All Things Strange

Here we go! The final chapter of Ruppelt's excellent report on UFOs. This chapter is a stark contrast to the rest of the book: it is totally skeptical. There are rumors that he was made to put this chapter in by the military to debunk UFOs. There are also rumors that the last three chapters were ghost written, and not actually written by Ruppelt. Whatever the case, here it is, the final chapter of the book.

Why don't they just land on the White House Lawn and say "take me to your leader?" Well it turns out UFOs came pretty close in 1952. They didn't land, but they did fly over the nation's capitol. This happened over two weekends. But this wasn't just an isolated incident: there was a genuine flap that year, and UFOs were seen in record numbers all over the nation.

The military was in a panic. They couldn't identify or intercept these UFOs. Had they been hostile, we would have been completely at their mercy. What makes these sightings extraordinary is that they were seen on multiple radars; they were simultaneously seen by visual observers on the ground and the air; and they were seen by multiple independent witnesses.

Come along as we discuss the 1952 Washington D.C. UFO incident, aka the Washington Flap, the Washington National Airport Sightings, or more dramatically as The Invasion of Washington.

The penultimate chapter! This time Eddy focuses on obvious hoaxes where witnesses claim to have met beings from another world. Some of these stories were difficult to read with a straight face. However in the larger context of the book, and the rumors that the military forced Ruppelt to add skeptical chapters, I have to wonder if chapter 19 is an attempt to bring the reader to a skeptical position.

We had some technical difficulties, so the planned episode on the Washington DC event of 1952 is delayed a week. This sort chapter was a last minute replacement.

Next time we will discuss... BIGFOOT!

This time around we discuss the terrifying doomsday cult from Japan. These guys aren't your typical cult. Rather than hoping that the world would end, they actually planned to make it happen.

Happy Holidays! Just in time for turkey day, we have the first of three chapters added for the 1960 edition of Ruppelt's book. The first edition, published in 1956, had just 17 chapters.

Some speculate that the last 3 chapters were added at the request of the Air Force, or perhaps a shadowy government agency. However we may never find out, as Ruppelt died of a heart attack at the young age of 37 just after the publication of the second edition of his book in 1960.

One thing is certain, however, that these last three chapters are firmly on the side of the anti-saucer crowd. Unlike the rest of the book, they seem to follow a debunking agenda. At any rate they are in the book and thus will be read.

Enjoy!

Some really good cases presented in this chapter, "What are the ufos?". While he doesn't explicitly answer the question, Ruppelt does hint at the possibility of interplanetary spacecraft. But he does so while trying to remain objective.

This chapter discusses a couple of different studies on UFOs and the conclusion a group of scientists reached on the topic. A few bombshells in this one, well worth the listen.

The radiation problem! This chapter is mostly about tracking radiation along with UFO sightings. Its not as simple as it sounds, and investigations had interesting results.

Come along this week as agents ETA and Anderson talk about whatever random stuff comes up. We had planned a different topic, but Agent Anderson got evacuated from the northern California Glass Fire.  Enjoy!

Kenneth Arnold's sighting in 1947 kicked off the modern UFO era. A misquotation in the press coined the term "flying saucer" that is still used today, although not as often as UAP or UFO. We discuss some of the finer points of the sighting, as well as some of the many other similar sightings of the time.

Saturday Night UFORIA This excellent blog goes into great detail about many things. This particular article has the pictures discussed in the episode.

PDF LINK: The Roswell Deception by James Carrion. This is where I got the alternate theory from. I didn't have time to read all of it yet, but its pretty interesting.
