Chicago’s Lula Cafe is the winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality. The Logan Square restaurant was the sole winner among four local finalists for the coveted awards. The 33rd annual James Beard Restaurant & Chef Awards were handed out in Chicago Monday night. This is Lula’s first win, but its founder Chef Jason Hammel has been nominated before. A Michigan chef won Best Chef in the Great Lakes region, beating two Chicago nominees. Chicago chefs have won that category for the past several years.

The Ravinia Festival Association, the music organization which operates the concert and entertainment venue in Highland Park, has updated its federal lawsuit against Ravinia Brewing company.  The festival claims the brewing company is falsely implying a relationship. Ravinia Festival has also filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and trademark office requesting  cancellation of Ravinia Brewing Company’s registered trademark.

Also, the Sun Times is reporting the average cost for a hotel room during the city’s top three events, DNC, the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, and Lollapalooza will be about $535. Listen for more below:

The 2024 Fortune 500 list is out and Chicago has added two more big companies to the list of local heavy hitters. The city is home to 15 companies on the Fortune 500, up from 13 last year. Chicago ranks third for the most Fortune 500 companies after New York City with 41 and Houston with 21. Atlanta was third last year. The two new companies this year are GE HealthCare and Kellanova, the spin-off of Kellogg. The greater Chicago area has 31 Fortune 500 companies down from 32 last year. The biggest company on the list is Walgreens Boots Alliance.

Ascension health system says its electronic health records should be restored by June 14. That would be a little more than a month after it was hit by a cyberattack. The health system has restored some health records in some states where it operates but not all. In Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, Ascension says it’s still using manual and paper-based systems. Providers can send prescriptions electronically and pharmacy sites are open. Ascension says restoring everything is a complex process that’ll take time to complete. 

Also, ongoing production delays at Boeing have forced United Airlines to take delivery of some smaller jets to help it cover some routes. Listen for more below:

A Chicago-area medical waste disposal company is being purchased by a powerhouse trash hauler. Waste Management is buying Bannockburn-based Stericycle for $7.2 billion and will acquire all of its outstanding shares and $1.4 billion in debt. It’s one of the biggest-ever acquisitions in the waste management sector. The deal comes after reports last month that Stericyle was considering a sale. Waste Management was founded in Chicago but moved to Houston in 1998 when it merged with USA Waste Services. This deal is expected to close in the 4th quarter of the year but needs regulatory approval and the approval of Stericycle’s investors.
