  • EP 953B - Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World
While children living with neurodifferences have certain struggles, their parents also have a rough journey. At least one in five kids are in some way not neurotypical, meaning they live with ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, giftedness, anxiety, sensory processing disorder, and other neurodifferences.  While these children have certain struggles with these differences, their parents also have a rough journey.  Debbie Reber's son is "twice exceptional," as he has ADHD, Asperger’s, and is also highly gifted. She used her own experiences in his developmental process to create her company, TiLT Parenting. A "tilt" is a way for parents to reframe a way of thinking about both their child's journey, as well as their own -- and also help their children along the way. Debbie joins Dr. Roizen to share insights from her book, Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World, and to explain more about the 18 different tilts she includes in the book. • EP 950B - Bioethicist’s Personal Struggle with Opioids
Travis Rieder's experience with opioids after a motorcycle accident exposes a dark secret of American pain management. When Travis Rieder, PhD, was in a motorcycle accident in May 2015, he couldn't have imagined what would follow. It was the most severe trauma he'd ever experienced. Having to endure half a dozen surgeries, in addition to the excruciating pain of the accident itself, he found opioids to be both miraculous and essential to his recovery.  At the time, he didn't realize what the "cost" of those opioids would be. Rieder developed a great dependence on the drugs and suffered for weeks, what he calls "dope sick," upon getting off them.  Rieder’s experience exposes a dark secret of American pain management: a healthcare system so conflicted about opioids, and so inept at managing them, that the crisis currently facing us is both unsurprising and inevitable. Listen as Rieder joins Dr. Roizen to share his personal journey through opioid use, as well as why this is such a significant problem in our society today. No matter how you perceive the future of technology, the fact is, it's coming. Many people view technological advances as a good thing; progress. Others resist change, and meet these advances with skepticism -- and sometimes fear.  If you've ever watched an episode of the futuristic Netflix show, Black Mirror, you might be leaning towards the latter.  No matter how you perceive the future of technology, the fact is, it's coming. We already have automobiles that essentially drive and park themselves, but according to automotive expert Jason Torchinsky, autonomous vehicles will soon be on every street in America.  In his book, Robot, Take the Wheel: The Road to Autonomous Cars and the Lost Art of Driving, Torchinsky discusses the cultural and conceptual impact of driverless cars and why they are really the first mass deployment of robots in human society. Listen in as Torchinsky explores what’s ahead and considers what we can do now to shape the automated future. Bonus Screen Time and Alzheimer’s
