When David "Kochie" Koch signed off as co-host of Sunrise for the last time earlier this year, he joked that his 21-year tenure marked "the longest mistake in history". As he tells Something To Talk About in a candid and at times emotional conversation, he grappled with imposter syndrome and says he has never truly felt comfortable in the media.
Now, as he revels in a life that no longer includes 3.30am wake-ups, Kochie opens up on this Father's Day about the joy he takes in getting to spend more time with a sprawling family that includes his beloved wife of 44 years, Libby, four children and eight grandchildren and reflects on the values his late father instilled in him.
He also shares his observations of the three very different female co-hosts who sat alongside him during his two decades on breakfast TV and - adamant that he will "never" really retire - reveals his plans for the future, which might just include a new venture with former breakfast TV rival (and recent lunch date) Karl Stefanovic.
