We are under the weather here at All Creatures, so this week we went to the vault and pulled out an episode we did in August 2019 for our Patreon supporters. We were slated to do Warthogs, but instead, we will release Meerkat this week and follow it up with Warthog next week. Meerkats are beloved by many. These small mammals inhabit the southern reaches of Africa and survive in some harsh terrain. They have also evolved some incredible and endearing behaviors. Another amazing species to learn about.

This week leads us to another radical animal, the Electric Eel. By far one of the most incredible biological adaptations are this animal's ability to naturally produce electricity. We delve into the eels ability to produce a shock as high as 860 volts. By far one of the strongest shocks produced by any known animal. Listen and learn to be amazed by our natural world.

Ms. Mallory’s mission is to spark curiosity about wildlife, conservation, and local natural history while empowering others to do the same through public outreach, community conservation projects, and citizen scientist initiatives. As a wildlife educator, Mallory believes facts are better told through stories, curiosity should never be smothered, and the power of one should empower many. For over a decade, Mallory has invested her focus-and talents- in challenging the way people view our wildlife (see Fear2Fascination) and encouraging them to find their own niche in making the world a better place ( see Curious Conservationist). From documenting scientists’ stories in remote locations to to working alongside our nation’s youth, connecting with others is a key component to changing lives- and our planet.

We welcome a really unique species, the Star Nosed Mole. While it may look strange, its nose and other adaptations makes this a fascinating creatures to learn about. We had a lot of fun discussing this special little species and all that it can teach us.
Disclaimer: we had some issues with our recording website, so the audio may sound a little different this week. Our apologizes.

This week we go massive and talk about the largest deer species in the world, the Moose! Or in Europe known as the Eurasian Elk. Just a phenomenal species to discuss. We really nerd out this week talking about this animals physiology, it's behavior and all the other wonderful things that make the Moose one of our favorites. Also a special shout out to Julia from Minnesota who is a wonderful Patreon supporter and asked for this species. We also give a special shout out to our Canadian listeners.

This week we are very fortunate to have an interview with Ian Recchio, Curator of Amphibians and Reptiles from the Los Angeles Zoo. We discuss the plight of many of the planet's amphibians, specifically the Southern Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog. This species is one of the most endangered amphibians in California and Ian is helping to lead the efforts to restore this animal to its native habitat. The story about Ian and his efforts can be read HERE. This is an incredible conservation story that is still ongoing today. What we are learning from these efforts, among others that we discuss with Ian, are helping multiple species around the world.

This week we travel to North America and learn about one of the largest amphibians in the world, the Hellbender. Amphibians are incredible animals that have adapted and survived for hundreds of millions of years. Sadly, amphibians are one of the most endangered class of animals on the planet. It is estimated up to 41% of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction. Being one of the largest, Hellbenders and the other giant salamanders of the world are also threatened with extinction. These are incredible and ancient animals that you need to know about.

In light of the horrific fires in Australia, we wanted to release one of our special episodes. This was recorded in December for our Patreon only listeners. However, with the tragedy unfolding in Australia we felt compelled to share this episode with you. Red Kangaroos are an iconic species of Australia and just fascinating. We hope you enjoy this episode to learn about one of the planet's most unique mammals.

This week we deliver a special episode on the ongoing and unprecedented crisis in Australia. We pay particular attention to the impacts these fires have had and will have on the native wildlife there. Undoubtedly, this was a difficult and emotional episode for us to do. Current estimates are that at least 1 billion, if not more, animals have perished in these fires. We cover the scientific data pouring out of Australia. Additionally, we cover how the world is coming together for Australia and we highlight what you can do to help.
