For a long time, the conversation around alcohol felt incredibly black and white. But what about everyone who sits somewhere in between? Years ago, I started using the term “middle lane” to describe my own relationship with alcohol, and it went on to resonate with far more people than I could ever have imagined. In this episode, I explore what it really means to be a middle lane drinker, why our relationship with alcohol isn't always easy to define, and why there might be another way to think about where you are right now. If you've ever questioned your drinking but felt that the usual labels simply don't describe you, this one's for you. What You'll Learn:What it means to be a middle lane drinkerWhy alcohol isn't always a black-and-white conversationA different way to look at your relationship with alcoholWhy questioning your drinking can be a positive stepWhat's possible when you start seeing alcohol differentlyTimestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 Are you a middle lane drinker? 03:00 – 06:00 Rethinking the traditional alcohol conversation 06:00 – 09:00 Is there another way? 09:00 – 12:00 Looking at your relationship with alcohol differently 12:00 – End The growing alcohol-free adventure And if this episode has sparked something in you and you’re thinking about training as a coach, I’d love to help you take that next step. What happens when a 90-day alcohol-free challenge turns into an entire year? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I’m celebrating a pretty special milestone. My little brother Rob and his wonderful wife Lou have officially reached one year alcohol-free. But this episode isn’t only about celebrating them. I want to explore what starts to happen when you stay on this adventure for longer. When you experience the weddings, stressful moments, celebrations and everything else life throws at you without automatically reaching for a drink. Oh, and after my recent trip to Ireland, I also have an extremely important award to announce: the world’s greatest sober dancer. It definitely isn’t me. What You'll Learn:What can happen when 90 days becomes one yearWhy longer alcohol-free breaks can be so powerfulWhat big social occasions can teach you about yourselfWhy the alcohol-free adventure can keep getting betterWhat might be waiting for you further down the roadTimestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 One year alcohol-free 03:00 – 05:00 When 90 days becomes something bigger 05:00 – 09:00 The world’s greatest sober dancer 09:00 – 12:00 The power of going longer 12:00 – 15:00 Why it keeps getting better 15:00 – End The next alcohol-free adventure And if your own journey has sparked a desire to help others and explore becoming a coach, come and experience coaching for yourself through our Foundation Certificate in Coaching. Weddings. Big birthdays. Work parties. Those BIG social events can be some of the most intimidating moments when you’re going alcohol-free. In fact, sometimes just seeing one in the diary can be enough to make you think, “Maybe I’ll start after that.” But do these occasions really need alcohol to be fun? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I tackle some of the fears that come with navigating big social occasions without drinking, including one of my own that sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud: sober dancing. If you’ve got a wedding, birthday, holiday or big night out coming up and you’re wondering how on earth you’ll do it alcohol-free, this one’s for you. What You'll Learn:Why big social events can feel so challenging alcohol-freeHow our minds create reasons to keep putting change offWhy sober dancing isn’t quite as scary as it soundsA different way to approach your next big occasionHow facing these moments can change your confidenceTimestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 The big social event dilemma 03:00 – 07:00 The fears we don’t always say out loud 07:00 – 11:00 Facing the big occasions 11:00 – 15:00 A different way to experience them 15:00 – 19:00 And then comes the dancing... 19:00 – End What happens on the other side And if you’ve ever thought about taking your own experiences and using them to help other people through coaching, you can train with me at Coach Business School. Have you ever looked back at your drinking days through rose-tinted beer goggles and wondered whether you’re missing out? Even after more than a decade alcohol-free, I still occasionally experience those little moments that make me wonder. But what if the story our mind is telling us isn’t quite the full story? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I explore FOMO, nostalgia and those moments when alcohol can suddenly seem appealing again. I also share an experience that gave me a completely different perspective on what we might really be missing out on. And trust me, there’s a story behind the title of this episode. What You'll Learn:Why the past can sometimes look better than it really wasHow to handle those unexpected moments of temptationA different perspective on FOMOWhat saying “yes” to alcohol might really meanWhy alcohol-free life can open doors you never expectedTimestamps: 00:00 – 04:00 The rose-tinted beer goggles 04:00 – 08:00 When nostalgia starts calling 08:00 – 12:00 Are you really missing out? 12:00 – 16:00 An unexpected turn 16:00 – 20:00 A moment I’ll never forget 20:00 – End A completely different way to see FOMO If you’re thinking about turning your own experience into something that could help others, you can also train as a coach with me at Coach Business School. Moderation sounds like the sensible middle ground. One or two drinks, stay in control, and carry on. But I think there's a problem with that story. For me, moderation means wanting more of something but using willpower to force yourself to have less. And when willpower inevitably runs low, one drink can become two, two can become five, and suddenly we're wondering what went wrong. In this episode, I unpack why I believe moderation creates more mental noise than freedom, how confirmation bias convinces us we're better at moderating than we really are, and why those people who can nurse one drink all night might not be moderators at all. Most importantly, I explore what happens when you stop negotiating with alcohol altogether and discover the peace, confidence, and freedom on the other side. What You'll Learn:Why moderation relies so heavily on willpowerHow confirmation bias distorts the story we tell ourselves about drinkingWhy one or two drinks can so easily become fiveThe difference between a moderator and what I call a "non-drinker in disguise"Why going alcohol-free removes the constant negotiation and mental noiseTimestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 Why I believe moderation is doomed to fail 03:00 – 06:00 Confirmation bias and the moderation story 06:00 – 09:00 Why two drinks can so easily become five 09:00 – 11:00 The "non-drinker in disguise" 11:00 – End Escaping the noise of moderation and choosing alcohol-free If this episode has inspired you to explore coaching, I'd love to invite you to join my Diploma in Coaching & Positive Psychology (DCPP) cohort and train to become a life and executive coach, and specialise in Alcohol-Free Performance coaching.
