Xtreme Performance Outdoor Network

Jason Wisniewski is a wildlife biologist, trapper and current president of Fur Takers of America (FTA). Jason joins Chris on this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast on the new Xtreme Performance Outdoor Network to discuss managing, hunting and trapping of fur-bearers.

Coonhunters and trappers have always shared a common path, and at times there have been some bumps in the road. Jason and Chris talk about the things that houndsmen and trappers share. The discussion leads into the leadership that FTA has provided in the larger outdoor world with education programs, their influence with fish and wildlife managers and the common fight we share with the anti hunting, animal extremists.

In this crazy time in our history finding friends can be difficult for houndsmen and trappers alike. Fur Takers of America is a valued friend to have.

This episode lets us briefly revisit the Western Cape region of South Africa again, where our guest for this episode, Charl Lotriet, is from. Charl was one of the falconers kind enough to host me while I was in South Africa last summer, and he also took me to experience my first safari trip. Charl is relatively new to falconry, and he discusses his experiences getting into the sport. It was interesting hearing his background as a pilot, along with how he got into the sport. I'm appreciative of his hospitality while I was in South Africa, and hope you enjoy hearing about falconry from his perspective!

This episode takes us back down to Eastern Texas to talk about some good ol' fashioned squirrel hawking! I have to acknowledge and give props to this episode's guest, Randy Watson, for helping to make a lot of these Texas-based episodes happen with falconers on his side of the state, including the recent Gary Brewer episode. Randy was generous enough to contact me and have me down to get these recordings made late last year, and it was great getting to hear how he met Gary and initially got into falconry. Talking squirrel hawking with other falconers never gets old, and this episode is no exception!

Nick Muckerman is freelance outdoor writer, houndsman, professional bird dog trainer and school principal.

Chris was browsing articles on Field Ethos when he came across an article about hunting mountain lions with hounds. Of course, he had to read that one. What Chris found was a fascinating, well written article that took a deeper dive into the nuances of hunting mountain lions written by Nick. The article was almost poetic and it was full of articulate details.

Nick joins Chris on this edition of Houndsman XP on the Xtreme Performance Outdoor Network for an energetic conversation about hounds, bird dogs, lion hunting and how we must share our stories to the world.
