At the tender young age of 36, Cheryl Ilov was blindsided by a devastating back injury. In a few short months, she was transformed from a healthy, active, vibrant young woman to a chronic pain patient.
Instead of going to her usual ballet and Pilates classes, she filled her time with doctor's appointments, physical therapists, and massage therapists. She was on pain meds, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatories. Two and a half years later, Cheryl was told that living with chronic, debilitating pain was her new normal, and she had to accept it.
Cheryl knew she had to find another way. She fired her medical team (much to their dismay), stopped taking the medications, and began a meticulous process of self-healing through gentle movement, self-exploration, and awareness. Not only did Cheryl make a complete recovery, she discovered a unique path to fitness and vitality, and embarked on a remarkable journey of lifelong learning. She earned her Master's Degree in physical therapy in 1996, and pursued extensive training in Pilates, dance, Feldenkrais, and became a martial arts black belt at the age of 57. She has since taken up pole dancing and at 62 years young, she continues to enjoy the flexibility and range of motion that is required for this fun and rigorous activity.
What we believe is what we become. In today’s conversation with us, Cheryl Ilov shares her belief that we can all be fit, healthy, vibrant, and active in every stage of life, and she backs it up with experience – her own and the many clients she’s worked with. Cheryl emphasizes that feeling fabulous at fifty and beyond is more than a clothing size or number on a scale.
Listen is as she offers practical tips for taking back your health and transforming your body. We need a different way of looking at our bodies and to make the shift from being a patient of the medical system to becoming an active partner responsible for our health. Cheryl shows us how.
