Be You Podcast

280 - Ten Tips for How to Be a Well-Resourced Person

Listen Later

Join Jill for the five-year anniversary of Be YOU - a special live podcast event celebrating 300 episodes of the podcast - on Saturday, October 25th from 1–5 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tickets are selling fast at jillherman.com/beyou, and discounted rooms are available at a boutique hotel right next door!

Join Jill this week as she shares some fresh insights from her recent coaching group for moms - Plot Twist: Only Moms Edition - and offers ten tips for how to be a well-resourced person! She invites listeners to embrace a simple daily rhythm, like starting the day with a glass of water or a favorite song that instantly shifts your mood, and she challenges the overwhelming amount of nervous system “tools” out there and instead encourages accessible, low-key practices like standing barefoot outside or using box breathing while waiting in line.

Jill also reflects on the range of emotions that many moms face, introducing the concept of the “window of tolerance,” or that delicate space where we can feel all our emotions without spiraling, shutting down, or melting down. She explores how being “well-resourced” means building your own toolkit that helps you stay inside that safe emotional space, even when life gets messy. She stresses that this toolkit is not just about physical preparedness (like having batteries and paper products at home) but also about emotional resources, such as having one supportive person who truly holds space for you without judgment.

You can also expect to hear Jill get real about phone boundaries. Yes, that's definitely a tough one, but Jill reflects on her own struggles and practical strategies to build a much healthier relationship with digital distractions, encouraging listeners to put your phone on airplane mode for chunks of the day or setting timers to avoid “scroll holes.” If you are someone who struggles with any of what Jill talks about here and feel like you could use some insights into how to be better resourced, then this is an episode of Be YOU that you will not want to miss!

Show Notes:

[01:43] - Jill reveals that there is no more group coaching until November, but there will be quick-question support launching via Telegram in July. [04:12] - Jill reminds listeners that a live podcast event celebrating 300 episodes is set for October 25 in Fort Wayne, Indiana! [05:21] - Learn about the “window of tolerance” and the importance of being well-resourced. [08:11] - Jill's first suggestion for staying well-resourced is to have a simple, daily rhythm such as morning water or music. [09:12] - Secondly, grounding exercises like barefoot standing or breathwork to soothe the nervous system are important. [10:08] - #3 is to have one person who listens and supports you without trying to fix you. [10:57] - For her fourth tip, Jill recommends having a connection to something larger like the universe, the cosmos, or a god. [11:50] - The fifth tip is to try limiting phone use to avoid unconscious, time-draining scrolling. [13:07] - #6: When you're overwhelmed or detached, return to your personal anchor via breath, movement, and/or nature. [14:58] - #7 is to allow yourself to feel your emotions and to not apologize for them. [16:00] - For her eighth tip, Jill stresses nourishment, which includes not just food but also pleasure, sunlight, music, etc. [16:53] - The ninth tip is to get comfortable with saying “no” to protect your energy and self-respect. [18:04] - Jill's tenth and final tip is to use reminders of who you are such as mantras, playlists, or videos. [19:32] - Jill offers a recap of the ten tips. [22:04] - Staying within your window of tolerance depends on how resourced, rested, and nourished you are!
