C. diff (also known as Clostridioides difficile or C. difficile) is a bacterium that causes severe diarrhea and severe inflammation of the gut. This bacterium is everywhere in the environment, and produces spores that are extremely hard to kill. It lays asleep in our gut until we are given antibiotics that kill all the good biome (probiotics) in our gut allowing it to come alive and overgrow. It’s estimated to cause almost half a million infections in the United States each year killing 28-30,000 people, mostly seniors and children.
