Welcome back to mini-episode #3 for sexual assault awareness month.

Today we're talking about the different types of sexual violence; crimes such as sexual assault, rape & sexual abuse.

Sexual Assault
-Sexual assault is sexual contact or behavior that happens without the consent of the victim.
         -Attempted rape, fondling or unwanted sexual touching, forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, penetration of the victim's body (rape).
-It is never the victim's fault!
-8 out of 10 sexual assaults are committed by somebody that the victim knows.

Child Sexual Abuse
-This is when a perpetrator intentionally harms a minor physically, physiologically, sexually, or by acts of neglect
-A child can not consent to any form of sexual acts PERIOD.

*Sexual assault can happen to anyone.*
*A victim does not have control over the physiological effects that happen within our body when consent is not given.*

How to support a survivor
-Listen
-Validate their feelings
-Express concern, show you care
-Avoid asking for details
-Help provide appropriate resources (rainn.org)

*A perpetrator can even be an intimate partner! Marriage does not give life-long consent.
Consent is constantly needed!*

Lastly, other forms of sexual violence include sexual harassment, stalking, elder abuse, prisoner rape, military sexual trauma, etc. Sexual violence takes on many forms.
 The point of this episode is to help you learn how to recognize sexual violence.
