Callers Brent & Robyn are a married couple navigating the effects of past trauma on their relationship. They are committed to each other's individual healing process and creating a safe space for one another to process their emotions.
When trauma and codependency collide, true connection and healing emerge with honest communication and a commitment to each other's growth.
"When you come into the relationship with trauma and you come into the relationship with shame, you're naturally going to try to use each other as medication to solve those things. But if you're both committed to this relationship, then in many ways, you're both committed to each other's individual healing process, and you're committed to being an asset to their individual healing process."
Brent and Robyn entered their marriage with a lack of understanding of how their individual traumas and past relationships would affect their marriage. They soon realized that past traumas, even when openly discussed, still caused trauma and changed their behavior. This caused disharmony in their marriage. To address this, they realized they were both codependent and needed to do their own individual work. After Brent attended a men's retreat, he began to work on himself and recognize that his value comes from God. He now understands that Robyn needs him to not depend on her for his value, but to be a strong partner who can help her with her individual healing process.
In this episode:
1. How do you keep your marriage a priority in the face of trauma and codependency?
2. How can couples navigate each other's triggers without creating further tension and disconnection?
3. How can partners commit to each other's individual healing process and support each other in creating a safe space for vulnerability?
