The person charged with Kirk's murder, according to the police, stated he "had enough of his hatred" and disagreed with Kirk's anti-trans rhetoric. The 16-year-old who shot his classmates was reportedly immersed in online white supremacist groups. Social psychologists suggest that teenage boys and young men are disproportionately more vulnerable to online extremism. How does excessive online gaming and dangerous online forums contribute to social isolation, anxiety, depression and delayed emotional development.

1. Day Two of the federal government shutdown and millions of workers across the country are affected. Some are deemed "essential" and still must work without getting paid. Hundreds of thousands of others have been told to stay home. Let's get you up to speed on when lawmakers could next vote to end this government shutdown. Here's where things stand right now, the Senate is in session today, but no votes will be held in observance of the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. Votes are expected to resume tomorrow afternoon. If tomorrow the Senate fails to pass the House-passed resolution, the weekend is "up in the air." The chamber is not expected to hold votes over the weekend, but that could change.

2. Caught in the crossfire. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers won't receive a paycheck for the foreseeable future after the government officially shut down October1st. The National Park Service will furlough more than half of its workforce during the government shutdown, but will keep trails, open-air memorials and other areas at least partially open to visitors, it said in its plan for navigating the funding lapse.

3. There's a troubling new report showing the private sector lost 32-thousand jobs in September. That's a stark difference from the 50-thousand jobs gain expected by analysts. The report from ADP suggests employers might be pulling back on hiring because of tariff and inflation concerns. This ADP report carries extra weight this week because it's likely the only jobs data we'll get. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is closed because of the government shutdown, so it can't publish its official jobs report.

1. October 1st, 2025 and the U.S. government is officially shut down. This is the first government shutdown in nearly seven years. If you go to the homepage for the White House right now, you'll see a ticking clock, noting how long the shutdown has been going on. That clock also has a note by it, blaming Democrats for the shutdown. The shutdown started at midnight, because lawmakers and President Trump failed to reach a deal. Both sides are in a bitter fight over spending priorities. According to one estimate, up to 750-thousand workers could be furloughed each day, costing them 400 (m) million dollars in pay per day.

2. The government shutdown is having a negative impact on the markets, however, gold is trading at an all-time high with the weakening dollar. Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver on which sectors will be hit the hardest. While there may be some perceived value in the markets today, Silver warns that timing your purchases in the market around a shutdown is not a great strategy due to its unpredictability.

As many as 750-thousand government workers could be furloughed, according to the Congressional Budget Office. And they won't be paid until Congress appropriates funding and the shutdown ends. Johnny Jones is president of the union that represents thousands of TSA workers across the country. How long will this shutdown last? That's the big question today, and one we don't have the answer to. The most recent shutdown before this was back in 2018. That one was also the longest. It lasted 40 days.

2. It's harvest time for Wisconsin soybean farmers, but Wisconsin's biggest trade partner is on the sidelines. China's retaliatory tariffs and subsequent boycott of U.S. soybeans in 2025 is leading Wisconsin soybean farmers grappling with market uncertainty, low prices, and financial losses. With their biggest customer out of the market, farmers are slashing prices. The long-term concern is that China is beginning to build positive relationships with suppliers from other countries.

3. It’s the first day on the job for the new CEO of Harley-Davidson. Today, Artie Starrs officially becomes President & CEO of the Milwaukee-based motorcycle company. Starrs was most recently the CEO of Topgolf International. Before that, he was Global CEO of Pizza Hut. Harley-Davidson has a great brand, but it's lost riders over the years, and bike sales have slowed, so Starrs has his work cut out for him.
