August 08, 2025Grace in the Chase: LJ Johnson Legacy: 95 Years Young and Still Enjoying Coonhunting!
Imagine reaching the age of 95 and still embracing life with vigor, driving, and enjoying the companionship of a lifelong friend in the great outdoors. This is the remarkable story of LJ Johnson, my father's best friend, born in August 1930. It is a true pleasure to feature LJ on "Grace in the Chase," where he shares his heartfelt journey of growing up during challenging times in Southwestern Virginia.
In this captivating podcast, LJ takes us on a nostalgic journey, recounting his early years when his dog treed a possum, to the present day, where he still enjoys listening to the hounds from the tailgate at 95 years young. His stories encompass the hard times, the joyful moments, a lifelong marriage, and his passion for coon hunting, which he pursued with unmatched dedication.
LJ's narrative is a testament to resilience and authenticity. From donating land for a church to witnessing the impact of that gift, to working well into his 80s, his life is a tapestry of grit and truth. I hope you find as much joy in listening to this episode as I did in creating it, all on "Grace in the Chase."

August 05, 2025Falconry Chronicles Episode 179: Amy Woods and Donnie Darras
These next few months are gonna be coming to you from AZ, AR, and OK! I recently visited falconers in each state during my travels before, during, and after my birthday, and got a lot of good episodes recorded. This episode was one of the two I recorded while I was in AZ, and features another falconry couple, Amy Woods and Donnie Darras. They provided yet another unique perspective on being a falconry tandem, and we had a great time talking about hawking in AZ, their time volunteering at the Arizona Raptor Center, Shiba Inus as falconry dogs, and other fun stuff. Thanks again to Amy for letting me swing through, and to Jen Keenan for helping make the trip happen in the first place!

July 29, 2025Falconry Chronicles Episode 178: Bill Brooks
In this last episode (for now) featuring falconers from Kansas, I sit down and have a fun, lengthy conversation with Bill Brooks to talk accipiters, particularly Cooper's hawks, starting falconry in California during the early days, and the inspiration behind staying busy making blocks, perches, and other things. Thanks for joining me on my birthday today and having a good time listening to another spirited episode of the Falconry Chronicles Podcast!

July 25, 2025Grace in the Chase: PKC Youth World Reserve Champion “Alec Hummel”
Welcome to Grace in the Chase, where we explore stories of passion, perseverance, and the grace that guides us along the way. Today, we have the privilege of hearing from Alec Hummel, a young man whose journey into the world of coon hunting is both inspiring and heartwarming.
Alec's love for the movie "Where the Red Fern Grows" sparked an interest in coon hunting long before he ever experienced it firsthand. It wasn't until he met Albert “Bucky” Ashcraft that this interest became a reality. At just 14 years old, Alec went on his first coon hunting adventure with Bucky, and it was a moment that changed everything. From that day forward, Alec was captivated by the thrill and challenge of the hunt.
Recently, Alec participated in the PKC World Youth Hunt for the first and last time, as he has now aged out of the youth category. Having just graduated high school at 18, Alec stands at the threshold of a new chapter, with endless possibilities before him. Supported by a loving family, including two siblings and parents who have been married for over two decades, Alec finds strength and encouragement in their unwavering support.
Join us as Alec shares his journey to becoming the PKC World Youth Reserve Champion. His story is a testament to the grace that accompanies us in our pursuits and the joy of doing what we love. Tune in to hear it all on Grace in the Chase!

July 21, 2025I Shook Hands with the HSUS
Have you ever had an in depth conversation with a high level executive from an animal rights organization? Do you really know what is going on in executive board rooms? Do you wonder what the real strategies are?
Meet John Bolin. John is a career law enforcement officer that went to work for one of the most recognizable animal rights organizations in the world. He sat in executive board meetings, he read company email, he saw sensitive and secret documents. He saw the evil from within.
After brief employment he knew he needed to get out and disassociate himself from the animal rights movement.
You will hear an amazing story about graft, corruption, and the dishonesty that is an everyday practice for the animal rights movement. Never before has anyone from this level or with this much involvement shared the true facts about animal rights agendas with the hunting community.
John is dedicated to exposing the corrupt practices of the movement.
