Recently I went to the doctor for a checkup. I had been seeing this doctor for 4 years and I had just seen her 6 months ago, and my blood work looked great. This time, I felt off, my blood work was off, and I hadn’t been taking my thyroid medication regularly.

For the first time ever, my doctor brought up intentional weight loss as a solution to my current issues. She even suggested surgery, which I have already had and had a horrible experience with. To say I was shocked is an understatement.

I could have walked out of that appointment and not gone back. I could have let her blame my autoimmune diagnoses on my body size. Instead, I asked myself how I would advocate for one of my Body Grievers, and instead explained how intentional weight loss was never going to be an option for me because of my disordered past. Luckily, she listened.
