I have a very special episode to share with you today, because for the first time, I’m interviewing my guest in PERSON! My family and I took a cross country road trip, and one of our stops was visiting my lovely friend, April Roberts, and her family. We’re diving into alllll the things like farm life, social media, therapy, traveling, relationships, and more on today’s episode.

April Roberts is the owner of Five Heart Farms in eastern New Mexico. She grew up in the city and moved to the farm 10 years ago. Since then, she’s created a place on their family farm for gathering the community to grow closer to agriculture and closer to one another. She’s passionate about mental health, family, growing flowers, and bringing people together.

In today’s episode, I want to dig into some simple ways to change your life today. While none of what I’m sharing may be earth shattering, groundbreaking information, these ARE things that have really helped me in my life. When we start making changes with our health, personal growth, career, etc., it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to do everything at once. I’ve learned we don’t really need to overcomplicate things, because it’s the small, micro changes that truly have a lasting impact on our lives. We only get this one life, so I want to encourage you to get very clear on what is serving you on your journey, and discover what intentionality looks like for you!

In this episode, we cover:

• Why walking has a ripple effect of benefits and is something many of us can do in some way
• How vital getting more sleep is
• Limiting your intake of mindless scrolling on social media and instead, focusing on being intentional with your time while on there
• Taking inventory of your community and WHO you’re surrounding yourself with 
• Adopting a phrase like ‘is this supporting the life I want?’
• Shifting your mindset and reframing your way of thinking to a place of gratitude
• Finding a therapist or coach who can really help you understand yourself and let go of what’s holding you back

I’ve been seeing a common thread in many spaces lately about communication in marriage, and what that looks like-especially when experiencing conflict. I knew my friend, Ashley Machado, would be the perfect person to bring on and share more about how to talk so your spouse will listen. 

Ashley Machado is a Tedx speaker and has been selected as a 2023 FFA Change Maker. She is rethinking the way we support mental health in the food and ag space. She specializes in tangible tools and simple strategies through mental health training and education for ag families and businesses alike. Ashley grew up in the dairy industry and now farms and ranches with her family in California’s central valley. She has her BA in human development and masters in social work with an emphasis in clinical mental health. Her goal is for everyone in the ag industry and rural America to have the tools they need in their mental health toolbox to operate and live life fully.

• How to get your partner on board with what you’re doing

In today's episode, I’m sharing something I’ve never really talked about extensively. For some reason, it’s been on my heart and my mind to talk about how, when, and why I reconsidered my relationship with alcohol. This is something that has looked very different for me in various seasons of my life, but it’s also impacted me in powerful ways. I know this is very personalized and unique for everyone, but I feel like there are some pieces of my process and journey that you will resonate with too. I hope this at least serves as an invitation for you to reevaluate anything in your own life, and not be afraid to make positive changes when you feel called to do so!

• My early relationship with alcohol, and how that affected me growing up
• My experience with alcohol in college, and how it made me feel around other people
• Realizing how much of my life was spent thinking about when I would have my next drink
• Navigating pregnancy and learning how to connect with others without bonding over drinking
• Starting my postpartum health journey and making the decision to remove alcohol from my diet for a 90 day habit challenge

On today’s episode, I’m challenging you with the question: Is Your Comfort Zone Holding You Back? When we have a dream on our heart, when we want to start something new, when we want to go against the grain - we think about everything that could go wrong. What if others judge me? What if this fails? What if I fail? All of these fears are normal because our brain is quite literally designed to keep us safe. But are these fears holding you back from bringing your true desires and purpose for your life to fruition?

• We logically KNOW that we can do anything, but sometimes we don’t FEEL that we can
• Our brain doesn’t know the difference between physical danger and emotional danger

I’m so excited about today’s conversation! I met Billie Asmus at a recent Women in Ag night where I was the keynote speaker. While there, Billie shared her story of bringing her product from idea to market and I *knew* it was a journey that someone in this community needed to hear! 

Billie is a mom of two, inventor and avid DIYer. She grew up in a small rural town in northern Wisconsin, met her husband and then moved to an even smaller rural town in Iowa. She grew up surrounded by incredible entrepreneurs and always knew she was going to take the same path. She sees her adhd as a super power to overcome obstacles and harness her creative mind with various different hobbies and skills.
