Welcome to the MormonNewsRoundup where Dives ruminates on the great and spacious Beehive!

Michael Ballam is an acclaimed American opera singer, educator, and performer, celebrated for his powerful bass-baritone voice and distinguished career on the opera stage. While many know him for his musical achievements, Latter-day Saints know him for something entirely different.

For years, Ballam portrayed Lucifer in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' filmed temple endowment presentation. His unforgettable performance became familiar to countless temple attendees before the Church retired the live-action films and replaced them with a newer presentation format.

This video is a supercut of every scene featuring Michael Ballam as Lucifer from that now-retired temple film, with a few creative edits added for entertainment. Whether you remember these scenes firsthand or are seeing them for the first time, this compilation showcases one of the most memorable performances from the era of the filmed endowment.

If you enjoy Mormon history, culture, and media analysis, consider subscribing for more content.

Have you seen this version of the temple film? Let me know in the comments what you thought of Ballam's portrayal of Lucifer.

In today’s video, we’re taking a look at a fascinating series highlighting some of the most unbelievable General Conference controversies of all time.

These moments come from General Conferences of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have sparked intense discussion among current members, former members, and critics of the Church.

The clips featured in this video come from BJ’s channel:

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP9rA7gFM9Ptu-7eZKf/

This supercut covers a variety of controversial moments, including statements about race and past teachings delivered from the pulpit, the Church’s connection to the Mark Hofmann forgery scandal, sexual purity messaging, and accusations that some General Authorities borrowed material without proper attribution.

Whether you already know these stories or you’re hearing them for the first time, these clips raise important questions about history, leadership, messaging, and how religious institutions respond when difficult moments from the past come to light.

Watch along as we break down these moments, examine the context, and discuss the questions they raise.

The Mormon News Roundup is NOT affilated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Many current and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have described feeling weighed down by a culture of perfectionism. They speak of constant pressure to do more, be more, and never feeling "good enough."

In this video, I step back from the debate and let the historical record speak for itself.

Rather than relying on secondhand summaries or isolated quotations, you'll hear directly from senior LDS leaders—primarily through General Conference messages—as they discuss perfection, worthiness, obedience, and becoming like Christ. These are the talks many people point to when discussing what has been called toxic perfectionism.

The video also examines an interesting contrast:

• Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's 2017 General Conference address, where he argues that Satan exploits feelings of demanded perfection.

• President Spencer W. Kimball's 1974 BYU devotional, which presents a much more demanding view of personal perfection.

• Modern psychological perspectives on perfectionism, shame, depression, and feelings of worthlessness.

Have Church teachings on perfection changed over time? Are these messages being misunderstood? Or do they contribute to unhealthy expectations for many members?

Watch the source material and decide for yourself.

The Mormon News Roundup is NOT affilated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For nearly 24 years, I worked for Brigham Young University and, by extension, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Most of that time was spent at BYU Independent Study, one of the largest accredited distance-learning programs in the United States. Looking back, I witnessed both dedicated employees doing their best and institutional problems that should have been addressed years earlier.

In this episode, I share my personal experiences working inside BYU, including:

• Why most Independent Study instructors were never background checked for decades

• How widespread student identity verification problems fueled cheating

• Why accreditation concerns eventually forced major changes

• What it was really like teaching music remotely before online learning became mainstream

• Why I was unexpectedly let go after nearly 24 years of employment

• The reality of BYU's extremely low adjunct pay, lack of benefits, and expectations of institutional sacrifice

• How ecclesiastical endorsements affected employees who privately lost their faith

• My reaction to learning about the Church's vast investment reserves after years of being told to sacrifice financially

This isn't an attack on the many wonderful people I worked with. I met countless dedicated coworkers who genuinely cared about students.

My criticism is directed toward institutional policies, leadership decisions, and a culture that too often expected employees to sacrifice while offering little in return.

If you enjoy thoughtful conversations about Mormonism, BYU, Church history, and current LDS news, consider subscribing to Mormon News Roundup.

I aim to present evidence, personal experience, and informed commentary while encouraging respectful discussion—even when the topics are controversial.

The Mormon News Roundup is NOT affilated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For several years, one small website published leaked LDS Church documents that changed conversations across the Mormon world.

MormonLeaks began in 2016 with a simple mission: provide a secure way for whistleblowers to anonymously submit authentic internal documents from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What followed was one of the most remarkable transparency projects in modern Mormon history.

In this documentary, we explore:

• How Ryan McKnight and Ethan Gregory Dodge founded MormonLeaks

• The leaked Apostle M. Russell Ballard mission president training video

• The publication of General Authority living allowance documents

• Internal presentations, financial records, administrative manuals, and policy documents

• Why the organization expanded into FaithLeaks and later became the Truth & Transparency Foundation

• The legal battles, financial challenges, and eventual closure of the organization

• The lasting impact MormonLeaks had on journalism, church transparency, and Mormon history

Whether you viewed MormonLeaks as a vital watchdog or a controversial publisher of confidential information, its influence is difficult to deny. For several years, it fundamentally changed how information about the LDS Church reached members, former members, journalists, and historians.

Today we're looking back at the rise, the controversies, and the legacy of one of the most influential organizations in modern Mormon history.

What do you think? Did MormonLeaks serve the public interest, or did it go too far? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The Mormon News Roundup is NOT affilated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For more than a decade, senior leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have rarely taken unscripted questions from journalists in public. Most media appearances are carefully managed, making these four events remarkable exceptions.

In this episode, we revisit the only four major occasions over the past 15 years when top Mormon leaders answered questions without prepared remarks:

• Jeffrey R. Holland's BBC interview in London (2012)

• Dallin H. Oaks' University of Virginia Q&A (2016)

• Russell M. Nelson's First Presidency press conference (2018)

• David A. Bednar's National Press Club appearance in Washington, D.C. (2022)

Rather than offering extensive commentary, this video presents these appearances in a mostly unedited format so you can watch the exchanges for yourself. Topics include LDS temple practices, LGBTQ issues, Church finances, religious freedom, women in the Church, media relations, and more.

How do senior Mormon leaders respond when they can't rely on prepared conference talks or carefully edited videos? Watch the interviews and decide for yourself.

Amy Logan has been one of the most thoughtful voices in the ex-Mormon community, helping thousands of people navigate faith transitions, religious trauma, and life after Mormonism. In this highlight from her final Exmormonology / Soul Searching Girl episode, Amy reflects on her own deconstruction, explains why she's stepping away from the ex-Mormon identity, and shares what she's learned about finding joy, purpose, and peace beyond a high-demand religion.

Leaving Mormonism is often only the beginning of a much larger journey. Amy discusses how healing continues long after a faith crisis and why she believes reclaiming your authentic self is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.

If you've experienced a faith transition—or you're simply interested in stories of personal growth—this conversation offers wisdom, hope, and encouragement.
