  • EP 993B - New Research Explores How Coronavirus Attacks Cells
Dr. Charles Brenner, Lead Investigator at ChromaDex Corporation, joins Dr. Roizen to explain the significance of recent findings about coronaviruses. As scientists work to make sense of the current pandemic, new research has explored how coronavirus attacks cells. One study showed that coronavirus infection in cells and animal tissue induces important NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)-dependent enzymes, including poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), which are a critical part of cells’ innate immune response. The study also showed that cellular NAD+ levels declined greater than three-fold as a result of coronavirus infection. The findings suggest that replenishing NAD+ levels, which decline under viral infection, may support increased PARP activity and cell survival during the innate immune response to coronaviruses. Dr. Charles Brenner, Lead Investigator at ChromaDex Corporation, joins Dr. Roizen to explain the significance of these findings. Want better health and nutrition? • EP 992B - New Technology Provides Antiviral Protection for High-Touch Surfaces
Biological warfare technology born at West Texas A&M University has been re-adapted and deployed across campus to protect door handles from viruses and bacteria.Biological warfare technology born at West Texas A&M University, that was originally developed to protect soldiers from anthrax, has been re-adapted and deployed across campus to protect door handles from viruses and bacteria. Doors across West Texas A&M University soon will receive Copper Clean stickers over handles and push plates. The stickers -- essentially a highly engineered copper-alloy foil with an adhesive backing -- are the newest product developed by Engineering Dean Emily Hunt and a group of ambitious graduate engineering students working to commercialize patents they have obtained for West Texas A&M University and The Texas A&M University System. Along with standard infection control practices, these stickers will help alleviate the microbial burden on these high-touch surfaces across campus. Dr. Hunt joins Dr. Roizen to explain the technology and how it works. Want better health and nutrition? • EP 991B - Pancreatic Cancer: New "Time Machine" Science
A pancreatic cancer “time machine” engineered by Purdue University researchers has revealed that the disease is even more unpredictable than previously thought.Pancreatic cancer has one of the worst survival rates among cancers. Patients can expect as low as a nine percent chance to live for at least five years after being diagnosed. Going back in time to observe how cells with key gene mutations interact and become invasive would help researchers better understand how the cancer starts and identify it sooner. A pancreatic cancer “time machine” engineered by Purdue University researchers has revealed that the disease is even more unpredictable than previously thought: Cancer cells promote each other’s invasiveness when they grow together. Bumsoo Han, PhD, joins Dr. Roizen to explain more about this science.  Want better health and nutrition?
