While working in Wyoming earlier this year, I was able to take a bit of time on some days off and visit friend and fellow Houndsman XP/Xtreme Performance Outdoor Network collaborator Chad Reynolds. Chad was able to take some time and record with me after one of his usual busy days at the ranch, and we talked dog/animal training, the rigours of growing a successful business, and what his falconry has looked like in the different parts of the country he's been in. There's a lot of great discussions in this lengthy episode, and it was great getting a chance to sit down in person to record this, see some of his dogs run, and get an idea of what a day in his life looks like!

Readers of hound hunting books like Life of the Greatest Guide, Slash Ranch Hounds or Meet Mr. Grizzly, by McCurdy, Evans or Stevens respectively have, no doubt, yearned to experience the thrill of hunting mountain lions and bears on horseback in the old West. Our guest in this episode, Chris Todd of Kingman, Arizona doesn’t have to live the lifestyle of the western lion hunter vicariously through the printed page. He literally lives it every day.

Todd, who once hunted lions for ninety days out of ninety-two operates a guide service in which hunters experience a seven-day horse-mounted, hound-enhanced, classic mountain lion hunt just like those taken by Dale Lee, Dub Evans or Montague Stevens. In this episode, Chris and Steve interview Todd on several aspects of lion hunting in Arizona. The discussions range from profiling the successful lion hound to breeding, training, and conditioning the hound for rigorous terrain. The hosts drill down into the origins of the guest’s successful pack and uncover some popular names in hound breeding.

Todd knows lions and lion hounds and the hosts pick his brain on many aspects of the sport of hunting the most elusive of quarry in this interesting episode. Chris Todd is the authentic article and his warm personality and storehouse of knowledge about dry ground lion hunting will entertain and inspire listeners to head out west to hunt lions with hounds in the company of a master lion hunter. This episode will rank high on the reader's enjoyability scale.

The invention of competition raccoon hunting or nite hunts, as they are commonly referred to, is the most impactful facet of the Houndsman lifestyle. Any and every hound that is being hunted today has been impacted in some way by the competition coonhunting game. Dale and Clel Lee hunted hounds from Elbert Vaughn and Berton Oney. Who hasn’t heard of Dave Dean and his Hammer line of Blueticks? Nance bred hounds, Lipper, Albert bred Black and Tans from Gene Hicks and Warren Haslour and his Smokey River hounds are or were all coonhunters. Even the all American bred Plott hound has been influenced by competition coonhunting.

In this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast Chris is joined by Josh Micahelis of Big Show Hunting Productions and a well known competition coonhunter. Josh recently published a top ten list of things every coonhunter should know. That list took social media by storm. Chris and Josh discuss each point in depth. After this discussion the excuses are over. This is straight talk about competing with our hounds.

This is a must listen for every coonhunter that has entered a competition coonhound event, those that aspires to and the big game Houndsman that needs to know what is affecting and influencing the hounds we all enjoy.

The last episode recorded at the THA meet was with Spence Wise, a longtime falconer from Florida. It was fun talking to him about a lot of the changes he's had to adjust to during his many years of falconry, including having to adapt to habitat loss (and finding out that one of his favorite hunting areas used to be where my parents now live), transitioning to hunting with merlins, and beach trapping for merlins, amongst other topics. Thanks again to the Texas Hawking Assocation for helping to make these episodes happen, we hope you've enjoyed them!

Josh Whitaker is the kind of guy you just immediately like. He is fun to talk with, he is a hard hunter and dedicated Houndsman. He and his twin brother Jason co own Whitaker Brothers Hunting Company out of Trinidad Colorado.

Josh and Chris talk lion hunting, how he and Jason got their start and styles of hounds they prefer. They hunt diverse terrain from high mountain to high desert, from dirt to snow. Josh shares his philosphies and experience with HXP faithfuls without hesitation.

Chris and Josh wrap up the conversation with discussing Josh’s experience in Denver last week. Josh and hundreds of other houndsmen were joined by ranchers, trappers and hunters to make a solid stand opposing SB22-031. This bill would have made it illegal to hunt mountain lion, bobcat and kill any future hopes f hunting Canadian lynx in the mile high state.

Houndsman XP is excited to share this success story and we applaud Colorado Houndsmen for organizing and standing up for freedom and science based wildlife management.
