Hey, hey Habit Thrivers!š
Welcome to episode 101, where we're launchingš into our next 100 episodes (and beyond) on the Habit Thrive Podcast by diving back into the topic of movement and exercise.š
So far on our May Mindful Movement Series, we have discussed ā whether or not we ever find ourselves craving habits like exercise and movement, ā exploring how Ayurveda can have us embracing exercise, ā and how to habit stack movement with exercise.
This week, we are thinking about when OUR best timeš of day is for exercise.
While movement can happen at any time (taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parkingš farther away from the door, stepping away from the computerš» for a good stretch), exercise is marked by a planned, structured activity that gets your heart rate up.
ā¤ļø Aerobics
ā¤ļø Bike riding
ā¤ļø Kayaking
ā¤ļø Running
ā¤ļø Dancing
ā¤ļø Strength training
So, when do these fit into your day?š¤
It can be different for many of us, and the answer can be approached from twoāļø different perspectives: Physical or Ayurvedic
From a physical perspective, ask questions like:
āWhat time of day is it most convenient for me?
Maybe you're a working mom and wife whose only āfreeā time is first thing in the morningāļø.
Or a retiree enjoying slower mornings with coffeeā and shifting exercise to an evening salsa class.
āShould I habit stack with something else?
Yoga before or after a strengthšŖ training session.
A run or bikeš² ride while listening to a podcast.
āDoes my exercise balance the rest of my day?
An early-morning walkš¶āāļø or dance session might get your blood pumping for the day ahead.Ā
Or, getting up early enough to exercise might leave you lacking in the sleepš„± department and dragging.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, you want to keep in mindš§ :
Your dosha.
If you don't know yours already,Ā take a quiz like the one on chopra.com to find out.
It really does give insightš into the hows and whys of your habits and routines.
Ā
The Ayurvedic clock.ā°
ā±ļø6 am-10 am is Kapha time: You may feel heavier or slower as you clear the sludge from the day before.
ā±ļø10 am-2 pm is Pitta time: It's the time when your digestive fire is the highest. Its arguably the best time for largest meal of the day, but not ideal for exercise.
ā±ļø2 pm-6 pm is Vata time: This is often the time to begin to wind down from your day. Take a low-intensity walk, engage in social activities, or even take an afternoon nap!
Your dosha will help you determine where exercise will best fit into your Ayurvedic clock. I encourage you to do some research, as it's really quite interesting!
Now, let's get moving!
