14/02/22 Shadow DEFRA Secretary, Lowland rewilding, Rare breeds

Listen Later

A Labour government would make more money available to farmers, according to the shadow DEFRA Secretary Jim McMahon - who thinks there isn’t enough of a budget for England’s Environmental Land Management schemes, and suggests farmers should be in the running for a share of Labour’s £28 billion Decarbonisation Fund.
Charlotte asks Mr McMahon about his approach to future agricultural policy, and how he would handle problems in the pig sector.
Meanwhile Jo Lonsdale's been to visit a site in Northumberland that's on track to become one of the biggest lowland rewilding sites in the country. Northumberland Wildlife Trust has bought 800 hectares near the coast, in what was once the heart of the region’s coal-mining industry.
And all this week we’re talking about rare breeds, and how and why we should be boosting their numbers. Christopher Price from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust explains why native breeds are becoming more attractive and viable options.
