Why does bad nutrition advice sound so convincing, and how do you know who to trust?
Registered dietitian Kylee Van Horn and journalist and elite ultrarunner Zoë Rom, hosts of Your Diet Sucks podcast, join me to expose how nutrition and fitness claims get distorted from actual research into confident prescriptions.
We break down why mechanisms and individual studies aren’t enough, how social media rewards certainty over nuance, and why women’s fitness and hormone health have become especially vulnerable to questionable claims around menopause, cycle syncing, detoxes, testing, and supplement stacks.
We also cover protein and muscle building, why “more” isn’t automatically better, how chronic underfueling can distort your perception of what your body needs, and why getting the basics of nutrition, fueling, and lifting weights right matters more than chasing optimization.
Join Eat More Lift Heavy to build muscle, lose 10-20 lbs of fat, and learn what works for your body, 1 week at a time. Eat more and lift heavy with confidence.

It turns out that carb cycling does NOT improve fat loss or your metabolism. But does it have other benefits?
You've heard you should load carbs on lifting days and cut them on rest days, especially after 40. Where did this idea come from?
I'm breaking down the one study that comes closest to testing carb cycling and what happened when a second group of researchers reanalyzed the data. You'll also hear why the insulin and fat storage argument doesn't hold up, what one study found about insulin sensitivity after menopause, and the number of hard sets that determines whether carbs before training do anything for you.
If you want to stop earning your carbs and put them where your week needs them, hit play.

If 5 to 30 reps can all build muscle, why do some rep ranges clearly work better than others?
After 40, could the “science-based” advice you’re following be the exact reason your progress has stalled?
I brought strength coach Andy Baker back to challenge one of the most oversimplified ideas in evidence-based fitness: that rep ranges are basically interchangeable.
We break down the five rep ranges you need to understand, from heavy 1 to 4 rep strength work through 20 to 30 rep sets, and exactly where each belongs in your training.
You’ll learn why 4 to 8 reps may be the “meat and potatoes” for getting brutally strong and building muscle, when higher reps make more sense for isolation work and cranky joints, and why the effective reps model gets misunderstood.
Plus, Andy shares his simple 80 percent rule for programming your lifting weights after 40.

A diet break won't give you more fat loss. Two weeks at maintenance won't "reset" or "restore" your metabolism either.
But I still use diet breaks with almost every client over 40, but for totally different (but beneficial) reasons.
We lay out a simple framework for using maintenance breaks to reduce diet fatigue, improve adherence, and avoid panicking when the scale jumps, including:

You don't need a calorie surplus to build muscle after 40.
The common surplus numbers are shakier than most people realize. I break down the real energy cost of muscle, what the research says about maintenance versus surplus, and how to tell whether body recomposition is the right approach for you.
I'm breaking down the real energy cost of building a pound of muscle and the 3 conditions that decide whether body recomposition works for you. You'll also hear where the anti-surplus crowd oversells the evidence, why one widely cited recomp study never reported the numbers people claim, and what happened in a study where postmenopausal women lifted for 24 weeks.
If you want to add muscle at the weight you're at right now, hit play!

Perimenopause doesn't cause weight gain.
But if you ARE gaining weight over 40 (or struggling to lose weight), then what's actually going on?

Are you still following outdated advice for strength training over 40 when it comes to building muscle and losing fat?
After 500 episodes of Wits & Weights, I’m revisiting 5 pieces of strength training and nutrition advice I used to give and explaining what changed my mind.
Learn why starting at maintenance calories can still make sense, just not for “metabolic repair,” why total daily protein matters far more than perfect meal timing, and why cardio probably isn’t stealing your muscle gains.
I also break down why training effort matters more than chasing arbitrary volume, what menopause really does to body composition and metabolism, and the pattern connecting all five shifts.
Join Eat More Lift Heavy my 26-week coached program for 40+ to build the nutrition and training skills to preserve muscle, lose fat, and manage your physique for life. Use code 500CLUB for $50 off either six-month option. Offer expires Sunday, September 6.

Strength training and fat loss for men and women over 40 is the foundation of this show. In every episode I put a popular piece of fitness advice under the microscope, find the hidden reason it…
If you've been lifting weights, tracking macros, and doing "all the right things" but your body composition hasn't changed, you're probably overcomplicating it. Wits & Weights shows you how to build muscle, lose fat, and achieve real body recomposition by focusing only on what the evidence actually supports. The show centers on women over 40, but plenty of midlife men listen for the same approach.
Evidence-based coach Philip Pape brings an engineer's approach to strength training, nutrition, and metabolism. Instead of another generic program or meal plan, you get specific, science-based strategies for body recomposition, whether you're focused on building muscle, losing fat, or both. The focus is on strength training over 40, body recomposition for women over 40, perimenopause and menopause fitness, metabolism recovery, hormone health, and longevity.
You've seen the conflicting advice, even on other nutrition podcasts. One expert says cut carbs, the next says eat more. One says train six days a week, another says three is plenty. Building the body you want doesn't have to be this confusing or time-consuming.
By using your wits (systems plus identity-based behavior change) and lifting weights, you can build muscle, improve your physique, and maintain your results for life without rebound weight gain. You'll also learn about metabolism recovery, and why years of dieting can lead to metabolic adaptation that makes fat loss harder than it needs to be.
You'll learn smart, efficient strategies for movement, metabolism, muscle, and mindset: why fat loss matters more than weight loss, why all the macros (protein, fats, and yes even carbs) are critical to body composition, how just 3 hours a week of proper hypertrophy training can outperform twice that time, why building muscle is the single most powerful thing you can do for metabolic health and longevity, why perimenopause and menopause don't have to derail your progress, and how shifting the way you think about fitness drives more growth than any program alone.
Looking for fat loss podcasts, nutrition podcasts, or strength training podcasts for women and men over 40? Wits & Weights brings the science-based answers without the conflicting noise. If you're ready to learn what actually works, hit "follow."
