." The race honors first responders, military service people and veterans, the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and of course, David. It will take place on Sept. 9-10, 2022 at beautiful Rogers Grove Park in Longmont, Colorado. Distances are 5K, 9.11-miles, half-marathon, marathon, 9 hours and 11 minutes, 24 hours, and 100 miles. The course is a flat, very fast 1.05-mile loop that is half paved and half packed dirt. This means that every 1.05 miles runners will pass the fully-stocked aid station, bathrooms, and their own supplies as needed. All runners will receive a beautiful, patriotic-themed shirt. Finishers will receive an exclusive coin that David designed, and 100-mile finishers earn a commemorative belt buckle. Listen to this episode and you will learn about a $15 off discount code good through May 31. Come on out and enjoy a beautiful Colorado race! I’m really excited about today’s guest for what a difference he can make in your athletic performance. Christian Straka was an aspiring tennis player whose career got cut short by injury. Many athletes at this point choose to then get into coaching, but Christian opted for a slightly different emphasis – the mental side of the game. He has applied his insights into mindset coaching to top professional tennis players like former world #1 Victoria Azarenka, former #1 doubles player Mike Bryan, as well as athletes in other sports. Christian has created MindSize, an impressive 8-week mindset training program for athletes at all levels. Check it out on mindsizesports.com We discuss some of its points in this episode, including honing your focus, coping with fatigue and pain, conquering self-doubt, removing distractions, reducing performance anxiety, and much more. This kind of training, often overlooked by athletes, can make a dramatic difference in your performance. Thus, pay close attention as you might find more than a few nuggets that get you to the finish line, drop your time, earn a bigger buckle, and get more satisfaction from the results of your hard work.

Bruce Springsteen sang: "It takes a leap of faith to get things going; It takes a leap of faith you gotta show some guts; It takes a leap of faith to get things going; Yeah, in your heart baby you must trust." What I urge you here is in order to experience life fully, sometimes you need to take a leap of faith and do things that might seem very difficult or even out of reach. Take advantage of situations and opportunities when they arise, and often you will be richly rewarded. That's become something I'm striving to do more now in my life, and from which already I'm seeing the benefits, and I think you can do so, too.
