1. October 1st, 2025 and the U.S. government is officially shut down. This is the first government shutdown in nearly seven years. If you go to the homepage for the White House right now, you'll see a ticking clock, noting how long the shutdown has been going on. That clock also has a note by it, blaming Democrats for the shutdown. The shutdown started at midnight, because lawmakers and President Trump failed to reach a deal. Both sides are in a bitter fight over spending priorities. According to one estimate, up to 750-thousand workers could be furloughed each day, costing them 400 (m) million dollars in pay per day.
2. The government shutdown is having a negative impact on the markets, however, gold is trading at an all-time high with the weakening dollar. Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver on which sectors will be hit the hardest. While there may be some perceived value in the markets today, Silver warns that timing your purchases in the market around a shutdown is not a great strategy due to its unpredictability.
3. Abortion providers across the state line, down in Illinois, are ready to serve what could be a surge in additional patients, due to what's happening here in Wisconsin. Starting today, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is temporarily stopping abortion services. It's an effort to remain eligible for Medicaid reimbursements, under a GOP budget law. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is challenging the de-funding provision in court. Despite the pause at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, abortion is still legal in our state. Other providers here in Wisconsin are ready to handle additional demand, just like the Illinois providers.
